Finding even a switched off phone is not a problem – where and how to look correctly

How to find a dead phone at home?

Finding a discharged smartphone is fraught with certain difficulties, since this device is compact in size and often gets stuck in hard-to-reach places. But despite the above, you can find a phone using a few simple tips.

If you search for a smartphone using hardware methods (using built-in applications, etc.), you must remember that the choice of method in this case is determined by the type of operating system.

However, before applying these options, you should resort to logic. It is often possible to find a lost smartphone only by inspecting the premises.

Remember what you recently did with your smartphone

Using this advice, you can significantly reduce your search area. People often get lost in their own thoughts when working on a smartphone. As a result, the phone is left in an uncharacteristic place, after which the mobile device is lost from sight.

To find the device, you need to remember:

  • what actions were performed on the smartphone;
  • events that preceded these actions and occurred later;
  • the place where these actions took place.

Thanks to this, you can restore a picture of the environment in which the smartphone was last used. Then you can follow the route in the opposite direction, paying attention to all uncharacteristic places. In particular, you should look into the refrigerator or washing machine if the phone was last used in the kitchen or bathroom, respectively.

Search in the trash can

This tip builds on the previous one. People, lost in their own thoughts, often do not realize their own actions. So, if a person went to throw a candy wrapper in the trash, then instead of a piece of paper he might accidentally send a mobile gadget for recycling.

You should also look here if your phone was used while cleaning. The device could also accidentally end up among a mountain of garbage that was thrown into a bucket.

Ask household members

People around you could notice where the smartphone was placed after its last use. Also, household members often move the device to a new place, since it interfered with certain actions.

If there are small children in the house, then asking people around will speed up the phone search. The child is able to put the device in a place where the gadget has never been placed before. And one of the household members could remember where the baby was last located. This will narrow down your search.

Carry out general cleaning

This option will take a lot of time, but it will allow you to find a turned off phone and clean the house at the same time. But it is recommended to resort to general cleaning if other methods have not helped. This is explained by the fact that the mobile gadget may be located outside the home. Therefore, you should first recreate the picture in which the device was last used.

Use a flashlight

A flashlight will help you find lost items in hard-to-reach places. If you highlight your way, the search will be much easier. Use a flashlight to find things that have fallen under the sofa, sink, bathtub, and so on. This advice is relevant for people with small children who can hide the gadget in such places.

Wait for the alarm to ring

This option is suitable for those who have an alarm clock on their phone that rings daily. Mobile technology is designed in such a way that the smartphone rings even when it is turned off due to a low battery. This method is considered more effective than the above, since you can find the phone by walking in the direction of the sound.

Ask your family for help when searching

Several people will find a lost device faster than one. To speed up the search, it is recommended to identify areas where the gadget may be found, and assign each person a separate area.

My phone is lost: what should I do?

To search for it, it is worth using several time-tested methods. The choice of method for finding a phone if you have lost it and it is turned off at home depends on the circumstances of the loss.

Can't find my phone at home

This option is one of the most harmless and safe, from the point of view of the safety of the gadget. Sooner or later, the phone will be found. The difficulty lies in answering the question of how to find a phone at home that is turned off or has a dead battery.

In order to speed up the search for the “lost”, you should use the following tips:

The phone was lost in a public place or on the street

The chance of finding a gadget, in this case, is much less, however, you should not lose hope and try to find it.

IMPORTANT! You should start looking for a smartphone immediately after discovering it is missing: the less time has passed, the greater the chances of finding it and returning it.

To do this, you need to use the following methods:

Determine the location of possible loss of the gadget. You will need to remember the time and circumstances of its last use. Perhaps it could have been put past the bag and left on the table in the cafe. Such memories will help to significantly narrow the search area;

Post missing notices. It is worth placing them along the entire route, since the exact place where the phone was lost is unknown. The advertisement should indicate that the person returning the lost item will receive a reward. From the point of view of someone who has found a gadget, it is much more profitable to give it to the owner and receive money than to sell it at your own risk without documents.

Help! To search for a phone more efficiently, you need to install one of the applications designed for such cases.

A popular program is Signal Flare. When the battery charge becomes critically low, the application records and transfers the “lost” coordinates to the owner on another gadget. To operate, Signal Flare uses GPS and a Wi-Fi network. This application is an effective method of finding your phone at home if it is turned off android.

What if the phone was stolen after all?

If such suspicions arise, you should act immediately.

The sooner the owner of the missing gadget contacts the police and writes a statement, the greater the chance of catching the thief in hot pursuit. The statement must indicate not only the location of the theft, but also the time at which the loss was discovered.

You will also need to indicate the IMEI of the device. Every mobile phone has this individual number. You can watch it in several places:

IMEI consists of fifteen digits, which includes the serial number of the model, the country of origin code and the individual number for each device. IMEI is not easy to change; it remains the same, even when replacing the SIM card.

Help! For convenience, you can download a special application in advance, which, using the IMEI of a stolen smartphone, will inform the owner that the SIM card has been changed and will send new number via CMC.

According to the court ruling, the police will be able to use IMEI to establish information about the location of the device after it is lost. All this information is stored in the memory of the mobile operator’s billing server.

The ideal way to solve the problem was described above. However, in practice you will have to face many problems:

How to find a switched off phone by IMEI?

IMEI is a set of numbers unique to each device. You can find this code on the box in which the smartphone was packaged, or on the gadget itself. To find a lost phone by IMEI, you need to:

  1. Rewrite this set of numbers and go to the police station with your passport.
  2. Write a report about missing equipment. The police officers will respond by making a request to the mobile operator with whom the communication contract has been concluded.

This method can be used if two conditions are met simultaneously:

  • the smartphone was actually stolen;
  • a GPS receiver was connected to the mobile device.

If, as a result of the search, it turns out that the phone was at home (or in another place accessible to the user), the applicant will receive a large fine. It should also be taken into account that the police are handling many theft cases at the same time. Therefore, the loss of mobile equipment is considered a lower priority than other cases. In such cases, the police begin to search for stolen smartphones only if the employees have free time.

Try to find the device via the Internet using the Android Remote Control service.

Enter the Google account that is added to your device.

If the device is not turned off and connected to the Internet, its location will be displayed. You can block it, delete all data, or contact the police.

If the device is turned off or not connected to the Internet, the location will not be displayed.

If the device cannot be found, then

Finding a phone via computer

You can find a lost phone through a computer if the user has previously activated the corresponding service from the mobile operator. The latter involves installing a special application that allows you to track the location of gadgets.

You can find a mobile device through a computer in another way. To do this, you need to install the Android Devicemanager application on your gadget in advance and create an account with Google. This program allows you to control the location of mobile equipment. In particular, users through this application can send a sound signal to the phone, which turns off only after certain manipulations are performed (remove the battery, press a special button, and so on).

Using this utility, you can remotely block equipment and erase personal data. However, this program only works on Android mobile devices.

Setup

If you signed into your Samsung account during initial setup, like I said, odds are Find My Mobile is already turned on.

Check on your device by searching for Find My Mobile in the Settings app. Alternatively, you can go to Settings > Lock Screen and Security > Find My Mobile . If prompted, sign into your Samsung account to enable the feature.

I suggest turning on all options associated with the feature as well. Remote controls will allow you to do things like force a remote backup, retrieve call and message logs, enable battery saving features and so on. Google location service provides more accurate location information — vital at a time when you're tracking down a lost device. Send last location will monitor the device's battery and send its last known location right before it loses power.

Search by satellite

This search option is possible due to the fact that smartphones use SIM cards for communication, to which mobile operators can send a special signal. After this, the exact coordinates of the location of the lost device appear.

To find a lost phone, you need to go to the nearest branch of the mobile operator with your passport and submit the appropriate application. The time during which the search is conducted depends on technical capabilities. But this usually takes several hours.

This method is suitable for cases where the phone was lost and not stolen. Immediately after the device is in their hands, the attackers remove the SIM card, without which the mobile operator will not be able to send a signal and, as a result, receive the coordinates of the gadget’s location.

Using Google Location History

To find a lost Samsung gadget, we will need Google's location history, now known as the Timeline.

To work with it, the following conditions are required:

  • Your lost phone must be associated with a Google account;
  • Your smartphone must have access to the Internet before it was turned off;
  • You must have location reporting and location history enabled on your device (you can do this in the Google Settings app) on your phone;

Unlike the Find My Device tool, Google Maps' Timeline feature doesn't focus on tracking your Samsung. It uses location history data to determine the gadget's last recorded location by the system. This means that even if your phone's battery is dead, you can still find it.

Go to the Timeline service and make sure the current day is selected in the calendar.

Select the current day in the chronology

In the left sidebar, you can see a timeline for that day, including the names of all recorded locations. On the right you can see all the locations visualized on the map.

Data from the Timeline service from Google

The benefit of Timeline is the ability to track the location of your Samsung phone over a period of time. This way, even if someone stole it, you can identify actively visited places that could be the thief's home or place of work. This will help you in catching him.

Track visited locations with the Timeline service

How to find iPhone if silent mode is on

Finding an iPhone can be complicated by the fact that software developers for this device strive to protect users' personal data. In this regard, some functions of the smartphone are usually disabled.

So, to make searching for an iPhone not difficult, you need to:

  • Go to the settings section.
  • Open the “Privacy” and “Location Services” sections one by one.
  • Enable geolocation feature.

It is also recommended to activate the following functions in the settings:

  • "Timezone";
  • "Find iPhone";
  • “Search for cellular network”;
  • “Compass calibration”;
  • "Motion accounting".

After this, it is recommended to go to the “Confidentiality” section again and check whether the option is enabled that prohibits making changes without a password. By following these steps, your iPhone can be found anywhere using third-party devices.

Using the Find My iPhone app

This application is available on iOS mobile devices version seven and older. This option is often enabled by default. But to be on the safe side, it is recommended to carry out the steps described above. After activating this feature, the location of the iPhone will be determined in real time.

If you lose your smartphone, you must:

  1. Launch a browser on your computer and go to iCloud.com.
  2. Open the appropriate tab and see the current location of the iPhone.

If the smartphone is dead by the time the search begins, the application will show the last location of the device before it turned off. If you suspect that your iPhone has been stolen, the device can be blocked remotely through the same service. To do this, you need to launch “Lost Mode” in iCloud, and the built-in software will automatically lock the smartphone the next time you turn it on. Access to the device is granted only after entering the security code.

Using Apple Watch

Searching using an electronic watch is possible provided that the iPhone and Apple Watch have synchronized watches. In this case, the lost device can be found as follows:

  1. Open the settings section on Apple Watch.
  2. Click on the “Find iPhone” icon.
  3. Find your phone by sound signal.

You can also hold down this button for a few seconds, after which the flash will go off on your iPhone.

Track

Screenshot by Jason Cipriani/CNET
Samsung doesn't have an app you can use on another phone to track a lost device. Instead, you can use any mobile or desktop browser to visit findmymobile.samsung.com. Once there, log into your account and select the device you're looking for.

If it's powered on, you will see its current location and battery percentage. A popup will also provide a series of actions to take on the lost device:

  • Ring
  • Lock
  • Erase data
  • Back up
  • Retrieve calls and messages
  • Unlock
  • Extend battery life
  • Set guardian

Most of these are self-explanatory. There are a couple that are worth explaining a bit more. For example, retrieve calls and messages will sync with the phone and show you the last 50 calls and messages, complete with phone numbers.

The Extend battery option will provide the option to help you track it longer. Lastly, the Set Guardian option allows you to designate a friend or family member as someone who can log into Find My Mobile on your behalf to track or control your device.

Tips on how to protect yourself from theft or loss of your phone

To protect your phone from theft or loss, we recommend the following steps:

  1. Set a password and pattern. If it's an iPhone, you can choose to unlock using your fingerprint or FaceID.
  2. Launch pre-installed programs for searching for a lost smartphone or download new ones. Google and Apple are combining all mobile equipment registered to one person under a single account. This makes it easier to find lost devices from other devices.
  3. Enable the search option from your mobile operator (if provided for in the list of services provided).
  4. Install the SIM Alarm application on your smartphone. This program sends messages immediately after the SIM card is removed from the device.

In addition, to protect personal data, it is recommended:

  1. Check the functionality of the device's remote locking function.
  2. Set up data backups at least once a week.
  3. Store important information in a cloud service.
  4. Copy the IMEI into a notepad or other location.

Before installing a third-party application that supports finding a lost device, you need to check whether this program is able to communicate directly with Google Maps. Otherwise, you should download other developments. The fact is that if the program does not support the specified function, then if the gadget is lost, the application will not give the exact location coordinates.

Useless tips if your device is stolen

Find out IMEI and contact the police

In most cases, all documents containing IMEI are thrown away. Those who professionally steal phones know how to find them and change the IMEI.

Call your mobile operator to find out where the device is located

Operators do not provide information on the location of the device and do not block it. In most cases, the SIM card is immediately thrown away

Send an SMS to your number asking to return the phone for a reward

In most cases, the SIM card is immediately thrown away. There is no guarantee that the phone will be returned to you

Tips on how to protect yourself from theft or loss of your phone

This possibility cannot be completely excluded. However, by taking a number of measures, it can be reduced to a minimum. To do this, you need to follow the following simple tips:

Losing your phone is always an unpleasant event, but modern technologies make it possible to either avoid it altogether or make the search as easy as possible. For safety and peace of mind, it is better to take care in advance about duplicating important data, install special search applications and be extremely careful in public places and transport.

If you are “disappeared” and you have a phone with you

  1. Write SMS. This will help you find you faster. Moreover, in this case it doesn’t matter whether it was delivered or not.
  2. Call emergency services. In Russia it is 112.
  3. If your phone is based on Android, then you can download the Emergency SMS Alerts application, which can send an “alarm SMS” in which your coordinates will be indicated. To start sending an alarm SMS, you need to press the power button of your smartphone 2-5 times in a row.
  4. If your battery is low or you are in the cold, then remove the cover of the phone, remove the battery, warm it in your hands and put it back. This procedure will “revive” the phone and give you 40-50 seconds during which you can send an SMS.

That's probably all I wanted to tell you today. If it’s not difficult, share the link to this article with your friends. Perhaps one click of the mouse that you make now will save someone's life!
