Welcome everyone to the Wi-Fi guide portal. Today I will try to talk in more detail about how you can generally strengthen the signal of a Wi-Fi router (from Rostelecom, D-Link, TP-Link, ASUS, ZyXel Keenetic, Tenda, Netis and others). This article is a kind of continuation of this material, which I wrote six months ago. Therefore, if you have not read the first part yet, then let’s go there first.
If you want to understand this topic as accurately as possible and immerse yourself in it, I advise you to read all the additional information via the links. If you have any questions, write in the comments.
Replace the standard antenna with a more powerful one
Most routers are equipped with standard antennas with a gain of 2 - 3 dBi. The antenna is a passive element of the radio system and is not capable of increasing the flow power. However, increasing the gain allows you to refocus the radio signal by changing the radiation pattern.
Antenna gain is similar to focusing a flashlight beam: a narrow beam shines further than a wide beam.
The higher the antenna gain, the further the radio signal travels. In this case, the narrower flow becomes similar not to a “donut”, but to a flat disk.
There is a large selection of antennas for routers with a universal SMA connector on the market.
Replaceable omnidirectional antenna.
Omnidirectional whip antenna.
Directional indoor antenna.
In practice: Using an antenna with high gain is an effective way to expand the coverage area, because simultaneously with the signal amplification, the sensitivity of the antenna increases, which means the router begins to “hear” remote devices. But due to the narrowing of the radio beam from the antenna, dead zones appear near the floor and ceiling.
Transmission Power Gain
Another option is to go into the settings of the Rostelecom router and increase the signal transmission power. Depending on the type of router, the settings change stepwise or smoothly using a special slider. For example, in Asus products you need to move the TX Power toggle switch to the far right position.
On TP-Link, in the Wireless section, you need to go to the Advanced section and set High to Transmit.
As in previous cases, the entered data must be saved and wait until the device is rebooted.
What to do if nothing helps?
If it was not possible to strengthen the signal and range of the Rostelecom router Wi-Fi using the methods discussed above, an alternative option remains - replace the router with a new one or contact technical support and connect with a specialist. A company employee gives tips online and tells you how and what to do to improve the signal. At this moment you need to be near the computer to make changes. If the issue cannot be resolved this way, you can submit a request for a specialist to visit your home.
Method 3: Purchasing additional devices
In conclusion, we note that there are additional devices that may be useful. The first such equipment is called a repeater and is designed to connect to a Wi-Fi network to expand the coverage area. In stores you can find various repeaters that connect to a wall outlet or USB, but it is important that they support the same frequency at which the router operates.
There is no harm in using another router instead of a repeater, but it must be configured in a special mode. Read about an example of such a setting in a separate material on our website at the link below.

If you are confident that you can disassemble the router and replace the antenna yourself, purchase a more powerful option, paying attention to its standards. Buy omnidirectional antennas if several devices are connected to the router, and also take into account the standard parameters (b/n/g): frequency, gain level, length.
If none of this suits you or turns out to be ineffective, the only solution is to purchase more expensive equipment. On the Internet, you can find life hacks that recommend attaching tin cans to the router or using foil, but it is better to avoid such methods, since the result is rarely positive, but the time spent cannot be returned.

How to strengthen the signal of a wifi router
If you don’t know how to strengthen the wifi signal of a Rostelecom router. A router that supports wi-fi always comes with an antenna. If it is removable, you can buy another one with more power, measured in isotropic decibels. For a home distributor, a value of about 2 dBi is acceptable, but if there are problems with network distribution, pay attention to higher values. Antennas up to 24 dBi are sold on specialized websites. This is literally your ticket to a world of great hospitality.

Method 2: Software setup
Now let's talk about how to improve the signal programmatically, since there are several parameters in the router settings that affect the quality of the Wi-Fi connection. Before proceeding to view the following instructions, log in to the web interface. You will find detailed recommendations on this matter in a separate guide on our website at the link below.

Change channel
The first option is to change the wireless network channel. The fact is that the default channel selected may be loaded by other routers operating nearby, which leads to signal deterioration. To change, you only need to perform a few simple steps.
- First, in the settings menu, switch to Russian, if this has not been done previously, to make it easier to understand the items present.
- Go to the “Network” section through the panel at the top.
- On the left, select the wireless access point to configure.
- Expand the drop-down menu opposite the “Channel numbers” item. If the firmware supports display of congestion, select the most free channel. Otherwise, switch to 1 or 6 and then check if Wi-Fi stability changes somehow.
Setting the transmitter power
Transmitter power directly affects the size of the wireless network's coverage area and is set to the highest value by default. However, sometimes this parameter can go wrong or the user accidentally changes it, which leads to problems with the Wi-Fi signal range. Test this setting and then save your changes.
- In the same “Network” section, find the “Transmitter Power” item and set its value to 100%.
- Then go to the “Maintenance” section.
- Through the panel on the left, select “Reboot”.
- Confirm this operation and wait until the router restarts, and then check the network quality.
If changing the channel does not help or the signal becomes even worse, it is recommended to return the setting to its original value, but the transmitter power must be at maximum.
Possible causes of the problem
Not working Wi-Fi in the house can be akin to a disaster, especially if the performance of the TV also depends on it. Wireless communication, although very convenient, can cause a lot of nervous moments, especially if you don’t know why everything isn’t working.
Wi-FiRostelecom may not work due to:
- Technical work on the provider's line.
- Weather conditions.
- A clogged Wi-Fi channel in the evenings and on weekends, and a heavy load on the network.
- Failure of the settings of the router, computer and other gadgets.
- Unpaid Internet debt to Rostelecom for the next billing period.
- Technical malfunctions of equipment - router, computer, wires.
The last situation is the most difficult to eliminate, and it is the most frightening, since it may require additional costs.
The first two situations from the list are not at all under the control of the subscriber - you will just have to wait until the network is restored, which is disappointing, but does not indicate any breakdown.
The subscriber can solve other problems independently.
Location in the house
Do you need more options on how to strengthen the wifi signal of a Rostelecom router? If you don’t want to lighten your wallet by buying additional equipment, then there is an easier option - change your location.
Repeater for Rostelecom router
The area where the wi-fi distributor is located is important. It would be optimal to place it closer to the middle of the intended coverage area, but this is not always achievable. Otherwise, follow the “closer is better” rule when it comes to stationary electronics that you use frequently. This could be a PC or a modern TV with a Wi-Fi receiver. Place the Wi-Fi broadcaster as close as possible to these devices - you will notice that the reception has improved.
