The chief freelance specialist of the Russian Ministry of Health for medical prevention of the Ural Federal District, Sergei Tokarev, does not agree with his colleague. According to him, the “iota” strain is more pathogenic and contagious, and can also evade the immune response. Immunologist Nikolai Kryuchkov added that it is premature to draw conclusions - there is not enough data on the American strain yet.
Professor of the Department of Virology, Faculty of Biology, Moscow State University, Alexey Agranovsky, believes that vaccination will help defeat “iota”. He also recalled that the data received by American colleagues is still preliminary and raises many questions. Despite the fact that “iota” has not yet been recorded in Russia, it is important to identify it in time and break the chain of infection, the scientist added.
No one can say how much the coronavirus mutates in the world, as well as how many strains the virus has appeared. Six are recognized as the most significant: “Cluster 5” (discovered in Norway in minks), “alpha” (discovered in October 2021 in the UK), “beta” (found in the Republic of South Africa in May 2020), “gamma” (appeared in Brazil in November 2021), “lineage B.1.525” (raging in 15 countries, but most widespread in Nigeria and the UK) and “delta” (Indian), information about which has become increasingly alarming lately.
Four of these strains (alpha, beta, gamma and delta) have been designated as "variant of concern" by the World Health Organization.
