Applications for e-books on the Android operating system. Part 2. Bookstores and applications for reading books

Simple things turn out to be unsolvable problems for many. In particular, many people have a question: if I have a phone or tablet with the Android operating system, how can I read books on it, how to download them, how to load them into my phone, and how to read them in general?

I'll try to give advice using a simple method. In order to write and explain less, I’ll do everything in pictures. But first, I note that to read you need to use the excellent FBReader reader (manufacturer’s website and link to install from Google.Play) and the common e-book format fb2, and books can be obtained online. Find out how to connect everything into a convenient tool and how to download a book to Android in this article.

If you have problems with the resources described below, then read this article, maybe it will help you.

Instead of introducing

In the modern world, technology is being introduced into our lives so quickly that we don’t even notice how it’s happening.
Just think, just yesterday touchscreen phones and tablets appeared, just as today they are already using 3D holograms with all their might. Thus, at the prestigious Grammy music awards, spectators were able to watch the performance of the legendary Michael Jackson, who performed right in front of them. Of course, this was just a projection, however, the future is just around the corner. Perhaps we will soon see the introduction of this technology in Internet communications, then it will be possible to see, for example, products in their real size or even try them on. In general, science has something to do. And today we will learn how to download books in electronic format to our device. In the modern world, e-books are very popular

Recommended Specifications

It should be noted that not every device will allow you to get maximum pleasure from reading. The device must meet certain requirements. They all relate to the display:

  • Its diagonal must be at least 4.7 inches;
  • HD resolution is desirable (1280 x 720 pixels);
  • IPS and AMOLED manufacturing technologies are welcome.

However, all this does not mean that devices that do not meet the above requirements are completely unsuitable for reading books. Suffice it to recall the mid-2000s. Back then, some of us read books on Siemens mobile phones, whose screen resolution was 132 x 176 pixels. And someone could afford a device from Nokia or Sony Ericsson. But even there the resolution was not particularly high - usually it did not exceed 240 x 320 pixels. In a word, you can now read on any gadget - the above requirements are written for those who want to strain their eyesight as little as possible.

Chapter 1. How people stopped buying paper books

Have you ever thought about how often people go to a bookstore to make purchases? According to surveys conducted a couple of years ago, this number has decreased significantly. And this is due not only to the fact that people began to read less. We also need to take into account the fact that people have begun to use electronic versions of books more often. It is convenient and practical, as you can read your favorite novel anywhere and at any time. Of course, nothing can replace the paper version of a book, but there are significant reasons why we began to turn to electronic media.

Firstly, it is convenient, as mentioned above. Secondly, (and this is perhaps the most important point) e-books are much cheaper for the buyer. Agree that not everyone can afford to buy a detective story in a bookstore for 500 rubles. To be honest, not everyone can buy it even for 200 rubles. That's why people simply download the electronic version of the library onto their device. In this way, you can download some books completely free of charge. There is no denying the fact that this is much easier for the majority of the population of our country.

Using Google Play Books

Google Play Books

Developer: Google LLC

Price: Free

As you know, almost every smartphone based on the Android operating system has access to the Google Play online store. And for quite some time it has contained not only applications. Users have the opportunity to download music, videos and, of course, books. Each publication in the catalog is provided with a cover and a short description. There are also rating reviews here. Sometimes an introductory fragment is provided - 4-5 pages of text.

There are very few free books in this service. But the prices are not too high. There are no subscriptions or subscriptions here, which allows us to recommend Google Play Books only to those people who do not read every day. Note that as a reader, this application is not very pleasing. In fact, it is equipped with only basic functionality. As you might guess, you cannot add your own files here.

Chapter 2. Harm of e-books

Devices running Android are most often smartphones and tablets (meaning devices for reading books), that is, Google devices do not have special e-books with E-Link displays in their arsenal. These are screens that do not harm your eyesight and are almost identical to regular books. Electronic ink serves this purpose, but ordinary smartphones and Android tablets, on the contrary, have a very strong impact on vision and health in general. It’s not for nothing that doctors say that sitting at a computer for a long time is harmful, so you shouldn’t sit too long reading e-books, especially on a smartphone, because they have a small screen, which can greatly affect your vision.

How to download a book to your phone and start reading?

For this you will need a cord. We use it to connect the phone to the computer. Next, an autorun window will open on the monitor. You must select “open device to view files.” Then go to “my computer”, then to the downloads folder. After this, you need to find the electronic file, copy and paste it into any convenient folder in the window of the connected device.

After this, you can disconnect the phone from the computer and look for downloaded literature in the desired folder. You can open it using standard applications for text documents or using the book readers mentioned above. With the help of special applications, more opportunities for ease of reading open up: you can make bookmarks, adjust the desired font and screen brightness. And if you open a text document using standard applications, then each time you will have to look for where the reading process stopped.

Chapter 3. Let's move on to the most delicious part

If you are still determined to download the book on Android and don’t know how to do it, then you have moved to the right chapter. So, you should decide what you need: just an e-reader or an e-reader with a book store. The first option allows you to download books yourself from the Internet and simply read them using the application. The second option is suitable for those who are ready to shell out a little money, but still use licensed content.

Simple readers

So, as we already said, these applications simply open books downloaded from the Internet, that is, you can log into Google or Yandex and download a book from some site, and then read it in the application. The advantage of such programs is that you can read books and stories for free. The downside is that you will have to look for books on the Internet, where you can accidentally catch a virus or you will accidentally download the wrong version of the book (for those who care about translation and publishing).

We present a list of the most popular e-readers for devices running Android OS, which you can download from the Google Play Market app store:

  • FBReader. This is perhaps the most popular and convenient tool for reading e-books. You can also download plugins for FBreader: PDF and Djvu. They expand the functionality of the standard program, allowing you to read additional formats.
  • PocketBook reader. It is also a very convenient reader, which has many interesting functions, for example, you can select fragments of books and save them as notes. Also, an undoubted advantage of the application will be support for a large number of formats (and there is no need to install additional plugins). In general, the bookworm will be happy.
  • AlReader - book reader. It has similar functionality as the previous ones. You can change the mode (one- and two-page), has four color profiles and much more! You will definitely like this reader, and therefore will serve you faithfully.

Readers with a built-in store

Now you can move on to applications that allow you to download your favorite book directly in the application. This is much more convenient and reliable in the sense that you definitely won’t have problems with word wrapping and other problems that can arise in regular e-readers. But sometimes you have to pay money for quality, although the presented programs have a fairly impressive number of free books, which cannot but please the user. So, let's move on to e-readers with a built-in store:

  • liters: Read. Who hasn't heard of liters? Few people do, but that already says something. More than seven thousand books are presented here for free, and new items are always released along with a paper version. You can read the program's features on the Play Market application page.
  • MyBook - library and books. The form of purchasing content is different in that here books are purchased not one by one, but by subscription, that is, you pay a certain amount monthly and get an entire library at your disposal. There are also thousands of free books here, which is a definite advantage of the program.
  • Amazon Kindle. The program will be especially useful to owners of Kindle e-readers. All data will be synchronized, which will help avoid unnecessary problems with downloading books to each device. Please note that this reader reads a specific format (amz, mobi and pdf), so you cannot load any book there. In addition, you yourself can upload a book downloaded from the Internet there, and not just use the store.

Download the book using your computer

It is very easy to download a book to your phone using a computer. The computer in this case will act as a conductor. In general, it’s easier to send the file directly via phone, but there are cases when this is not possible. For example, the Internet is not configured or Wi-Fi is not working. Then you will need a phone, a computer and a USB cable.

To do this, you will need to find an electronic book edition on the Internet from your computer. In this case, you need to open your browser and write in the search bar the name of a specific book or a general search query. What are they? For example, “download a book for free” or “download Ray Bradbury dandelion wine for free.” Next, you need to go to the website and download the document you like.

Chapter 4. Final

Well, we got to know e-books for Android devices better and learned about their pros and cons. We also looked a little at the problem of electronic books in relation to paper copies. And most importantly, you now know how to download or upload a book to Android. You can have both simple readers and readers with a built-in library at your disposal. As they say, for every taste and color. Don’t forget about your health and don’t sit too long in front of your smartphone or tablet screen.

Happy reading, dears. Share your favorite works in the comments! Maybe someone can recommend something to read on a pleasant Sunday evening?

Connecting an online library to FBReader

Copy link text:

https://flibusta.is/opds

This is what we will connect to the installed FBReader reader. Look at the pictures with frames and backgrounds, these are instructions for you. Here in the picture below it is indicated that you need to click the network libraries icon.

The ready-made set already contains various network libraries. You can even use something if you manage to make payments correctly. I suggest connecting a new one (and you can delete the old one).

And so: Click ADD... specify the URL as in the picture and OK.

Copy link text:

https://flibusta.is/opds

If you have problems with this resource, read here.

You will be prompted to save the directory with this name... Although you can rename it...

We can make it clear for ourselves and rename it as we want...

Now you have your own brand new online catalog or, more precisely, settings with a method for connecting to it. To enter it you just need to click on it...

Xender

Xender is similar in functionality to Shareit, but it has a significant difference. It can use both a web interface and a desktop version for Windows. You can transfer any type of files: documents, music, photos, videos and applications. You can create groups of up to 4 devices and simultaneously transfer files to all four.

All you need to do to activate the web interface is to click on the “Receive Data” button and then select the “Connect to PC” option. The application will show the IP address, which you need to open in the browser and confirm the connection on your phone. Xender is free to use, but at the cost of being distracted by advertisements.

Recall

Recall is a free Android app that creates a server on your phone for wireless data exchange with your PC. To transfer the necessary files, you just need to scan the QR code - you don’t need to install anything on your PC. There are no restrictions on transferring, including the size of transferred files.

With Recall you don't even need to create an account and there are no ads. Exchange is possible between the phone and any PC connected to the Internet; the transfer takes place on a peer-to-peer basis without any intermediaries.

After installation, the application will automatically generate a list of files and folders on the device that can be shared. Select the one you need, click the Share button and the application will generate a peer-to-peer link. Open it on any PC and download – it’s simple.

If you don’t want to work with links, you can connect your phone and PC - open the menu in the top right and select the web-share function. Next, scan the QR code on the Recall website page and you can start transferring files - nothing complicated.

There are several applications for exchanging data between your phone and PC, but KDE Connect sometimes has bugs, and ShareMe requires you to create an FTP server, so we recommend paying attention to Recall. It's not a top-end app, but it's ideal for sharing documents and apps.

What determines the choice of format

The choice of extension format for the final file depends on a large number of factors. This includes both the capabilities of the program with which you plan to read, as well as personal preferences.

Taking into account such factors, the most common are:

  1. Fiction Book is chosen due to its high content download rate and prevalence, and is one of the most popular.
  2. The txt extension is considered the simplest; it stores documents with plain text, without complex formatting and images.
  3. The doc format allows for multi-level formatting and uploading of images. However, it cannot import the workbook completely.
  4. RTF is a more progressive version of the previous format and has expanded functionality in terms of file operation.
  5. And finally, another well-known format in which most users save files is called PDF. Together with FB2, it is among the most used formats for downloading from the Internet.
FormatReasons for prevalence
FB2Fast loading, widespread, many
applications, can be read on any

devices, saves documents well.

PDFOften used in standard and
specialized literature, there are

applications for working with embroidery.

DOCComplex formatting is available, graphic images can be loaded, it is popular among Microsoft Word files, and is actively used in coursework and master's theses.
RTFRetains the advantages of DOC,
advanced functionality, storage of large files, works with complex text formats and saves large graphic images
TXTIdeal for standard text files, it takes up very little space on
devices.

As already mentioned, the choice will depend on your own preferences and functionality of electronic devices. When searching for formats, it is best to focus on the most popular options in the form of Fiction Book and PDF.

Then you can connect a flash drive and transfer everything you need to other devices after checking for viruses.

What book format does Android support?

Some people believe that the Android operating system only supports a certain book format. But in reality, it all depends on what application you install. Some programs have a short list of supported formats, others have an almost endless list.

We recommend downloading works with the .fb2 extension. For some time now, this format has become the most popular. It can contain illustrations, a cover, footnotes and other elements of paper publications familiar to us. However, FB2 is still not as advanced in the graphics department as we would like. Because of this, it only contains books. If you want to read magazines, they must be saved in PDF format. But to read them you will need a completely different program, and this is a topic for a separate article.

Other common book formats are EPUB (comes from hardware e-readers), MOBI, TXT (just text, no formatting), CHM (usually help files are stored in this format), CBR and CBZ (the last two can store comics) .

Other programs

The AReader program (Android Reader) has large book databases and has a simple and user-friendly interface.
AReader supports many different formats, including EPUB and PDF. Other noteworthy features include realistic visual effects that simulate turning real paper pages; Useful controls like adjusting brightness, adjusting font size, and setting day and night styles. The AReader application will allow the phone owner to download many books for free.

Wattpad is considered the largest community of readers and writers around the world. This is the place where you can find thousands of volumes written by the best emerging authors from different countries. Wattpad is now available on Android, thanks to which mobile device users can view and download more than 3 million books, including romance, science fiction and any other genres. You can even share the books you read with your friends through your social network account.

There is a function for downloading unique copyright content that the user has written independently. The app has built-in features of auto scrolling, offline reading and night mode. Wattpad gives you access to a huge library with something for everyone.

Pushbullet

Pushbullet is popular among system administrators and ordinary users, and this is not surprising. This is a very simple application that connects your smartphone and computer. Once you start using it, you won't understand how you ever functioned without it.

To send a file to your phone, you just need to drag it into the desktop program, which will be located in the Windows system tray. It will immediately download to your phone and appear in the notification panel. If you need to send from your mobile to your computer, select the desired file, click the “Share” button and select Pushbullet from the menu.

Transfer files via USB cable

The easiest way to transfer a file from your computer to your phone (or vice versa) is to use a USB cable. Nowadays you don’t even need to buy such cables separately; they come included with almost every modern phone. If you have one on hand, and your PC has at least one working USB port, then you can assume that your files have already been transferred.

  1. First, connect your PC and phone using a wire.
  2. After this, a notification should arrive on your phone, open it and select “File Transfer” from the options offered.

  3. Now go to “My Computer”, a new connected device should appear here, this is your phone.

The further process is similar to a regular file transfer, except that it takes longer. Simply copy any file on one device and paste it into any folder on the other.
