Telephone codes of Russian cities: republics, territories, regions, districts.

What does a phone number look like in Russia?

Depending on the source of information, the phone number you are calling may look different. Let us remind you that this resource is for those who want to call Russia from abroad. Perhaps the information is familiar and obvious, but for many it will be useful to know, for example, that some numbers and characters included in the standard Russian number are not used when calling to Russia from the USA, Canada, Europe and other countries. Examples of telephone numbers in Russia: (812) 555-12-34 (495) 555-1234 + 7 (922) 555-1234 8-499-555-1234 (35222) 55-512 8-800-555-1234

All codes used by cellular operators in the Russian Federation are listed below. For each code there is detailed information: operators, regions, year of entry.

What is a cell phone number? According to the telephone numbering plan of the Russian Federation, cellular operator codes are represented by a three-digit number starting with 9. The code is followed by a seven-digit subscriber number.

General view of the code: 9xx General view of the telephone number: +7 9хх xxx-xx-xx

Cellular operator codes are called non-geographic telephone codes or def codes. Cellular companies are assigned a specific code (or several codes) and a range of numbers for subscribers.

In addition, for the “mobile troika” there are entire series of codes that have the same second digit: 92x, 93x - Megafon 91x, 98x - MTS 96x - Beeline Thus, if you receive a call from a number starting, for example, at +7 92..., then you can be sure that the call is from Megafon. In different regions, the same mobile operator may have a different range of numbers. For example, code 905 and a number from the range 2500000-2899999 belongs to Beeline (JSC Vympel-Communications) in St. Petersburg, and code 905 and the range 1830000-1849999 also belongs to Beeline, but in the Ulyanovsk region.

The numbering of def codes has changed over time. One of the changes is related to the transition of cellular companies from geographic codes (4xx) to non-geographic codes (9xx). Thus, in Moscow, MTS switched from 495 to 985, Megafon - from 495 to 925. Thus, codes 925 and 985 currently duplicate direct Moscow numbers. Another change is related to the release by the operator of some codes and the transition to others. For example, the MTS operator in 2002 and 2003 switched from 902 to the now familiar 910, 912, 916.

There is a correspondence table for each code (the list of codes is presented on this page just above). However, after about it will not be possible to unambiguously answer the questions “which operator with code 903?”, “which operator code 910?” and the like.

The emergence of this format

For convenience, a single unified system has been created, thanks to which users communicate with each other and the number is identified. The latter service is built into all tariffs and is provided free of charge.

There are two accepted numbering methods in the world: open and closed. The first of them allows you to call other subscribers without using an area code. A closed plan implies the introduction of a full-length number even for local calls; intercity communication or with foreigners follows the same scheme.

The open plan is more convenient, but it is rarely used, since everyone is trying to focus on the international format. Recently, Moscow completely switched to it, so numbers of 5 or 7 characters are no longer available to residents of the capital. This format remains only for communication within one region between landline phones. When traveling long distance you will have to indicate the number of the locality, and when communicating with foreigners you will have to additionally enter +7.

How the phone works

There is no need to say that the first samples needed complex telephone exchanges. The very first representatives of this type of communication generally worked only on the principle of direct connection. That is, it was necessary to stretch the wire from the caller to the person he was calling. Of course, such an idea had no future as a mass phenomenon, although it is still used today. For example, as a means of secret communication, when the signal must under no circumstances be intercepted. Direct communication in this case is the optimal solution.

In order to be able to connect subscribers within a city, then in different cities, and as networks developed, even at the international level, telephone exchanges were created. That is, a person contacted such a station and the telephone operator (usually a telephone operator) connected him to the desired subscriber. The process was complex, unreliable, and required a large number of people to sit and literally physically connect one wire to another.

Whatever you say, it was difficult work.

That is why, with the advent of more modern technologies, this connection method was replaced by a simpler method of automatic telephone exchanges. At the beginning, automatic telephone exchanges were the simplest and did not always work stably, having a large number of relays and other auxiliary elements. Nowadays, they have almost completely switched to digital standards.

An example of PBX operation that anyone who picked up the phone to call someone could feel was the dial tone. That same long beep, which meant that the telephone exchange was ready to receive command signals. At this moment, the subscriber could begin to dial codes, which we will return to later, and the number itself.

PBXs are machine-based, decade-step, coordinate, quasi-electronic, electronic analog, electronic digital and Internet PBX. Now we will not dwell on them in detail, since this topic can be expanded into a separate article, and if you are interested, write in the comments or in our Telegram chat. If there is interest, I will prepare a separate article. For now, let’s talk about telephone exchange codes and why you need to call Russia by dialing “+7”.

How to dial a landline number in another country from a mobile phone

Dialing the number in this case will be almost the same. Only the code of the country whose connection to the subscriber is required is added.

The + sign before the country code is required. There should be no spaces or any symbols between the code and the phone number.

The number of digits for country code dialing may vary. For example, in Russia or the United States the code is single digit (+7 and +1, respectively), but in France or the Dominican Republic it consists of 2 and 4 digits.

Countries and cities of the World

Most major cities in the world have their own telephone code. To simplify and systematize, international telephone numbers are also used to reach a specific country. Therefore, to call any city in the world, you must first dial the international country code, and then that city.

A telephone code is unique only within its own country. And besides, some small towns are combined into groups with the same prefixes.

How to call from mobile to home: step-by-step instructions

Let's consolidate the material with a small list of actions.

  1. Check your phone balance. Calls are quite expensive, and if you don’t have enough money, they can run out at the most inopportune moment.
  2. Determine the country code you are going to call. Find out which locality the call will be made to and specify its code. The easiest way would be to Google or use the phone book.
  3. Check your subscriber number just in case.
  4. Dial the number in the format “country code – city code – subscriber number”.
