History of MTS logo changes

Throughout its existence, the company has rebranded several times, including its logo.

2002

2002 - MTS logo remains the same. The only change is that the icon is now placed in a rectangle. An important difference in the logo design is that the figure is painted yellow. The rectangle has a cut in the upper left corner. Thus, the logo is shaped like a SIM card.

2006

2006 - a thorough rebranding, the result of which is familiar to millions of Russians. Why does MTS now have an egg logo? “It reflects simplicity, as well as a rich past, an active present and a successful, prosperous future.

The 2006 emblem is a red rectangle divided into two equal squares by a vertical line. On one of the segments (left) there is a white egg, on the other (right) there is the inscription “MTS”.

2010

2010 - the symbol differs in volume, font and composition. In addition, the rectangle is no longer divided into squares. The font becomes more original, the letters become a little taller and have more elongated edges. The egg image is placed in a red volumetric square, the color of which is slightly darker than the background.

2015

2015 - the new MTS logo is flat again: the volume disappears. There is a contrasting change in color: now the text and symbol are red, and the background is white. In addition, the square in which the image of the egg was placed disappears. The size of the inscription becomes the same as the graphic element. The font style also changes: the letters are chopped again, and the letter C becomes more elongated to the right.

2019

2019 - MTS company changed its corporate style. Now the egg has been replaced by a line extending from the letter M.

Expansion in the 2010s

In 2010, the MTS brand was valued at $9.7 billion, which made it the most expensive brand in Russia (according to the Brandz agency).

In the spring, MTS and , part of the MTS Group of Companies, presented new products for access to the global Network using wired and wireless technologies.

Interesting fact! At the end of the year, the operator suspended operations in Turkmenistan due to a conflict with the authorities of the republic and its decision to suspend the license of the MTS subsidiary. Restored work in the summer of 2012.

In 2011, in connection with the adoption of a new development strategy, the operator focused on business development in its key regions. A GSM 900 license was obtained in the Penza region - thus, the entire territory of Russia entered the MTS operating area.

As part of the agreement with the Big Three operators, communication facilities were created on the Amur highway. In the fall, a unique project for the Russian Federation was launched for contactless payment for fuel at gas stations (in collaboration with). By winter, the first system of instant payments through vending machines began operating.

At the end of the year, MTS mobile communications in Moscow were recognized as the most reliable according to Systemics-PAB.

In the spring of 2012, the operator launched a TDD LTE (4th generation) network in Moscow in test mode. Digital television was launched in 150 cities of Russia, and users were given access to HD quality content.

MTS continued to buy new subsidiaries, strengthening its position in the areas of fixed-line communications, cable television, and the Internet.

Together with MasterCard, a technological solution based on NFC technology was implemented, which provided consumers with the opportunity to pay for purchases using a smartphone with one touch.

In 2013, MTS was actively involved in the development of the 4G standard: the fourth generation network was expanded in Moscow, and in the summer a cooperation agreement was signed with Ericsson and Nokia Siemens Networks in the construction of 4G networks in Russian regions.

Interesting fact! In 2014, the cellular operator completed the construction of a backbone communication line (FOCL) with a length of 5.3 thousand km. It runs between Siberia and the Far East and has provided an opportunity for further development of networks in the eastern regions of Russia.

MTS was the first to launch a fragment of the LTE network in the metro, choosing the Gorkovskaya station in St. Petersburg for this.

In partnership with the operator, it announced work on the deployment of LTE networks in 36 regions of Russia. In total, by the end of 2014, MTS launched 4G communications in 76 Russian regions.

In the fall of 2014, the company began providing satellite television services under its own brand (as part of cooperation with Sistema Mass Media).

Next year, construction of a redundant transport network in the east of Russia was completed at a cost of 2.25 billion rubles. Work on the development of the LTE standard continued, and an agreement was concluded with Ericsson to develop a 5G communication standard in the Russian Federation.

In 2021, MTS entered into an agreement with Samsung Electronics on cooperation in the development of Samsung branded stores in Russia. In the summer, a memorandum was signed with Russian Railways on the development of mobile communication networks along the Moscow-St. Petersburg railway line with an investment of 500 million rubles.

Interesting fact! In coordination with Nokia Corp. successful tests of 5G technology were carried out, achieving a record data transfer speed of 4.5 Gbit/s.

In 2021, the number of subscribers decreased by 2.2%, which was the result of saturation of the Russian mobile market. Management decided to launch a new strategy in customer relations, which resulted in a decrease in SIM card sales by 11%.

Over the past year, MTS has strengthened its networks by building about 13 thousand LTE stations, resulting in up to 60% of Russians in the coverage area.

Detailed information about tariffs, services and services of the operator can be found on the official website www.mts.ru. The company's subscribers can manage their communications using the My MTS application, which provides the ability to independently connect/disconnect services and monitor expenses.

MTS calls abroad cost

The prices for the services of this plan directly depend on a large number of factors. What matters is the chosen tariff, the number of additional minutes provided and the volume of quality traffic provided. Based on them, you can determine for yourself which MTS tariff is the most profitable for roaming abroad.

The established tariffs are completely similar to the standard ones, and activation can be done at the operator’s office or in the personal section on the portal. Payment for services is transferred once every 30 days. This may be writing off the full amount or splitting it into separate parts, which is important if the required amount is not available in the account.

Scandals associated with the company

Such a large corporation could not avoid dark spots in its history. Those who own MTS phone numbers are probably familiar with the scandals and rumors that arise from time to time in the media.

The peak of the hype came in 2010. At that time, some of the old subscribers were affected. Without explaining any reasons, their tariffs were changed by the company itself to less favorable ones. They quickly “ate up” the account and drove subscribers into a state of chronic debt. Those who suffered the most were those whose SIM cards were inactive at that moment. These people were quite surprised to find receipts for debt to the company.

Roaming subscribers also suffered. Money could have been written off from their account just like that, which caused more than one lawsuit.

Criminal cases were brought against the company for introducing paid services without the knowledge of subscribers. This also had an adverse effect on the company's popularity.

  • Company name: MTS
  • Legal form of activity: Public joint stock company
  • Type of activity: cellular communication services
  • Revenue for 2021: RUB 435.7 billion.
  • Beneficiary: AFK Sistema
  • Number of personnel: more than 70 thousand people.
  • The site of the company:

The mobile communications market in the Russian Federation is currently one of the most dynamically developing. MTS PJSC is one of the main players in this market - it is a large telecommunications company operating in Russia and the CIS countries. The operator’s development history spans 15 years, and during this time the number of its subscribers has grown to 110 million people (as of 2021).

Way of development

Until the nineties of the last century, no one could have imagined that the 900 MHz frequency range, intended for communication between pilots and military personnel, would not only be used for peaceful purposes, but would serve to create a cellular communications market.

In 1992, a prototype of a modern GSM system was introduced, and later a competition was announced for the ownership of the GSM-900 license. At that moment, a key event for the company occurred. The victory in this competition was won by the monopolistic association Mobile Moscow, which was later renamed MTS.

The rights to the company at that time were divided between OJSC MGTS (Moscow City Telephone Network), the German company DeTeMobil, Siemens and a number of small shareholders. Later, the shares were redistributed several times, but most of them remained in the hands of domestic entrepreneurs, who still own MTS.

The foundation of the company was laid. A new cellular operator was introduced to the world, and network coverage, which in 1994 had only one BSS station, began to rapidly expand. The customer base, initially numbering only a few thousand subscribers, exceeded a million in a few years.

This happened for two main reasons. First, the company moved from large centers to regions, actively expanding the scope of its service in places where there was practically no mobile communication. A recognizable number was spreading more and more throughout the country. MTS quickly captured the market. The success was affected by the effect of novelty, the lack of worthy competition, the expansion of the technical base and the construction of new networks. Those who owned an MTS number found themselves in an advantageous position.

The second reason for economic victories was the active takeover of small companies also providing communication services. This facilitated the legal side of the issue regarding the granting of a license to provide telecommunications services. Thus, a significant amount of shares of the Ukrainian operator UMC was purchased. The corporation grew like a snowball, sweeping away competitors along the way.

What is the price

Many questions concern the cost of international MTS roaming and expenses when traveling abroad. This parameter depends on the availability of additional options, as well as the country where the traveler is visiting. There is no need to pay for connection or disconnection. There are also no monthly payments for using the service.

When considering how much international roaming on MTS costs, it is necessary to take into account a number of other points. Let's highlight the main ones:

  • Billing occurs on a per-minute basis, rounded up;
  • there is no connection fee;
  • when calculating Internet traffic, an interval of 40 kB is taken;
  • voice services are charged online;
  • There may be a delay in debiting your account in some countries.

Before traveling, it is advisable to check the rates with the operator to avoid unnecessary expenses.

MTS options for roaming abroad

Thanks to the offers, users of this operator can use standard conversation options, send various messages, and go online. Among the main advantages are:

  • Convenient payment of subscription fees. If a person goes abroad for a long time, funds will be withdrawn once a week. If these are periodic trips, the tariff will automatically switch to normal;
  • No need to make any special settings;
  • After the limit is completely exhausted, the Internet does not turn off completely, the access speed simply decreases. After the limitation, it will be equal to 128 kb/sec.

There are also some disadvantages to this profitable and convenient offer. Here we can note some traffic limitation, which is 500 MB per day. You need to know that call minutes are also limited. If there is an overrun, you will have to pay 25 rubles per minute over.

Are there prospects for a new strategy?

The announced changes are an update of the current MTS strategy. The new concept is focused on maintaining leadership in the telecom services market, increasing the efficiency of operations and finding new growth points in digital services for Russian clients, says Alfa Bank senior analyst Anna Kurbatova. “In general, this strategy corresponds to the general trend in the industry to ensure a greater presence of operators in complementary markets with faster growth rates than in traditional telecom,” Kurbatova is sure.

MTS’s strategy does not look like a breakthrough, agrees Otkritie Broker investment manager Timur Nigmatullin, but it has several interesting nuances that, with a successful set of circumstances, could allow the company to maintain leadership in the Russian market in the long term.

Unlike competitors who are actively developing partnerships, MTS is trying to form its own ecosystem, as it has the appropriate financial capabilities. “But the risks of such an approach are great. An excessive increase in capital investments is possible, which may not be justified. For companies that have taken a stable place in their segment, this is a double risk. People invest in telecom for the sake of stable dividends, and the operator’s active withdrawal from traditional business may cause concern among investors,” notes Nigmatullin.

According to him, so far there are no examples on the Russian market when mobile operators without partners managed to successfully develop their non-telecommunications segments. “Previously, Veon wrote off its multimillion-dollar investment in the application of the same name, and it is not clear why similar investments in the conditional “My MTS” in the base scenario will not be written off by MTS sooner or later. However, if management motivation is adequate, a breakthrough scenario is possible,” Nigmatullin suggests.

Market oversaturation

By 2021, the company had lost a small number of subscribers. This situation has arisen due to the fact that, according to the law and antitrust policy, cellular operators can use the towers of other large companies on a lease basis.

Because of this innovation, many new operators began to appear on the market. This led to the loss of some MTS clients.

However, the company decides to change the policy and make it more customer-oriented. Now it pays more attention to communication with clients, developing new services and packages of offers, promotions and discounts.

Despite the loss of some clients, all the company’s indicators are only growing, and it has entered the top of the richest organizations in the Russian Federation.

Leonid Melamed and Mikhail Shamolin

After a global rebranding of the company, as a result of which it acquired its current appearance, Mikhail Shamolin took the helm, replacing Leonid Melamed. The latter did not renounce business and became president of AFK Sistema. But he is interesting not only for this. Melamed is the person who previously owned MTS. He proposed making the familiar red and white egg the symbol of the company, symbolizing the simplicity of its form and promising content.

Shamolin already had behind him not only the Automobile and Highway Institute, but also the knowledge acquired at the Russian Academy of Public Administration.

The School of Business (WBS) in the field of finance and management also influenced him. It was she who prepared the springboard for his career growth: from a position at McKinsey&Co to the managing director of the Ukrainian corporation Interpipe. Next, his path lay in MTS, where he first held the position of vice president of sales, and three years later became president of the company.

How to find out who owns an MTS phone number

It often happens that subscribers receive calls from people they do not know. If a person simply has the wrong number, this is quite acceptable. If an unknown person is too annoying, no one likes it. Of course, such situations arise not only with MTS subscribers. How to find out who owns a phone? This is not as easy to do as it might seem.

The fact is that MTS operators do not have the right to disclose confidential information to private individuals. Only representatives of certain services, for example, the police, can recognize her. If they call you on the MTS number and threaten you, write a statement to the authorities.

You can find out information for a fee using the company directory. To do this, you will need to fill out a special form on the website “number. RU". Another option is to buy a database on the radio market.

Roaming in CIS countries

Countries neighboring Russia have different roaming tariffs for Russian MTS. The cheapest calls will be where the operator has its branches - in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and South Ossetia.

A minute of outgoing calls within the host country, incoming calls and calls to Russia from an MTS SIM card in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan will be 45 rubles/min, from the Kazakh region - 55 rubles. Make calls to other countries – the same amount of 135 rubles/min. Cheaper communications are charged in the South Ossetian District :

  • One minute of calls within the region – 17 rubles;
  • One minute of calls to the Russian Federation – 17 rubles;
  • Calls to nearby Commonwealth and CIS countries will cost 38 rubles. minute;
  • Contacting distant countries of the world – 129 rubles/min;
  • Sending SMS – 4.5 rub.

But in neighboring Abkhazia, roaming is more expensive – it’s 155 rubles/min. in all directions. Georgia provides a minute of calls within and in the Russian Federation for 115 rubles, and outside the Russian Federation - 135 rubles. The price for SMS to any number, unless otherwise indicated, is normally 19 rubles.

An excerpt characterizing MTS Belarus

- Come on, ma cousine, where do you get your information from? On the contrary... - I will not submit to your Napoleon. Others do whatever they want... If you don’t want to do it... - Yes, I will do it, I’ll order it now. The princess was apparently annoyed that there was no one to be angry with. She sat down on a chair, whispering something. “But this is being conveyed to you incorrectly,” said Pierre. “Everything is quiet in the city, and there is no danger.” I was reading just now...” Pierre showed the princess the posters. – The Count writes that he answers with his life that the enemy will not be in Moscow. “Oh, this count of yours,” the princess spoke angrily, “is a hypocrite, a villain who himself incited the people to rebel.” Wasn’t he the one who wrote in those stupid posters that whoever he was, drag him by the crest to the exit (and how stupid)! Whoever takes it, he says, will have honor and glory. So I was quite happy. Varvara Ivanovna said that her people almost killed her because she spoke French... “But it’s so... You take everything to heart,” said Pierre and began to play solitaire. Despite the fact that the solitaire had worked out, Pierre did not go to the army, but remained in empty Moscow, still in the same anxiety, indecision, in fear and at the same time in joy, expecting something terrible. The next day, the princess left in the evening, and his chief manager came to Pierre with the news that the money he required to outfit the regiment could not be obtained unless one estate was sold. The general manager generally represented to Pierre that all these undertakings of the regiment were supposed to ruin him. Pierre had difficulty hiding his smile as he listened to the manager’s words. “Well, sell it,” he said. - What can I do, I can’t refuse now! The worse the state of affairs, and especially his affairs, was, the more pleasant it was for Pierre, the more obvious it was that the catastrophe he was waiting for was approaching. Almost none of Pierre's acquaintances were in the city. Julie left, Princess Marya left. Of the close acquaintances, only the Rostovs remained; but Pierre did not go to them. On this day, Pierre, in order to have fun, went to the village of Vorontsovo to see a large balloon that was being built by Leppich to destroy the enemy, and a test balloon that was supposed to be launched tomorrow. This ball was not ready yet; but, as Pierre learned, it was built at the request of the sovereign. [As soon as Leppich is ready, assemble a crew for his boat of loyal and intelligent people and send a courier to General Kutuzov to warn him. I informed him about this. Please instruct Leppich to pay careful attention to the place where he descends for the first time, so as not to make a mistake and not fall into the hands of the enemy. It is necessary that he coordinate his movements with the movements of the commander-in-chief.] Returning home from Vorontsov and driving along Bolotnaya Square, Pierre saw a crowd at Lobnoye Mesto, stopped and got off the droshky. It was the execution of a French chef accused of espionage. The execution had just ended, and the executioner was untying a pitifully moaning fat man with red sideburns, blue stockings and a green camisole from the mare. Another criminal, thin and pale, stood right there. Both, judging by their faces, were French. With a frightened, painful look, similar to that of the thin Frenchman, Pierre pushed through the crowd. - What is this? Who? For what? - he asked. But the attention of the crowd - officials, townspeople, merchants, men, women in cloaks and fur coats - was so greedily focused on what was happening at Lobnoye Mesto that no one answered him. The fat man stood up, frowning, shrugged his shoulders and, obviously wanting to express firmness, began to put on his doublet without looking around him; but suddenly his lips trembled, and he began to cry, angry with himself, as adult sanguine people cry. The crowd spoke loudly, as it seemed to Pierre, in order to drown out the feeling of pity within itself. “Someone’s princely cook...” “Well, monsieur, apparently the Russian jelly sauce set the Frenchman on edge... set his teeth on edge,” said the wizened clerk standing next to Pierre, while the Frenchman began to cry. The clerk looked around him, apparently expecting an assessment of his joke. Some laughed, some continued to look in fear at the executioner, who was undressing another.
