The largest cellular operator in Russia, MTS PJSC, is gradually gaining market share among wireline data transmission providers. Users connect to the network mainly using FTTP technology; where such technical capabilities do not yet exist, the old ADSL technology is used.
To transmit data, the MTS provider uses GPON technology, which allows, using the capabilities of modern types of optical fiber, to transmit not only packet Internet traffic in both directions, but also conduct television broadcasts, as well as provide customers with landline voice communication services. Modern GPON technology allows you to access the Internet at speeds of up to 1 Gbit per second.
As for residents of the capital, the MTS company has teamed up with the MGTS company (part of the same holding) to develop additional offers for its subscribers in the provision of wireline communication services. In this article we will look at the conditions under which wired “Home Internet” from MTS is connected and what opportunities it provides to users.
Limits and prices
Like absolutely all Internet service providers, the cost of using “Home Internet” from MTS depends on the subscriber’s region of connection. Payment for using access to the global network occurs monthly, the calculation is made after using the channel for a month, but implies an initial advance minimum payment. The main tariff plans offered by the provider are unlimited in terms of traffic volume.
Important! To use unlimited tariffs from MTS, you must use only one IP address using the PPPoE protocol. The use of fixed IP addresses, additional PPPoE IP addresses and subnets is not available.
Let's consider how much you will need to pay for different Internet connection speeds in the regions of Russia.
Connection using FTTP technology via GPON channel
- “Economy” tariff - speed of 20 Mbit per second for 350 rubles per month (with an increase in access speed at night to 40 Mbit per second).
- Tariff “Profitable 50” - speed of 50 Mbit per second for 500 rubles per month (with an increase in access speed at night to 100 Mbit per second, an additional Wi-Fi router from MTS is rented for free).
- “Comfort” tariff - speed of 50 Mbit per second for 500 rubles per month (with an increase in access speed at night to 100 Mbit per second).
- “Prestige” tariff - speed of 80 Mbit per second for 650 rubles per month (with an increase in access speed at night to 100 Mbit per second).
ADSL connection
- “Economy” ADSL tariff – speed 5 Mbit per second for num»350 rubles per month.
You can find out more about the tariffs and prices on the page of the company’s official website in the main menu item “Home Internet and TV” in the “Tariffs” section at: https://www.mts.ru/dom/home_inet/tariffs.
The following tariffs are offered to metropolitan subscribers:
- Tariff “60” - speed 60 Mbit per second for 360 rubles per month.
- Tariff “200” - speed 200 Mbit per second for 490 rubles per month.
- Tariff “500” - speed 500 Mbit per second for 16,000 rubles per month.
And plans with daily tariffs if you have a city telephone line connection using ADSL technology:
- 6 Mbit per second for 10 rubles per day.
- 20 Mbit per second for 20 rubles per day.
Such tariff plans take into account Internet use only when transferring data of more than 5 MB per day and are paid using the “Pay later” system, and also provide the opportunity to access the Internet even with a negative balance.
Important! The provider states that access speed and volume calculations are calculated only based on outgoing traffic.
What is GPON technology?
Translated into Russian, the abbreviation GPON has the following form - gigabit passive optical network. From the name it is clear that MTS Internet GPON provides speeds of up to 1 Gbit/s, and transmission is carried out via “optics”. Despite the high upper figure, user equipment is not always designed for the declared parameter.
The advantage of MTS Internet over fiber is the provision of a group of services over one cable. The user connects to the fiber optic network and receives various options, which include telephony, connection to the global network and TV.
GPON technology involves replacing old copper cables with more efficient fiber optic wires that have better performance. Their peculiarity is the passage of a signal through a light pulse (in old wires an electric pulse is used). This feature guarantees signal reliability, high speed and minimal energy consumption.
The MTS Internet GPON cable is laid directly into the user’s apartment, and not to the whole building, as happened before. That is why, when connecting such a network, overloads, failures, access interruptions or other problems are excluded. After receiving the application, MTS fiber is installed to the client and an ONP modem is installed. With its help, all services are connected remotely, and the built-in Wi-Fi router allows you to connect to the Network wirelessly. The equipment is provided free of charge, which is a plus for potential clients, because with a normal connection such equipment is provided subject to payment of rent.
Today MTS is the only company in the Russian Federation offering GPON Internet connection. Its representatives say that technology not only keeps up with the times, but is ahead of it. Clients can receive high-quality Internet without interruptions, speed restrictions and other problems. An additional feature of GPON is 24 hours a day access to security alarms, video surveillance and other options. The capabilities of the network are such that its functionality will constantly expand.
Today, GPON is actively used in the UAE, Korea, Japan, the United States and many other European countries. This number also includes Russia, but little coverage is offered here for now. For example, in large cities the number of clients reaches hundreds of thousands, but this number is growing every day.
The principle of connecting the GPON Internet from MTS is very simple. The apartment comes with a fiber optic cable that connects directly to the ONT modem. Other equipment is connected to the latter, such as a security system controller, landline telephone, PLC adapter, TV set-top box, PC and other equipment.

Reviews about MGTS (MGTS)
I have been using the services of MGTS for home GPON Internet for about 10 years.
In general, for a long time. I always use the provided ZTE F660 equipment. I am a professional in the field of network technologies, so I apologize for some technological slang. What are the advantages: 1) Malfunctions are extremely rare, it works stably! 2) We gradually increased the access speed, from 200 to 500 Mbit/s, while maintaining the old, archived tariff! 3) IPv6, I noticed from the work of foreign sites, I was very pleased! About the disadvantages: 1) Since the new year, IPv6 has stopped working. He disappeared as suddenly as he had appeared before. And the meaning of 500 MBit/s is gone. What's the point if IPv4 is overloaded on the World Wide Web? Only work via IPv4 from MGTS? Also, the included VoWIFI/VoLTE roaming of the company, MTS (enabled dual stack IPv4/IPv6) stopped working. 2) I tried to figure out the IPv6 problem, but came across the disabled ability to configure the WAN interface. Now just watch. Sorry, I'm crying, why was my access denied? In the tech chat. support received an answer - We do not configure IPv6, period. 3) Legacy WiFi - 802.11N, only in the 2.4 MHz band and with a bandwidth of 20 MHz. 72 Mbit/s, quite sad. It is clear that I installed my own access point nearby and solved the problem with WiFi, but the company’s approach itself is frustrating. 4) There is no opportunity to use your own GPON equipment.
Summary: The advantages remain the stability of access and the archive tariff. Which is no small feat, and that’s why we’ve been together for 10 years. The disadvantages have become annoying. Therefore, if MGTS tries not to offend loyal customers and at least returns IPv6, it will do something about the quality of technical services. support, we will continue for another 10 years. It’s just that with this approach you’ll start losing clients, not to mention gaining new ones.
I have been a loyal MGTS customer for 9 years. When moving, I connected my home Internet to a new address. And then the surprises began... The Internet speed constantly jumped to minimum values. Streaming videos were constantly buffering. My mobile Internet and current provider do an excellent job of downloading streaming video - time has put everything in its place. I helped MGTS employees solve my problem within 1.5 months. In the end, my problem was not solved. I lost a lot of personal time, patiently communicating on the phone with those. support by sending screenshots of pings, screen recordings, hardware replacements, etc. After replacing the equipment, I made it clear that the problem was in the equipment that serves the house, but the technicians. support didn't take this into account. In the end, I got tired of all this and decided to refuse the services.
Now comes the fun part! To terminate the contract, you must come to the office in person. At the same time, the list of offices in which this is possible is very small and they are located on the outskirts of Moscow. At the same time, MGTS representatives claim on the RuNet that the contract can be terminated at any MGTS office. The SMS received with information about termination of the contract (including a list of offices for termination) did not mention the need to return the equipment. After calling back, an MGTS employee confirmed that there was no need to return the equipment. This confused me and, since I already had a mistrustful attitude towards MGTS, I asked a friend to call from a different number. As a result, this number received an SMS almost identical to mine, with the difference that it stated the need to return the equipment upon termination of the contract. The interval between messages is several hours. I do not rule out the human factor, because it is quite possible that the employee could have forgotten to mention the need to return the equipment, but in the case of automatic SMS, think and draw your own conclusions. Arriving at the office, I saw a full hall of people and waited for 1.5 hours. I terminated the contract and wrote an application for recalculation based on the requests created. By the way, recalculation is made only for those days during which the request was in open status. That is, you can be a new client and not realize for a month that the video is buffered due to the provider. And there is no compensation for this month. I can sing to you that this is your network card or PC. I was also surprised by the rudeness of the “managers for terminating the contract,” although there was no such thing on my part. So if you decide to terminate the contract, then the attitude towards you changes dramatically.
The icing on the cake. Fortunately, the recalculation was carried out successfully, but half a month later I received a payment without taking this recalculation into account. Of course, I called MGTS, showed them an official letter confirming the fact of recalculation, and in response I received something incomprehensible. According to my calculations, I owe MGTS about 75 rubles. They did not send me the payment taking into account the recalculation. That is, they do not have an official document reflecting the fact of my debt to MGTS and how much I specifically owe them - I don’t know. A month later I see a huge number of unknown numbers in spam. Google says these are debt collectors. I have no other debts. I have no idea how justified this method is for the sake of 75 rubles.
Internet plus TV
MTS, as a wired Internet provider, provides users with the opportunity to connect and combine packages. These are the so-called “Internet + TV” packages. When connecting to Internet service packages combined with TV, the user will pay on average 100 rubles more for a “pure Internet” tariff plan of equal speed.
The basic TV package includes 128 main TV channels (including 22 channels broadcast in HD quality). You can also additionally connect sets of additional TV channels of your own choice, also costing an average of 100 rubles per month.
Important! Viewing channels broadcast in HD quality is available only if the TV receiver is equipped with HD support or if there is a connected HD set-top box.
When connecting to the MTS provider via ADSL, you are given the opportunity to connect to a combined tariff with TV. The “basic” TV package includes 91 channels and costs an average of 150 rubles in additional monthly payment.

Equipment and principle of connecting a TV
The TV itself is directly connected via a set-top box. It receives the signal from the cable and processes it. Without a set-top box it is impossible to use home television. Luckily, it's now available for free rental for new customers.
