What is the normal Internet speed for a home?

Today, with the help of the Internet, we can communicate with family and friends, work remotely, and exchange information. To be able to quickly access the World Wide Web, you need to carefully choose your provider. Especially if you need to connect the Internet in a village. Providers promise their subscribers an excellent tariff plan for a small fee, but this is not always true. Users can independently check the connection speed, and if it turns out to be lower than stated in the contract, take certain measures.

What should Rostelecom's Internet speed be?

When concluding an agreement with a provider and choosing a tariff plan, first of all you should pay attention to the speed of your Internet connection. It is this characteristic that will determine whether you can watch your favorite movie, find the necessary information, or download an interesting game.

Connection speed is the time during which information is exchanged between your computer, laptop and other network servers. Speed is usually measured in megabits per second.

But it often turns out that the value specified in your contract does not correspond to the real numbers. Therefore, subscribers can test the Internet speed Speedtest Rostelecom and, if the data received differs from those specified, file a claim with their provider.

Experts note that the following network speed is considered normal for a home:

  • To check email, watch news, use social networks – 2 Mbit/s.
  • For video communications and online games – 5 Mbit/s.
  • For frequent downloading of large files, watching videos in Full-HD resolution is 10 Mbit/s.
  • To watch 4K video – 30 Mbit/s.

Consequences of poor connection

Most people use the Internet occasionally and will not die on the spot if it goes down for a while. However, there are situations where the consequences of an unstable network can be fatal. Let's describe some of them.

  1. Quarrel with an online interlocutor . If you were talking to someone and suddenly disappeared, this may be misunderstood and will bring additional difficulties in establishing communication.
  2. Breakdown of negotiations. Have you had important online negotiations (a job interview or the conclusion of a large contract)? There is no point in explaining the reason for the interrupted conversation - they simply will not listen to you.
  3. Missing an important webinar. Seven people don’t expect one thing, and even more so in a pre-announced lesson, so if your Internet speed drops, you won’t be able to acquire new knowledge.
  4. Inability to obtain the necessary information. Not everyone goes on the Internet with the desire to download a movie they like or surf on Facebook; for some, it really is a source of information that will instantly become inaccessible.
  5. Failure to complete work on time. If your Rostelecom Internet speed is low, do not take last-minute freelance orders so as not to let people down.
  6. Nervous tension. The Internet does not just disappear, but disappears suddenly (and appears just as suddenly), so you often have to “twitch” in vain and cut off the hotline number.
  7. Annoyance for wasted funds. If you cannot get quality services, then it becomes a pity to pay even small amounts of money.

The Internet with a poor connection makes you feel like you are on pins and needles, because you never know in advance when the connection will break and how it will end. Such a problem cannot be left to chance, but it is worth finding out the reason for the low-speed or unstable Internet and trying to eliminate it.

Ways to check Internet speed Rostelecom

If you notice that sites open slowly or movies take a long time to download, you should check your Internet speed. To do this, you should use special portals and services.

The most popular services are:

  • official verification from Rostelecom;
  • net;
  • ;
  • Speedof;
  • Yandex.Internetometer.

To start the verification process and measure the existing connection speed you need to:

  • Prepare your computer for testing.
  • Go to the service website to measure speed and open the page with parameters.
  • Use the special button to start the scan.
  • Wait a while.

After passing the test, you will learn the basic parameters of your Internet connection - incoming and outgoing speed and ping. It is by these indicators that you can evaluate the quality of your connection.

Where can I get a modem for such fast Internet?

GPON is a rare technology on a global scale, so it is extremely difficult to buy a compatible router in a store. I can say with 95% probability that your current GiPon router does not support .

MGTS understands this, and has been for a long time: the company is a pioneer in the implementation of GPON in Russia. For almost ten years, it has been working to improve interoperable modem technology with major equipment manufacturers (ZTE, Huawei, SERCOMM).

Okay, this is all great, but the result has not changed. You don't have a modem. It's not easy to buy. How does it work with other providers?

Every month you would pay several tens (or hundreds) of rubles above the tariff for “renting” equipment. And only after a couple of years it will be automatically purchased.

MGTS does things differently: it provides customers with free Wi-Fi routers - ONT optical modems designed for transmitting data over optical fiber and Wi-Fi, and also provides them with free installation, initial configuration and 24-hour technical support. There are no installment plans.

Do you use the Internet from MGTS? This means you don't have to pay for a modem. Stopped and want to disconnect? The equipment remains with the client in case of reconnection.

By the way, if MGTS gets a newer and better modem than yours (and this happens once every year or two), they will replace your old one with a new one for free. The technician's visit will be free.

Data value

After requesting a speed test, your home computer sends a batch of files to the server via the provider's line. After receiving them, the verification program sends them back. At the same time, the service notes the volume of these documents and the time during which they were received and sent back.

Incoming speed

This is the data rate at which your PC receives information from the network. Measured in megabits per second.

Outgoing speed

This is the data transfer rate at which your PC transfers information from the local drive to the network. It is also measured in megabits per second.

Ping

This is the time during which data is transferred through the network from the subscriber to the server and vice versa. Measured in milliseconds.

Test by downloading a test file

Using this method, you can check the real speed of downloading data from the Internet. Test files for verification can be found in Google or Yandex by searching for '10mb.bin', '100mb.bin', '1000mb.bin' or use this link: . Typically, file names correspond to their size, i.e. 10mb.bin - 10 MB, 100mb.bin - 100 MB, etc. When testing through a browser (Google Chrome, Opera, Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer, etc.), you should click on one of the links above and save the file. The file download process will begin. Let's look at the example of Google Chrome :

Speed factors and speed standards

There are such concepts as incoming (download) and outgoing (upload) Internet speed. But these indicators may differ for different users. And often when speed indicators change for the worse, customers rush to call support to find out why Rostelecom’s Internet speed has dropped. But before asking unnecessary questions, let’s figure out what factors greatly influence the quality of the Internet:

  • type of connection (ADSL, fiber, cable, DSL, wireless, etc.);
  • the power of the server and hardware of the provider whose services you use (if the equipment is weak, then you should not count on high speed performance);
  • settings of your equipment (if the router or modem is not configured properly, this can significantly affect your Internet);
  • load on servers when using the Internet;
  • problems at the provider's station;
  • the tariff you are using.

These are just a few of the things that affect your home internet. It is impossible to say exactly what speed is “normal”. For you, this is the speed that allows you to comfortably complete the current task that requires the Internet.

Remember that you cannot rely on the numbers “stated” by the provider. The speed indicators indicated in the tariff plans were obtained in “laboratory” conditions in the absence of negative factors. They are often very overpriced. Don't expect to get the same download or upload speeds on your computer at home. The actual speed will always be slightly lower than that indicated in the tariff plan.

Mobile apps for speed testing

Today, users have the opportunity to measure network speed on a tablet or smartphone

using the following applications:

  • net. It will quickly assess the quality of your Wi-Fi, speed and signal strength. With its help, you can record changes and highlight average Internet connection indicators.
  • Meteor (OpenSignal). It has a convenient and interesting website design. Works great for speed testing, but is not available in Russian.
  • Users are offered in two versions - for Android and iOS devices.

Download testing using the Download Master program

Let's look at an example of downloading files using the Download Master download manager.

Open the program and set the settings as in the picture:

Then copy these links to the clipboard [50MB] [100MB] [1000MB], the download should start automatically. You can run multiple files at the same time.

File download speed can be seen here:

PC programs

If you do not want to access various services to prevent a virus from getting onto your computer, you can install special programs that will help you test your Internet speed from your desktop.

Such programs include:

  • Networx.
  • LAN Speed Test by Totusoft.
  • BWMeter from Desksoft.

These programs can not only measure the speed of your Internet connection, but also contain a traffic counter for a certain period, and will also test the speed within the network and help you access important settings.

Providers with the highest speeds in Russian cities

If we compare the maximum Internet speed in Russia by city, it turns out that the top five are:

  1. Moscow;
  2. Chelyabinsk;
  3. Permian;
  4. Krasnoyarsk;
  5. Saint Petersburg.

That is, the largest cities and federal centers were among the leaders in terms of the level of fixed communications. Other subjects and autonomous okrugs are noticeably lagging behind.

What to do if the Rostelecom speed test shows a low result

If during testing you find that the result obtained is below average or very low,

necessary:

  • Check to see if there are currently any downloads on your computer or if there are programs running that could affect the network load.
  • Scan your PC for viruses and malware.
  • Make sure that no strangers are connecting to you through your router or other equipment.
  • Call the hotline or leave a request in your personal account.

If you contact the Rostelecom hotline, the operator will need to provide your personal data and subscriber agreement number.

Is the speed really 1 Gbps? Spoiler: yes!

I came to the MGTS testing center in the southwest of Moscow for an answer to this question. Here, the provider’s engineers test the compatibility of equipment from different manufacturers with GPON networks, as well as the operation of “branded” Wi-Fi routers with gadgets and computers.

Actually, the idea was the following: to make sure that 1 Gbit/s really exists, and is not invented for the sake of some “premium tariff”.

The easiest way to do this is to use a laptop with a gigabit Ethernet port and connect it directly to the MGTS modem.

So we took a simple Dell laptop. We connected via an Ethernet cable to a modem with GPON Internet from MGTS and...

Result: almost gigabit per second for download and upload . Proof screenshot above. You really don’t believe in this, when even in Moscow houses you most often cannot achieve 10 times lower speeds.

Exactly 1 Gbit/s interferes with receiving technical data exchanged between the modem and devices - this is a normal situation.

But there is one interesting detail.

When we agreed, we were warned: take with you the top-end laptop that you have. No question, I took the 15-inch MacBook Pro 2021, an excellent, powerful thing. Certainly better than 99% of Windows coffins. Yes?

No.
