Telephone number in international format: Ukraine and its telephone code

Ukraine, like any other state, has its own international telephone code, which must be indicated when entering the number when placing orders online on international trading platforms.
This is done so that, if the need arises, any interested person (seller, customs or post office employee) can contact the recipient of the shipment to promptly clarify certain circumstances. When placing international orders, the phone number must be entered in international format, that is, you must indicate the international telephone code of Ukraine: +380.

Next, we’ll talk about how the international format of a Ukrainian mobile number looks correctly, as well as how it should be entered and dialed.

Codes of mobile operators in Ukraine. Complete list of starting digits

The international mobile phone number format is a 12-digit combination that consists of several elements: country code, operator code and unique subscriber code. In Ukraine, the initial digits of any telephone number in the international format are “ +380 ” or “ 380 ”, which indicate that the SIM card was issued specifically on the territory of Ukraine.
In this article we will take a closer look at the next element of Ukrainian mobile numbers - operator codes.

Ukrainian mobile operator codes

Throughout the history of mobile communications in Ukraine, leading operators have undergone many changes: they have rebranded, merged with other companies, expanded, and more. This is why one mobile operator can have several codes at once. We will look at each of them.

Vodafone operator codes

Code (briefly)Code (full)Description
50 (050)+38050, 380 50This operator code has existed since UMC, which was later renamed MTS, and after that became Vodafone Ukraine.

97 (097)+38097, 380 97This is the Kyivstar operator code, under which two brands were actively promoted. The first was the virtual operator Djuice, which existed at that time, which became one of the tariff plans of Kyivstar and ceased to exist in 2013. The second is Ace&Base, a youth brand from Kyivstar, thanks to which mobile communications for subscribers of this operator have become available on a prepaid basis. It ceased to exist in 2006.
98 (098)+38098, 380 98The “newest” code of the Kyivstar operator, which was introduced by him in 2006. Initially, this number was also offered under this number, one of the sub-brands of Kyivstar, which was positioned as mobile communications for older people, but in 2009 this project was closed.

International telephone number format

We are used to writing down phone numbers starting with eight. Therefore, when somewhere you need to write down or enter a phone number in an international format on a website, you immediately have a lot of questions in your head.

We tell you in detail how to dial a phone number in international format, and where this format even came from.

Russian cell phone numbers in international format consist of three elements:

So, to write down a number in international format, you need to dial 11 digits, not counting the plus sign. This combination is used for calls from foreign countries to Russia; you can call within the country by dialing eight instead of +7. It is better to immediately save numbers in the international format in the contact book, because calls often do not go through through the number eight.

The Megafon number in the international format has the prefixes 920-929, 936 and 937. MTS numbers in the international format have the prefix 910-919, 980-989. Beeline numbers in international format can be easily recognized by the prefixes 903-909, 961-968, 976.

However, it is worth considering that numbers in one code can be divided by the regulator between several operators. This is due to the fact that the number resource is limited, and it is impossible to allocate codes with the required number of numbers to all operators, and there are more than a hundred of them registered.

Strictly speaking, any Russian cell numbers are immediately written in international format, since it is impossible to call them without a country code and operator code.

In international format you can dial any city (local) number. If you need to call, for example, a hotel abroad, you should dial 8-10---- the subscriber number from a landline phone. But from a cell number you need to dial instead of 8-10 - plus and the country code.

Recommendations

To avoid falling into the clutches of scammers, the user should under no circumstances call back unknown numbers. Also, you should not answer them if they raise suspicion. First you need to check the number through search engines like Google or Yandex. There are also special applications. More details about this process can be seen in the video.

If the user does not call and return calls to unknown numbers, then there is a high probability that he will avoid financial losses.

International number format for USA, Ukraine, Belarus

The number +7 determines whether the number belongs to the Russian telephone network. Other codes are reserved for other countries. An American cell number looks like this:

Each US state has its own prefix, but there is no link between a phone number and an operator in the US. There may be several variations of prefixes in one state.

For example, in New York, codes 347, 212 and 646 are used. At the same time, a subscriber with this number can move to any state; there is no roaming within the country, so these numbers can only be used to determine in which state the number was first located registered

Also, the numbers following +1 in an international American number allow you to determine whether the call is from a landline or cell phone. For example, 212 is the New York landline code (but not 100% of the time).

Each mobile operator in Ukraine, accordingly, has its own codes:

Although Kazakhstan has the same country code as Russia, their numbers are identified by a prefix: they have the format +7(6xx)xxx-xx-xx or +7(7xx)xxx-xx-xx. The prefixes of Russian mobile operators belong exclusively to the range (9xx).

Note that throughout the country there is also a numbering system with a code starting with eight. Just like in Russia, these are special multi-channel numbers. For example, 800 for free calls from any Kazakhstani number.

The theory of the appearance of the international number format

The dialing sequence is determined by the telephone numbering plan - a unified system that allows network users to send and receive calls, as well as identify the caller (number identification service is included in all tariff plans of cellular operators).

There are two numbering plans in the world: open and closed. With the first, local calls can be made without a national number (area code), and with the second, that is, closed, you must dial the full international format of the number for any type of call: local, long-distance, international.

Most countries use a closed numbering plan; Moscow has now completely switched to it. Note that the popular term “direct number” appeared before the closed plan was introduced. A “crooked” number, in fact, is not a number with an area code, but one that can be dialed directly without an area/operator code.

According to the plans of the Ministry of Communications and Communications, by 2021 Russia should completely switch to a closed numbering plan. This means that in cities it will not be possible to dial short 5-7 digit numbers for local calls, and it will always be necessary to use the full international number format.

Now we have a difference in the set of combinations for calls within the telephone zone, outside it and for long-distance calls.

If we talk about calls from landline phones, then to access long-distance calls you need to dial 8 (0 in other countries).

With a closed numbering plan, you will always need to dial the extended version, that is, with +7 and the area code.

Countries rarely change their numbering plan, but the Russians will have to do so in the near future. Most subscribers will not feel the difference, because it is convenient to immediately save the long version of the number in the smartphone phone book, only rare users of landline phones will always have to dial long numbers in the international format.

Brief historical excursion

The first words officially spoken through a telephone belonged to Alexander Graham Bell on March 10, 1876. Then there were no subscriber numbers yet, because there were only two devices in the world, which were located through the wall - in neighboring rooms. How much water has flowed under the bridge since then.

Telephone inventor Alexander Graham Bell (photo source: Greelane)

The first city-scale telephone networks appeared only a few years later. Each subscriber was assigned his own number, but it was not the users themselves who were responsible for dialing them, but specially trained telephone operators. It was their voices that were heard at the other end of the line - the network worker had to give the phone number, and the connection with a specific person occurred only after that. By 1910, about 7 million subscribers used the telephone network in the United States; in Russia at that time there were only about 150 thousand. However, even for us, the work of each telephone operator was really stressful.

“The central station is called by simply removing the microtelephone from the lever. The station attendant must respond with her number. The subscriber then clearly and distinctly communicates the number to which the connection is required.” (Memo from the “List of subscribers of the Moscow telephone network” for 1916)

In small towns, telephone numbers at the beginning of the last century were four-digit, in large towns - five-digit. If you needed to make a long-distance call, you had to tell the telephone operator not only the phone number, but also the city in which the specific subscriber was located. This call was ordered in advance.

Typical telephone operators of that time (photo source: TopRating)

Already in the first half of the last century, it became clear that the dialing system needed to be reformed as quickly as possible - this is how automatic telephone exchanges or automatic telephone exchanges appeared. They knew how to find subscribers on their own and did it much faster and more efficiently than telephone operators - it became clear that in the future they would all be left without work. Closer to the beginning of the First World War, the United States remained the most telephone-connected country in the world - there were about a hundred telephone exchanges there. In Germany their number was seven, and in Great Britain - two. In Russia, the first automatic telephone exchange appeared in the Kremlin in 1924, and the city automatic telephone exchange was launched in 1930.

Of course, at the start of the transition to PBX in domestic realities, telephone sets with dialers were very rare. Most still managed without them and were forced to dictate numbers to telephone operators, who made the connection manually.

Recruitment plan for 2009

On October 14, 2009, Ukraine switched to the standard dialing system adopted in the European Union.

For nationwide calls, dial 0 followed by the area code and local number. For example, to call Kyiv from Odessa, users dial 0 44 xxx xxxx. The same convention was adopted for mobile operators.

For local calls, users can still dial a local number without the 0 and area code. Mobile users must dial the full number with a 0 prefix, although operators may use local dialing in cities.

The within-country sequence for regular zones consists of a two-digit area code, an additional sub-area code (never used for the capital city of the geographic region corresponding to the telephone area), an additional placeholder (0 to 2 "2", used to ensure that the entire within-country sequence contains exactly 9 digits) and a local telephone number (5 to 7 digits). When dialing from a cell phone, the national dialing sequence (prefixed with 0 XX) is used even for phones from the same provider. Otherwise, the call may be placed in the nearest geographic area.

Cellular phone numbers can be assigned both within a cellular operator's area and within a geographic area. The latter scheme is used mainly for CDMA phones and for GSM operators selling connectivity within the same city, such as GoldenTelecom GSM. The allocation of new GSM cell phone numbers within a geographic area is now very rare because the law requires that all incoming calls be free, including incoming calls to a cell phone.

Some examples of typed sequences:

Some mobile operators may support additional dialing plans. For example, Kyivstar also supports:

Please note that the law specifically prohibits trunk calls to a PSTN phone in the same local area within a geographic telephone area (e.g. from Kyiv to Kyiv), so you cannot dial 0 for this

xx unless the telephone exchange is configured incorrectly or a special circumstance occurs.

The transition to a closed numbering plan, which will introduce seven-digit numbers for all zones, is due to be completed in 2011–2012.

Please note that when using older non-digital extensions for long distance, international, national mobile and SIP calls, you may need to wait for a continuous dial tone after the first 0. This applies to older rotary phones (as opposed to modern ones). telephones with digital dialing). For example, to call a Chernigov city number from Kyiv, you need to dial 0, wait for the dial tone, then dial 46 (Chernivtsi region code), and then dial a local number in that city. Similarly, when calling Vancouver, Canada, you dial 0, wait for the dial tone, dial another 0 to access an international line, then dial 1 (for Canada and the US), and then 778 (one of the area codes for the UK). Colombia) followed by a 7-digit local number.

Previous dial plan

Ukraine (like most countries of the former Soviet Union) used to have a four-tier (local, zonal, country, international) open enrollment plan. For all non-local numbers, the required trunk prefix was "8" followed by an additional dial tone (optional for digital PBXs), followed by "2" for intra-area calls, followed by the area code and "10 minutes" for international calls.
