However, a certain part of people, having received such a call, still make a test call to the phone of the person on behalf of whom the wiring is being done, and thus find out how things really are.

Now imagine that such a call will come from the phone of the person whose voice the scammers are imitating. How much does this increase the level of confidence? It increases it a lot, doesn’t it?

I have read more than once about various mechanisms for replacing numbers. Most often, there was a duplicate SIM card with the same number: physically this is quite possible, another thing is that getting such a SIM card is very, very difficult and it, of course, refers to one and only one number.

Some time ago I began to come across articles about universal SIM cards that allow you to simulate a call from any phone number. Here, for example, is an article on Habré “HackedSim. A call from any number - fiction or reality?”, which examines the purely technical features of implementing such a card and explains why substitution is possible and why operators allow this.

However, further study of the situation showed that at the moment there is no longer a need for any complex and expensive tricks. Type “phone number spoofing” in Google or Yandex - and you will receive thousands of links to a wide variety of services (usually the SIP Internet telephony protocol is used there), which allow, for example, to make a phone call from a browser, substituting a completely arbitrary phone number for the called party .

But there are even easier ways! For example, go to iTunes and type “Changing number” or in Russian “Number substitution”. You will immediately receive a link, for example, to this program and a couple of dozen analogues. Note, this is iTunes! Not some Darknet! Completely legally hosted utilities.

What does this program do? I quote the announcement.

The program is free, but it allows you to make calls with number substitution only for money - there is a paid subscription, or you need to purchase so-called credits to top up your account. Experimenting with this program cost me only 70 rubles, but I had to make a paid subscription with three free days. This subscription can be canceled at any time, which is what I did when I was convinced of everything myself.

So here it is. This all works beautifully, and it’s completely elementary: as the initial number you enter any desired one or select a contact from the phone book, as a subscriber number - enter the subscriber’s number or select from the phone book.

The subscriber will see exactly the number (and the contact name as it is written in his phone book) that you entered - and, accordingly, he will be fully confident that his wife, son, mother, father, grandmother, representative is calling him bank - the number that you simply substituted for yours. Plus - the conversation can be recorded, and you can also use this program so that your number is not identified to the subscriber.

This works with any numbers from different countries. The screenshot above is a UK number for one of my Drimsim cards, the call goes to a Spanish number that I use for smartphone tests. On the Spanish number, when I received an incoming call, the British number was clearly displayed, although I was calling from another Spanish number.

We experimented all evening yesterday in a company in which there were people with Russian, Ukrainian, Spanish and American numbers - any numbers were entered quite clearly. It all works.

I also tried a couple of SIP services where you need to make calls through a browser, this also works. (Actually, similar programs use the same SIP protocol.)

Do you understand what scope such services and programs open up for practical jokes, scams and money scams? You can come up with a whole bunch of scenarios. When you receive a call supposedly from your son’s phone and a stranger informs you that the child is in trouble and you need to urgently arrive somewhere with a certain amount of money - you (and I), most likely, will immediately rush to rescue a little blood without asking any questions, right? Or a call from his father’s phone, who allegedly crashed into the Mercedes of some authority? Or thieves have their eye on your apartment-house to rob and want to be sure to lure you out for an hour, for which they simply arrange a call supposedly from the phone of your children or your parents? Or will they allegedly call some security service from your number and report a bomb? It actually makes your hair stand on end when you realize how many setups can be made in such a simple and accessible way!

But, in fact, I am writing about all this, because forewarned is forearmed. And what you need to clearly know and understand here.

1. The main and only way to check is to hang up and immediately call back to the specified number. Because if someone calls you supposedly from a child’s phone, then when you call back you will obviously end up on the child’s phone, and not on the phone of the person who called you. And even if the child does not pick up the phone, and, for example, the phone is out of reach, this is immediately a 100% sign of a setup.

2. You will not be able to find out the phone number of the person who called you and substituted the number. At least for now I haven't found any easy ways to do this. However, the fact of number substitution and the original number can be found out at the request of law enforcement agencies. By the way, even if the real number can be found out, for example, from the account details, this will not give you much - there are still a lot of “left” SIM cards.

3. Number substitution can only be done when calling; SMS from someone else’s number cannot be faked in this way, as far as I understand. But there are other ways in which SMS can also be sent from an arbitrary number.

That's it. You should know and understand this, you should tell your relatives and friends about it (especially older relatives, who are easiest for scammers to scam).

You cannot reliably find out who is calling you and from what phone number, because faking someone else’s number is absolutely elementary. In accordance with this, you should act when you receive any strange calls allegedly from the numbers of your relatives and friends. Immediately reset and call back - that's the only way.
