The technology used in routers when connecting to Rostelecom is called ADSL - Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line. Translated from English as “asynchronous digital subscriber line”. It uses a telephone line to transmit a digital signal.

Although the principle of operation of the system components is quite simple, to monitor the stability of operation, corresponding LED indicators were added to the components. Their detailed designation:
- PWR is a classic power indicator, which is also responsible for indicating the power saving mode and synchronization status. In a stable state, the sensor lights up green. When flickering, it is in one of the two above states. If the indicator is off, the device is in an inactive state;
- PLC – status of data transfer between network components. Green color – speed above Mbit/second, orange – data transfer speed from 20 Mbit/s to 80 Mbit/s, red indicator color – speed below 20 Mbit/s, which indicates the need to perform diagnostics;
- ETH – availability of Ethernet cable connection. If the light is solid, you are connected to the network but no data is being transferred. If the sensor blinks, the system is working correctly, and data packets are successfully transmitted. If the indicator is inactive, there are problems with the cable connection.
What is a Powerline network?
Powerline is essentially a type of wired network. We can assume that the apartment has a broadband Powerline adapter located in the hallway and a smart TV in the living room that does not support wireless communication. In such a situation, you can connect digital television only using an Ethernet cable, which will need to be run along the floor of the living room from the corridor. PLC technology appeared back in 1920. The first PLC adapter supported speeds of up to 14 Mbit/s; modern PLC adapters support speeds of up to 500 Mbit/s. Nowadays, plc adapters are produced by almost every company that produces network equipment.

Setting up a plc adapter
- Connect the plc adapter to the router using a lan cable and turn on the plc to a 220 V network
- Connect the second plc adapter to a 220 V network
- On the first plc you need to press and hold the “ Security ” button or, if there is no such button, the “ Config ” button for 15 seconds.
- Repeat the same with the second plc
- We reset the adapters settings

Causes of failures and ways to resolve them

Possible problems in the operation of plc adapters and their solutions
1. Internet access or IPTV service does not work.
A possible problem is that the device has entered energy saving mode. Check that all three indicators are lit on all PLC adapters. A possible problem is that the devices have not created a PLC network with each other. Check that the PLC connection indicator (PLC/ACT) is lit on the PLC adapters. If the PLC connection indicator (PLC/ACT) is not lit, go to Configuration of two or more PLC devices. 2. Problem with Internet connection speed.

3. Data transfer speed is not symmetrical.
A PLC connection is not inherently septenary, and therefore translation from point A to B and vice versa gives different results. This may be because there is more noise on one side than on the other side.
4. When plugged into the outlet, the Power (PWR) indicator lights up red.
If for some reason your PLC adapter stops working, but when connected to the network the Power (PWR) indicator lights up red, this means that this PLC adapter does not have firmware. If you already have one PLC network consisting of two devices and you need to connect a third, then you need to do the following:
Configuration 2 PLC + 1 PLC
1. Both devices are connected and three indicators are on on both; 2. Press the “SECURITY” button on the side panel of the main PLC adapter* and hold it for 4-6 seconds, then release the button. The Power (PWR) indicator should start flashing; 3. Insert the third PLC adapter and hold the “SECURITY” button on the side panel of the device for 3-5 seconds, then release the button. All three lights should light up; 4. If you have four or more PLC adapters that need to be combined into one PLC network, then follow steps 2 and 3.
Important : do not remove the main PLC adapter from the network when creating a single PLC network. * - the main PLC adapter is the adapter on which all other PLC devices are connected. This adapter does not enter the power saving mode state. If you have two PLC adapters that already have one PLC network, then the main PLC adapter is considered to be the one that was first connected to the socket.

However, if the installation is carried out in an apartment and neighbors use similar technology, then we perform the following manipulations:
- insert the adapter into the socket and connect the network cable;
- press the “Config” or “Security” button for 15 seconds, release, the device will restart;
- to set new settings, click “Config” again until “Power” starts flashing;
- We configure the second device using an identical method.
If everything is done correctly, synchronization will occur and an indication will be displayed that the network is functioning.

Media Bridge Mode
Only in the process of writing this article, on the more expensive Asus RT-N18U model, I discovered the Media Bridge operating mode, which suits us much better than the amplifier mode (even if you look at the operating diagram in the control panel).
But the Asus RT-N12+ does not have this operating mode. Which is logical in principle, since it is not very suitable for serious multimedia tasks. In the near future I will prepare separate instructions for setting up the Media Bridge mode. I'll check everything and write how it fits or not.
