What is a Rostelecom optical terminal? GPON technology from Rostelecom. The principle of connecting to Rostelecom

Good day to all! Today in this article we will briefly talk about Rostelecom optical terminals. At the moment there are 6 models of devices: RT-GM-1, RT-GM-2, RT-GM-3, RT-GM-4, Eltex NTU-RG-1421G-Wac and Eltex NTU-RG-1421G-WZ. In general, they are all approximately the same, but there are some features that we will talk about in the article.

I want to say right away that they all work on data transmission technology via xPON optical cable. The speed is much higher than when using twisted pair. Most users also have a fiber-optic connection at home. But then an individual user is connected to each apartment via twisted pair cable. In this case, optics are suitable for each apartment.

In Tory, this reduces interference, chances of packet loss, and also increases speed. If with a normal connection the maximum speed at Rostelecom is 100 Megabits per second. When connected in this way, the speed can increase to 300 Mbit. On the other hand, whether such speed is needed is something everyone decides for themselves. Next, I will briefly talk about the presented devices. If you have any questions, write them in the comments and I will answer you.

Connecting to Rostelecom via GPON

GPON is Rostelecom’s most promising Internet connection technology. According to this standard, data reception speeds can be up to 2.5 Gb/s, and data transmission is carried out at speeds up to 1.25 Gb/s. Unfortunately, the provider significantly limits the bandwidth of the channel. The maximum access speed via GPON in different cities is indicated in the tariffs on the company’s website.

When using this connection method, optical fiber is laid into the subscriber's apartment or house. Direct connection to a computer is not possible; a user terminal is required to convert the light flux into digital data. This device is provided by the provider, so the user does not incur additional costs for purchasing equipment.

Note! During the connection, the Rostelecom master configures the GPON terminal for free.

Which routers are suitable for connecting to this technology?

To connect to fiber optic networks, you need special optical terminals or gigabit routers. In them, the Internet speed can be up to 300 Mbit/sec, while over an ordinary twisted pair cable it does not exceed 100 Mbit. It often happens that a residential building is connected to the network via fiber optic, but the connection to a specific apartment is made through a regular copper cable. The optical terminal allows you to connect directly to the optical fiber.

At the moment, Rostelecom provides 6 models of optical terminals:

  • RT-GM-1;
  • RT-GM-2;
  • RT-GM-3;
  • RT-GM-4;
  • Eltex NTU-RG-1421G-Wac;
  • Eltex NTU-RG-1421G-WZ.

You can purchase another device other than those provided by your provider, but it must support gigabit connectivity.

Setting up a connection when using FTTB (Ethernet)

If your address does not have the technical ability to use GPON, FTTB technology can be used. In this case, communication is also carried out through optical fiber, but it is carried out only to the distribution box in the apartment building. A regular network cable (twisted pair) is installed in individual apartments.

This method allows you to directly connect to the Internet any device with an Ethernet connector. A more common connection scheme involves the presence of a Wi-Fi router. As with the GPON terminal, you can rent it from your provider. The router connects to a cable from the Internet provider and distributes the Internet to all home devices. To configure the router and set Wi-Fi parameters, the web interface is used. The router's IP address, login and password are usually indicated on a sticker located on the bottom side of the device.

Important! You can choose any compatible router to connect to Rostelecom. The company has no restrictions on client equipment.

The LOS or ALARM indicator is red on the router

Those lucky ones who are connected to the Internet via optical fiber using PON or GPON technology use an optical terminal as an access device - it is also sometimes called an optical modem. It has special indicators - LOS, Alarm and PON. They display the current status of the Internet connection. During normal operation of the terminal, the PON lights up green, which means the connection with the provider is active and there is access to the Internet. The LOS light is completely inactive. But what to do if we see a picture like this?!

Red LOS on the router means loss of optical signal. That is, it cannot connect to the station module. Most often, the reason is damage to the optical cable outside your apartment. And only a call to technical support can help here.

Sometimes, if you have previously rearranged or moved your ONT terminal, the reason why the LOS light comes on may be an optical cord coming out of its port. This is a thin yellow cable at the end with a green or blue square connector. Here he is:

There is no need to pull it out - just try to stick it in, as it were. The plug should fit tightly and not dangle in the connector. If he moves away, he will return to his place after that. If not, then this is not the reason and you will still have to call the provider.

If the LOS turns red after you pull the cable out of the terminal, then dust may have gotten on it. Try wiping the end of the cord with an alcohol injectable wipe. Do not look into the connector under any circumstances - you can damage the retina of your eye! Did not help? Then most likely you damaged the plug itself. It will not be possible to repair or replace it without a special tool and therefore you will have to call a mechanic.

Why is the PON light red?!

On some models of ONT terminals, the manufacturer, for some reason known only to him, does not make a separate LOS or Alarm indicator, but gives the PON indicator several functions at once. A striking example is Eltex routers from Rostelecom.

Here, when problems occur on the optical line, the PON light turns red, which can sometimes put the user into a slight stupor. The sequence of actions is the same as in the case of LOS - you need to check whether the optical cable is well connected to the WAN connector. You can try to disconnect it and connect it again. Next, walk along the entire length of the cable in the apartment and check for damage. After this, you can safely call the provider and leave a request.

How to connect ADSL from Rostelecom

In small towns and cities, the only available connection technology is often ADSL. This outdated protocol provides information transfer at speeds of up to 24 Mbit/s, communication is carried out through a telephone cable. It connects to a modem or ADSL router, through which home network devices access the Internet.

Modern technologies are developing so rapidly that sometimes even just keeping track of all the changes turns out to be incredibly difficult. But you cannot lag behind existing trends, since it will be incredibly difficult to catch up with competitors who have taken advantage of new products. The largest Russian telecommunications company understands this very well, which is why they try to offer the highest quality services and modern options. But it’s not just providers who should follow the trends. Clients should also know the main features and advantages of Rostelecom's GPON technology. What is it, what benefits does it bring and is it worth joining the new offer - all of the listed questions that have become relevant in 2021 should receive accurate and correct answers. Only in this way will all parties to the agreement be able to use all the positive aspects of the new product and not deny themselves the pleasure of using high-quality, reliable Internet and communications.

What is GPON technology

Those who want to understand what GPON technology from Rostelecom is, you need to know that this innovation is a special communication line that uses optical fiber instead of the usual copper cable. This approach allows you to significantly increase the speed of information transfer and the volume of Internet traffic. As a result, instead of the usual 100-200 Mbit/s, users will be able to receive gigabits of traffic per second. Even the name itself speaks to this: the letter G in the abbreviation indicates precisely the fact that the updated speed is calculated in gigabits.

Another advantage that affects the quality of the connection is the complete absence of additional distribution points. All available traffic goes to customers directly from the provider, bypassing unnecessary intermediaries and additional devices, the use of which involuntarily reduced the connection speed and the quality of the services provided by the company.

Connection to GPON from Rostelecom

Those wishing to use high-speed Internet should remember that in general the connection procedure remains unchanged and consists of concluding an agreement with the provider. The rest will be done by the telecommunications company's employees. Choosing Rostelecom equipment that supports GPON will not cause any difficulties. Company managers will definitely explain which devices to give preference to. In this case, the final option depends on what services the client connects.

If we focus on the most important nuances of connection, it is worth highlighting the following details:

  • the optimal location for the router or receiver will be the hallway;
  • the length of the cable located in open areas in the apartment should be minimal;
  • There should be a socket near the installation site of the device.

That is, users will not have to face difficulties and impossible conditions.

How much does it cost to install Rostelecom Internet in a private home?

Rostelecom high-speed Internet connection to apartments occurs in accordance with the official plan for replacing outdated equipment with modern equipment. xPON technology becomes available to residents of the entire house, street and even district, as the operator runs a full-fledged network or rents an existing channel. You don't have to pay for cable and equipment - it's already included in the monthly subscription fee. The situation with private houses looks different: the network is not planned for them.

Private houses require separate cabling - which can be expensive. Cable charges are calculated according to the distance from the nearest connection point to your home. If you live in a remote place, Rostelecom satellite Internet in a private home will become an analogue of a wired connection.

This solution should be connected only if there is no other alternative, since:

  • the cost of maintenance is higher than all existing analogues;
  • expensive tariff plans;
  • low data exchange speed;
  • high latency;
  • Unstable operation in bad weather conditions.

The main advantage of satellite Internet is the ability to connect to remote locations. The wireless Internet offered by Rostelecom to a private home has a choice of tariff plans, which allows you to choose the optimal solution.

Equipment setup

Setting up GPON Rostelecom will not cause any serious difficulties. Considering the fact that only the line itself is subject to change, and other connection nuances remain unchanged, setting the necessary parameters of the equipment used will not change. But, if the subscriber encounters unforeseen difficulties, he can at any time contact support operators, who will definitely tell you how to deal with the current situation and cope with the difficulty that has arisen.

All of the above brings to the fore not the configuration of the equipment, but the correct choice of the console. Subscribers should decide in advance:

  • what tariffs and service packages will be connected (television, Internet, home telephone);
  • how the equipment will be connected to the network (cable or wi-fi);
  • Additionally, you need to make sure that the device is capable of receiving a signal from optics.

If you take into account all of the above, there will definitely not be any problems.

Services and packages

Connecting a new technology does not in any way affect the offers available for activation. Subscribers can choose any of the available television packages or tariffs for access to the World Wide Web. The managers and specialists of the company making the connection will also report this.

At the same time, so that replacing old equipment with optical fiber does not turn out to be pointless, it is necessary to think in advance about how justified such actions will be. The main effect of such a replacement should be increased speed. If there is no urgent need for it, then there is no point in switching to a new, modern cable.

An exception that may force users to think about replacement may be the number of connected services. The more packets a client uses, the higher the wiring bandwidth requirements.

Pros and cons of GPON technology

The most accessible source of information about the positive and negative aspects of the new Rostelecom GPON technology is reviews. But when reading comments from people who have already experienced a connection using optical fiber, you must remember that their opinion is not always objective. Therefore, when making decisions about switching to optics, you should consider the following advantages:

  • higher connection speed and high throughput;
  • absence of additional terminals and devices that reduce the quality of communication;
  • no interference from electromagnetic radiation and greater resistance to moisture, since the optics do not use electricity.

One of the disadvantages is the fragility of optical fiber. It is difficult to bend and incredibly difficult to repair. Therefore, if the line is damaged, restoration will require time, during which it will be impossible to watch TV or go online. Fragility also causes the need to reduce the length of the cable located in the apartment. The smaller it is, the lower the likelihood of damage.

About GPON technology

GPON is a broadband multi-service access network where Internet, telephony and television services are provided over a single cable with guaranteed quality of service. GPON

This is your personal fiber optic channel with a capacity of up to 1 Gb/sec.

GPON is a real revolution in telecommunications!

The technology is actively developing all over the world, and the number of subscribers, including in Russia, is growing at a rapid pace. Fiber optic cable is laid into the apartment, which guarantees the highest quality of services and stable speeds.

MTS company merged with MGTS company,

so that Moscow residents can appreciate the most advanced technologies in the field of communications. MTS is the only telecommunications company that offers its subscribers home Internet and Digital TV services with a connection to GPON networks from MGTS.

Equipment

The ONT modem required for connection is installed in the user’s apartment, which allows you to connect additional services remotely. The modem already has built-in Wi-Fi. ONT connection and the equipment itself are completely free for users.

How does GPON work?

Providing Internet access using GPON technology involves replacing outdated copper cables with more advanced fiber optic cables with significantly greater bandwidth. The signal travels through such a cable through a light rather than an electrical impulse. The light pulse travels along the glass fiber, providing a more reliable signal and high speed with low energy consumption.

GPON technology involves laying a fiber-optic cable directly to the subscriber’s apartment, and not to the entire building, which guarantees constant Internet access speed and eliminates operational failures due to network overload. To connect to GPON technology, a modem is installed free of charge for the subscriber - ONT (Optical Network Terminal), thanks to which all services are subsequently connected remotely and in one device. The modem has built-in Wi-Fi, which allows you to work wirelessly from any device.

Development prospects

Today we can confidently say that GPON technology not only keeps up with the times, but is also in many ways ahead of it, expanding the boundaries of what is possible. The new speed standard will allow us to constantly expand the package of services provided. Video surveillance, telemetry, security alarms and other services using GPON technology become available to subscribers. Technology resources allow us to talk about the prospects for the development and implementation of many other services for a better quality of life.

GPON in Russia and in the world

GPON is rapidly developing in the USA, Japan, Korea, UAE and a number of European countries as the most promising access technology.

Russia still lags behind in terms of percentage coverage, but the dynamics of development correspond to global trends. In large Russian cities, such as Chelyabinsk, Miass and others, the number of subscribers amounts to tens of thousands, and in St. Petersburg - hundreds of thousands of people.

To plug

This is due to the requirements of new applications that can only fully function with a PON connection from Rostelecom. That is why it was necessary to introduce fiber optic technologies that meet the requirements of high-speed Internet.

This article consists of several points:

  • What is PON technology
  • Features of PON Internet
  • Connection equipment
  • Setting up modems

Connection technology

The process of connecting high-speed Internet using xPON technology requires the installation of additional equipment, which is issued by the operator. This type of connection can ensure not only stable operation of the Internet connection, but also digital and interactive television. High data exchange speed allows you to comfortably broadcast television channels in 4K quality.

Satellite Internet requires a special satellite dish that will receive and transmit data. The decoder connects directly to the modem, which is connected to a computer or laptop.

Modern technologies have contributed to lower prices for such components, which makes satellite Internet more accessible to customers.

Follow the promotions and updates to the line of tariff plans of the telecommunications operator Rostelecom. New offers will not only have a positive impact on the quality of service, but will also help you save money.

PON technology from Rostelecom

The most important advantage of this technology compared to other types of connections is high data transfer and, as a result, responsiveness of networks. Therefore, a PON connection is optimal for connecting large companies to the Internet.

Currently, Internet speed requirements reach 100 Mbps, and in the near future they will approach 1 Gbps. Only optical cables can support such high performance. This is especially true for large distances, which, of course, exist between the provider and the user.

FTTH (Fiber to the Home) bandwidth is already available to service providers and is routed to the home. Thus, new buildings will serve as the basis of access networks and will be able to function for many years. Constructing FTTH access networks is far from a cheap process, which requires not only labor-intensive construction work, but also significant financial costs.

However, the development of wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology, which uses a single fiber for incoming and outgoing traffic, has greatly improved the situation. The first of the FTTH networks have already moved to a newer standard, where a single fiber is connected to a passive optical splitter, which in turn distributes the signal to several subscribers.

It was this standard that came to be called PON technology, which Rostelecom is now actively using. Thanks to this technology, the network can support a signal splitting ratio of 1:64 from a single fiber. In addition, Rostelecom PON technologies allow subscribers to use them without using IP set-top boxes.

Advantages of the Internet using PON technology from Rostelecom

The most significant advantage of PON Internet from Rostelecom is that, with the help of inexpensive optical splitters, a common optical fiber provides a network for many users. But remember that such splitters keep the network responsive for up to 64 users. Thus, this technology is of interest not only to subscribers, but also to service providers who want to replace somewhat outdated copper networks.

Features of PON networks, which can also be called advantages, are:

  • absence of electromagnetic interference, since there is no need to use active equipment directly in the access network;
  • reduction of fiber and equipment in the central office.

PON equipment from Rostelecom provides greater throughput and supports a double distribution coefficient. This means that with a 64-lane allocation, each user will receive a fairly large connection throughput, about 35 Mbps. If the provider uses lower distribution factors, for example, 16 or 32, subscribers will receive even more bandwidth. Thanks to the efficient use of PON standard bandwidth, subscribers are provided with high data transfer speeds. In addition, this technology makes it possible to use not only high-speed Internet, but also multiservice services, such as video, voice, and data.

Which modems are suitable for connecting PON from Rostelecom

GPON technology is an industry-wide interchangeable standard. This indicates that PON modems from any manufacturer will work correctly with devices such as ONT.

This, in turn, reduces the cost of equipment and enables providers to offer subscribers the most favorable tariffs for services. It is also important to note that the updated technology based on XGPON standards increases network performance up to 10 Gbit, while maintaining backward compatibility with already deployed networks.

How to set up equipment

As a rule, PON equipment from Rostelecom does not require careful configuration, since all the necessary parameters have already been entered by the provider. But in some Wi-Fi router models with PON technology, you will need to configure wireless network configurations and set connection parameters. These parameters include the PPPoE type user login and password, which Rostelecom provides to the subscriber when concluding an agreement.

If, after correctly entering all the necessary parameters, the PON indicator on the equipment lights up red, we recommend that you contact Rostelecom customer technical support with this problem.

If you still have questions about this technology, we recommend watching this video.

GPON equipment Rostelecom

There is no need to buy specialized equipment. You can directly connect the cable to your computer and use the Internet. This fact is one of the advantages of GPON.

In what cases is a router needed?

  1. Your laptop does not have RJ-45. Many manufacturers have stopped installing this port because they want to achieve a minimum thickness of the device.
  2. You want to use a wireless network.
  3. You need to connect several devices to the Internet at once.

A Rostelecom GPON router can be purchased not only from the provider, but also in any hardware store. There are many models on the market in different price categories. You will definitely find the right device.

You can view the equipment from the provider on the page https://rt.ru/homeinternet/device_inet. The cost of routers starts from 2100 rubles, it depends on the characteristics of the model.

Rostelecom and PON technology in Vologda video

PJSC Rostelecom owns the largest telecommunications network in the Russian Federation. Over the past decade, great progress has been made in increasing Internet speeds for a wide range of users thanks to the introduction of GPON technology from Rostelecom.

XPON is a set of technologies for broadband multidirectional access using fiber optic cables. Passive optical network (PON - Passive optical network) involves distribution not only at the level of trunk channels, but also for individual connections.

The capabilities of fiber optics are much greater than those of older copper cable networks. And in support of this the following arguments can be given:

  1. Wavelength division (WDM) technology allows digital data transmission and download speeds of up to 100 Mbit/s or more, which is an order of magnitude higher than what can be achieved with ADSL Internet connection technology.
  2. The technical properties of fiber optic cable make it possible to provide a stable and high-quality signal over long distances between the provider and the end consumer.
  3. The user is provided with a full resource of fiber optic wire, which can be distributed to all home devices that receive an Internet signal, thereby receiving a range of digital services: telephone communications, Internet, television.
  4. Optical fiber is wear-resistant and not so susceptible to external factors: it will not rust, and weather conditions do not affect it. The cable is safe and it is impossible to get an electric shock from it.

The letter "G" (Gigabyte) added to the acronym PON represents the internet signal speed that the technology is oriented towards. The passive nature of the network is that there is no active network amplifying equipment between the signal source (provider) and the end user. The PON connection scheme is as follows: optics are installed up to the entrance, and twisted pair cables of up to 100 Mbit per port are distributed from the entrance to the apartments.

Technology advantages and possible speeds

There is no need to even say that the fiber-optic Internet provider Rostelecom has simply “outstanding” speed indicators - it’s hard to believe, but 1 Gbit/second is far from the limit. As for other advantages of “optics”, the following deserves special attention:

  • Installing fiber optic lines is much simpler, which installers have already appreciated - unlike old cables, the fiber optic in the apartment is no thicker than the refill of a ballpoint pen, and the cable is secured with self-adhesive clips that do not spoil the appearance of the room and can be easily removed if necessary.

Remember! Despite the elasticity and strength, experts do not recommend bending at an angle of 90°, and this can be considered one of the disadvantages of the system. In the corners, a bend with a radius of 25-50 millimeters is allowed.

  • The fiber optic cable has a high degree of electrical safety; there is a risk of being harmed by laser radiation, but this can be avoided by not looking into the optical socket connector.
  • A GPON modem from Rostelecom is also a good energy saver, since the device is powered by a 12-volt element, and light costs are about 30 rubles. per month.
  • Versatility, since now you can enjoy high-quality digital fiber-optic television, use the Internet and Rostelecom telephone, and at the same time the apartment will not be cluttered with numerous cables and sockets.

Unfortunately, there is no eternal equipment and impeccable technology, and no one is immune from problems with fiber optic lines. The first thing you should pay attention to if the signal is lost is the terminal connection. Try connecting the cable directly, and if there is no power, contact a specialist. You can find out about the reasons for the shutdown and how to solve any problem from the technical service. To facilitate the resolution of many technical issues and to receive timely information support, Rostelecom specialists suggest creating a personal account on the service provider’s website. There you can find out the availability of funds in your account, change the tariff and pay for services.

What equipment is needed to connect GPON

To connect, you need to leave a request on the company’s website or contact the customer service center. It is necessary to purchase a GPON terminal (router, modem), a device that will convert the fiber optic interface into an Ethernet interface. The Rostelecom company provides its users with several options for terminals that can be purchased on a rental basis or purchased. The client is given the opportunity to choose an ONT optical terminal depending on the intended functionality.

One of the most optimal options is GPON ONT RFT620. This model has a number of advantages:

  • ability to connect up to 4 devices to the LAN;
  • unlimited number of Wi-Fi connections;
  • availability of access to watch streaming television;
  • Possibility of connecting up to 2 landline phones.

It is necessary to provide a place where the terminal will be located and a source of electricity to provide power. When determining the location of the cable entry into the room, it is worth considering that it is very sensitive to bending, so it is not recommended to stretch it into distant rooms; it should be placed as close to the entrance as possible.

Is it possible to connect GPON yourself?

Only the provider can install a fiber optic cable to the user using its installers. If there is no network at a reasonable distance from the intended connection location, it is not possible to make it yourself. The client needs to submit an application, and as soon as the network extends to his location, the operator will contact him and offer his services.

It is possible to connect an ONT modem purchased by the client independently. But in this case, it is important that the device meets the technology requirements. In addition, if the user purchases or leases equipment from the Rostelecom operator, then there is no charge for connection and initial setup. Otherwise, these services will have to be paid for.

Having connected the GPON cable and the computer via the LAN connector, you need to turn on the equipment and access its settings. To do this, open a browser and indicate the IP terminal address in the address bar. GPON ONT RFT620 from Rostelecom uses the IP address 192.168.1.254 to enter the default settings.

After entering your login and password, which initially have the same form - user - you will be taken to the device settings page. The Internet settings on this model are already predefined by the provider and do not need to be changed. The next step is setting up your home network:

  • activate the Wi-Fi wireless module;
  • adjust security features;
  • set static and connect dynamic IP addresses.

Configuring GPON ONT registration and bandwidth control.

GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Network) technology is increasingly finding its application in the networks of providers of the Russian telecommunications services market. However, not all manufacturers' equipment meets the requirements of this fast-growing market and takes into account all the subtleties of setting the bandwidth in a passive optical network.

In this article, we will try to delve into the process of setting up the basic functionality that allows us to provide basic high-speed network access services via the GPON network.

GPON is a full-fledged network built on passive optical elements all the way from provider to subscriber.

On the provider's side, an OLT (Optical Line Terminal) is installed - an L2 switch with all the usual functionality, having Uplink ports (for connecting to the main network) and Downlink ports (for connecting clients). OLT Calix E7-2 with two GPON-8 cards, for example, has 4 optical 10-gigabit Uplink ports, 8 optical gigabit Uplink ports and 16 “gigabit” Downlink PON ports. OLT is managed both through the terminal port and using the SNMP, SSH, TELNET protocols, as well as Web GUI via HTTPS.

On the client side, an ONU (Optical Network Unit) is installed, which is also sometimes called ONT (Optical Network Terminal) - a full-fledged small-sized switch. Various ONUs from Calix have a wide selection of ports: Ethernet, VoIP, RF, WiFi. ONU management occurs directly from the OLT, allowing the operator to fully control the quality of service provision and prevent problems on the subscriber side.

A passive optical network is built between the subscriber and the provider, which often has a tree topology. The main components of such a network are optical fiber and splitters (Splitter - separator), which allow you to “branch” traffic in the provider-client direction and “mix” traffic in the opposite direction. The advantage of passive equipment is its independence from power supply and ease of operation.

Let us now skip the process of laying optical fiber and connecting OLT and ONT to it and look at the process of connecting a subscriber from a technical point of view.

Once the ONT is connected to the optical fiber and power is connected, the process of registering the ONT with the OLT begins. ITU-T G.984 standards define the main components of this process:

  • 8-digit FSAN code
  • Manufacturer ID

Registration ID:

  • From 1 to 10 characters
  • Exchange with OLT in encrypted mode
  • Programmable

<>

Serial Number (SN) and Registration ID

GPON Calix provides 3 different methods to register an ONT:
Method A:
The ONT is pre-configured on the OLT using the unique ONT serial number;
Method B:
ONT auto-discovery examines all relevant information and creates a unique ONT profile;
Method C:
pre-configuring ONT using Registration ID (in our case it can be called a password).

All three methods use the same protocol for registration, but differ in the setup process and authentication methods.

Calix also provides additional fields for ONT identification, such as:

  • ONT ID – logical designation of ONT, from 1 to 64000000;
  • Subscriber ID – text field up to 63 characters long;
  • Description – text field up to 47 characters long.

Let's take a closer look at registration methods.

Method A:

A unique serial number is used to register and authenticate the ONT.

In this case, the ONT ID, serial number and profile are prescribed in advance for the ONT, and services are configured as needed.

The advantages of this method are the automation of the process of activating services (if they are pre-configured) and the absence of the need to make any settings on the ONT itself during its installation.

Registration of ONT ID, serial number and ONT profile

Method B:

Auto-detection of ONTs linked to an existing profile.

When using this method, a profile is created in advance on the OLT with a unique ONT ID, but without specifying the serial number or registration ID.

The operator will only need to link the detected ONT to a pre-created profile; in this case, the serial number is filled in automatically. Activation of services, when pre-configured, also occurs automatically.

Auto-detection of ONTs linked to an existing profile

Method B:

Auto-discovery of ONTs with the creation of a new profile for each ONT.

When using this method, no preliminary setup is required. The operator creates profiles and binds detected ONTs to them as they are connected. This scenario will save time on creating profiles, but services will also have to be activated as new ONTs are discovered.

Method C:

In this method, a password (Registration ID) is used to bind the ONT to an existing profile. Pre-configuration of the profile using ONT ID and Registration ID is required, the serial number is learned automatically.

In addition to security, Method C also makes it easier to replace the ONT in the event of a malfunction: a new Registration ID is entered into the existing profile and the new ONT is associated with the working profile.

Registration ID password

A variety of ONT registration methods allow you to choose the most optimal scheme for each specific ONT, and the profile system allows you to quickly make changes to the quantity and quality of services provided to subscribers.

Next, we will look at the process of activating the service for providing high-speed access services from the network.

In the selected scenario, the client must access the HSI (High-Speed Internet) VLAN with both the downsream speed (downstream, from OLT to ONT) and upstream speed (upstream, from ONT to OLT) limited.

As you know, GPON technology allows you to get 2.5 Gb/s downstream speed and 1.2 Gb/s upstream speed on a PON port. When connecting up to 64 subscriber ONTs, these speeds are divided between ONTs in accordance with profiles. For downstream flows, profiles are created for each Ethernet port on the ONT with the ability to specify downstream CIR (Committed Information Rate) - guaranteed bandwidth and downstream PIR (Peak information rate) - peak bandwidth.

For example, a subscriber can be guaranteed a channel of 10 Mb/s, which will always be available (CIR) and, if there is free bandwidth, allowed to receive a speed of 20 Mb/s (PIR). These values are set in the Committed Rate for Downstream and Peak Rate for Downstream fields; the value can be set in increments of 64 Kb/s.

In our case, we will give the subscriber a speed of 10 Mb/s downstream and 3 Mb/s upstream. But the speed will not be guaranteed (PIR), these values will be achieved only if there is a free lane.

More fine-tuning of the upstream strip and DBA profiles is possible; we will discuss this in the next article.

Next, you need to configure a profile to handle traffic and add a VLAN tag.

As a rule, untagged traffic comes from the subscriber to the Ethernet port of the ONT, to which one or two VLAN tags (C-Tag and S-Tag) can be added to the ONT. It is also possible to replace a label on already tagged traffic or add a second one. Advanced configuration of P-bit parameters (QoS traffic classifications, 8 P-bit classes from 0 to 7) allows you to add or change P-bit values in both the C-Tag and the S-Tag. In this case, we configured a tagging profile for all traffic with VLAN 4081.

After this, all that remains is to activate the HSI service on the Ethernet port of the selected ONT:

Configuring services using profiles allows you to save time, avoid errors in settings and significantly simplify the process of connecting new subscribers and services. Pre-configured profiles for bandwidth, tagging and marking of traffic are a very convenient tool for the operator, giving flexibility in the allocation of GPON bandwidth.

GPON tariffs from Rostelecom

Rostelecom, within the framework of GPON technology for connecting to the Internet, provides users with services: home Internet, television, home landline telephone. These services are available both separately and as a package. Rates may vary depending on region. To find out about current offers and promotions, you need to visit the company’s official website and select a location (region, city).

In Moscow, subscribers are provided with several tariff plans. For example, unlimited Internet (100 Mbit/s), access to 136 TV channels, telephone connection, as a set of services, will cost from 549 rubles. per month. At the same time, a TV set-top box and a Wi-Fi router are provided for use. You can also separately connect to the Internet at speeds of up to 200 Mbit/s for 499 rubles.

Cons of GPON

Like any other technology, GPON has its disadvantages. Namely:

  • Lack of tariff plans that could unlock the full potential of the standard used;
  • This technology is not implemented everywhere. There are situations when the client is forced to pay for connecting his home to such a network;
  • It is necessary to rent or purchase a special terminal, since the fiber optic cable cannot be connected directly to one of the devices;
  • The cable is quite fragile and can easily be damaged by mechanical stress (for example, bending);
  • Connection in the private sector is almost impossible.
