The two largest telecommunications giants constantly compete with each other, offering a variety of tariff plans, additional options and bonuses to choose from. This situation makes relevant the question “Which is better: Megafon or MTS?”, to which we will try to answer in this material.
To get the final picture, you need to compare the following operator parameters:
- current TP lines and their maintenance costs;
- communication and Internet coverage area;
- connection quality and other data transfer indicators in different regions;
- calls within the home region, intercity and to competitor numbers;
- the work of the help desk and the speed of receiving a response to a request.
Which connection is better: Megafon or MTS?
Comparing MTS and Megafon tariffs should begin by studying the basic parameters.
Operator | MTS | Megaphone |
Customer support | Both representatives have an expanded number of service offices throughout their coverage area. A list of centers and their addresses can be obtained in the corresponding section of the official website. Connecting the service
How to make a call forward on Megafon? This is a question that interests many, since it is ignorance of connection technology that narrows the circle of users of this option. There are several ways to enable this function:
1. USSD commands. How to enable forwarding using preset operator commands? The general form is as follows: **service code*phone number#. The operation is completed by pressing the call button. In this case, the encoding is used to connect the conditional form. If you need to enable an unconditional view (which cancels all previously configured functions), you will need to enter code 21.
To perform redirection when the line is busy, the code will be 67. If the dialed number is simply unavailable, then the digital code will be 61. If it is impossible to establish a connection, you will need to select 62.
It is also possible to configure the duration of dialing to Megafon. How to do it? Additionally, when entering a command, after the phone number, put ** and enter the duration, ending the operand with # and the call button.
2. Through your personal account. You must first obtain a login password, which is sent after sending the command *105#. in a reply SMS. The login is the subscriber's number. After logging in, you will need to find the “Services” tab, where the required bookmark is located. The first thing you need to do is configure the redirection type, then fill in the remaining fields indicating the duration and simply confirm by clicking the “Connect” button.
3. Call the operator’s call center. The support service can be called toll-free at 800 550 0500 from any device or 926 111 0500 from a mobile phone. After dialing via the voice assistant, you will be prompted to configure the function. It is also possible to wait for a response from the operator, who will not only provide comprehensive instructions, but will independently activate the option. To connect using an operator, the subscriber will need to provide the following information:
- FULL NAME.;
- phone number;
- passport details;
- code word for subsequent user identification.

What is call forwarding
At the beginning of using the subscriber's SIM card, the mobile operator includes the forwarding option at no additional charge; use can be done by default. One of the varieties of this function is an alert that comes to the client during a conversation on the phone, when a third party tries to reach him.
Another way through which the built-in forwarding function is manifested is an SMS indicating that the subscriber has not been reached. Speaking about the cost of the forwarding service from the mobile operator MTS in Russia, there is no set amount, it all depends on what number capacity the subscriber configures it for. Because the user has the opportunity to activate call forwarding to a special additional services number. You can actually connect the number of another provider - Beeline or MegaFon. An international number is also included in the list; forwarding can also be done to a landline number - in all options the cost of the service will be set.
In addition to the above hidden services, users are given the opportunity to put a call on hold for free, or activate “Who is calling”. In the first case there is no fee, and in the second - according to the tariff. Among the forwarding services is the network service “You have been called”.
How much does it cost to call from MTS to Megafon and vice versa
The cost of a call from MTS to Megafon is also relevant for potential clients. All popular tariffs with a monthly fee include a prepaid number of minutes for making calls to numbers of other operators, which helps out when the need arises.
The specific cost of one minute of connection may vary depending on the specific situation, which makes it necessary to conduct an individual study of each TP. The cost of such a call can range from 25 kopecks to 1 ruble 80 kopecks. The specific service region plays an important role in this matter.

The unconditional form can be canceled by dialing the number 21. To cancel all types of forwarding at once, the command should look like this: ##002#.
- Also, disabling the option is done by logging into your personal account, where you will need to perform a sequence of actions similar to connecting, with the only difference that you will need to select “Disconnect” instead of “Connect”.
- The last method is to call the technical support service, where the subscriber will be asked to provide their full name and code word.

Which connection is better: Megafon or MTS?
Comparing MTS and Megafon tariffs should begin with an overview of the basic capabilities and characteristics. Here you can note the following parameters:
- Help Desk. Both representatives can boast of an expanded information base on official websites, the ability to make a free call and contact the nearest service office to clarify the nuances of service and resolve controversial issues;
- Personal Area. The LC system is an integral part of user interaction with the services of telecommunication operators. You can use this service completely free of charge by logging into the WEB interface or installing the appropriate smartphone application;
- coverage area. This criterion is also implemented at the highest level by operators, which improves the quality of communication. However, supported technologies and regions available for connection may be disabled. Detailed information can be found on the coverage area comparison maps. Users note better voice quality from Megafon, but the level of connection to the tower in most cases is better from MTS;
- Additional services. The lion's share of the efforts was done by the operators' employees to implement an expanded list of additional features. functions that anyone can activate on their number. At the same time, it is worth noting the policy of customer loyalty: users of Megafon and Mobile TeleSystems can register a promised payment or take advantage of a “credit of trust,” which allows them to use communication services if they have a debt.
MTS call forwarding
Call forwarding to MTS is a service provided by , which allows you to configure call routing from the main number to any other.
How it works?
Subscriber No. 1 makes a call using any available means of communication from any city or point on the globe; when the option is enabled, subscriber No. 2 will be redirected to another number entered during setup. This can be a home phone number, a mobile number of a Russian or foreign operator.
Who is it suitable for?
Anyone can use call forwarding, regardless of what tariff plan is active on the number.
Modern realities are such that it is extremely difficult to get by with just one number from a specific mobile operator. To rationally use phone resources and to ensure that callers are always in an accessible status, you can enable call forwarding.
For example, if you have two phones, you will always be in touch, even if one of them has a low battery, fails due to technical reasons, or gets lost. This is especially convenient when traveling, when you always need to have feedback with your family and friends.
Forwarding format
There are several main types of call forwarding:
- All the challenges. All incoming calls that will be received by the servers of the MTS operator will be processed and sent to another number in the “Auto” mode.
- Number unavailable. If the subscriber is in a place where the network signal is weak or completely absent, redirection will be triggered.
- The number is busy. In some ways, this view can be called a “multi-channel” option. If the subscriber is busy talking and another incoming call arrives at this time, it will be redirected to the second number.
- No response within a certain time. If up to 30 seconds pass when making a call, you can enable call forwarding. Moreover, the operator provided the possibility of fine tuning at intervals of 5 seconds.
Important information : when traveling abroad, we recommend checking with your operator about the cost of calling call forwarding, since both incoming and outgoing calls will cost twice the standard price of 1 minute.

- TPs with a subscription fee include the ability to work with high-speed mobile Internet. The trend of providing complete unlimited traffic makes itself felt: such tariffs are already available for connection and offer an affordable cost of service;
- You can purchase or rent USB modems at official sales centers. This way you can use data transfer on your laptop or computer. Megafon has a separate line of tariffs for this;
- If the basic volumes of prepaid traffic are not enough for you, you can always add additional GB to your number. The cost here is also at the same level.
When considering which Internet is better than Megafon or MTS, it is also impossible to come to a consensus. The Internet works faster in different regions, which makes it necessary to study the test results (the Speedtest service is good for this).

How much does it cost to call from MTS to Megafon and vice versa
When it comes to calls to numbers within the network, you should give preference to Megafon, here the tariff is free. MTS offers such conditions only for the home region. Each solution with a subscription fee includes a certain number of minutes that can be spent on calls to numbers of any operators. Exceeding this volume will be accompanied by additional tariffs. The cost of a call from MTS to Megafon is much more profitable (the price per minute can vary from 0.95 to 0.25 rubles). For example, a minute of conversation with a subscriber of another operator over and above Megafon’s package on the “Turn on! Write" will cost 12.5 rubles.
IP telephony is the cheapest way
Are you looking for the opportunity to make the cheapest calls to Belarus, but don’t want to change your tariff plan? Then you should take a closer look at the tariffs of IP telephony operators. They will offer you affordable prices and high-quality communication. In order to use IP telephony services, you will need:
- Computer with Internet access and headset;
- VOIP adapter with a regular telephone;
- Smartphone with Android application.
The most popular is the “computer and headset” combination. As for VOIP adapters, they are used only by those who understand their benefits. Also, smartphone applications from individual IP telephony operators are gaining popularity - they allow you to provide inexpensive calls to Belarus from anywhere in the world where there is Internet access.
In order to ensure favorable prices for communications with Belarus, you should select an IP telephony service provider by analyzing the prices they offer. There are a lot of operators, so finding the most suitable offer can take time. But you can make cheap calls to Belarus without changing the tariff plan on your mobile phone. We once gave preference to Zadarma.
It should be noted that calls to Belarus are almost the most expensive direction of communication. As an analysis of offers from IP telephony operators shows, the cost of calls to other countries is significantly less than to Belarus.
What is more profitable Megafon or MTS - conclusion
Having considered the above information, based on reviews from real clients and expert data, we can come to the following conclusions:
- the quality of communication and cost of service are at the same level;
- mobile Internet offers traffic packages and complete unlimited;
- Megafon boasts profitable tariff plans for tablets and computers;
- MTS is distinguished by profitable calls to numbers of other operators.
The final choice depends on your preferences and the characteristics of your region of residence.
What it is
Megafon forwarding means redirecting an incoming call to another number. This service can be used when the phone is low and you don’t want to miss important calls. In this situation, you can transfer an incoming call to any working phone number (landline, cell, work or home). Even if the device is turned off, when you need to know who is calling, you can configure the service and organize call forwarding.
Megafon offers call forwarding on your phone, divided into two types:
- unconditional forwarding. The term “unconditional forwarding” means transferring an incoming call to the number set for reception always and for all calls;
- conditional. This includes call forwarding if the phone is switched off, the line is busy, or if a connection cannot be made.
There is also a gradation of call forwarding based on the type of incoming call:
- Forwarding all incoming calls on Megafon.
- Transferring calls from a landline phone.
- Redirect calls from a fax machine.
The last type includes SMS forwarding on Megafon. The service for redirecting short messages worked until recently. The operator has currently removed this feature. Thus, forwarding incoming SMS from Megafon is impossible.
Each of the presented varieties has its own digital encoding, which is necessary to set up forwarding using USSD commands.
Which operator is better - Megafon, Beeline, MTS or Tele2?
It should be said right away that this article does not have the goal of advertising any operator, we have only collected in one publication the facts and opinions of the majority of subscribers about the most popular cellular communication providers in Russia, and only you can choose which operator is best. In fact, making such a choice is quite difficult, because the same operator cannot be the best at everything. Each mobile communications provider tries to make its services as accessible, convenient and competitive as possible. New tariffs, services and services appear regularly, attracting the attention of customers. Operators spare no expense on advertising their services. In general, today one can observe a serious struggle between operators for customers. So, let's look at the features characteristic of the most popular mobile operators in our country.
Megaphone
One of the leaders in the Russian communications market is Megafon. The operator has been operating for quite some time, and to be more specific, the company was founded on June 17, 1993. Over such a long period of existence, the operator has managed to accumulate a fairly impressive customer base. Today, more than 73 million people use Megafon’s services. At least this is the number the operator gives.
Advantages:
- The largest coverage area in Russia. MegaFon installs its base stations even where the number of subscribers is so low that their communication costs will not cover the costs of installing and maintaining the station;
- Use of advanced technologies. MegaFon tries to keep up with the times and be the first to introduce the most advanced mobile communications features. For example, the possibility of mobile video communication was initially introduced by MegaFon, and only after that other operators began to use it;
- High internet speed. Thanks to the use of modern equipment, the operator provides its customers with fairly high Internet speeds.
Flaws:
- Terrible help service. In principle, today this problem is relevant for all operators. Calling the Megafon operator is sometimes so problematic that many simply do not wait for an answer and look for other ways to solve the problem. But that's not all. Contact center specialists are often completely incompetent and often make mistakes;
- Complexity and tricks in tariffs. Another pressing problem for many operators, but especially pronounced for Megafon. Every year, tariff plans become more and more confusing, which causes dissatisfaction among many subscribers.
Beeline
Another quite popular operator in Russia. The company began operations on August 6, 1993. As you understand, during this time the company managed to win the trust of a huge number of people. According to unofficial data, the Beeline client vase has more than 60 million subscribers. We will not say whether this figure really coincides with reality.
Advantages:
- A large number of tariff plans and services. The operator is ready to select the optimal solution for almost every client;
- Frequent promotional offers. All operators organize various promotions, but this can be seen especially often with Beeline;
- Competent operators. The customer support center specialists do their work quite well and quickly solve customer problems. But with the waiting time for a specialist’s response, everything is also bad here. Calling a Beeline operator is sometimes not easy, and the high workload of specialists forces subscribers to hang on the phone for a long time.
Flaws:
- Problems with operation. On the Internet you can find many negative reviews about periodic failures in the operator’s work. Sometimes it is impossible to call and even check the balance;
- Unprofitable roaming. When you are in roaming, using the services of this operator is extremely unprofitable;
- Poor coverage outside the city. Unlike Megafon, Beeline does not seek to cover areas that are unprofitable in terms of monetization. That is, the operator does not plan to install its base stations where it is unprofitable.
MTS
Speaking about which operator is better, it was impossible not to consider MTS. The company began its activities on April 16, 1993 and operates quite successfully to this day. Compared to other Russian cellular operators, MTS has the largest customer base - the operator serves more than 107 million subscribers in all countries where it operates.
Advantages:
- High quality communication. Thanks to the use of modern and expensive equipment, MTS provides high quality communications both outdoors and inside buildings;
- Interesting GPRS tariffs. The operator has many interesting offers for mobile Internet users; Extensive roaming network. The operator has made sure that subscribers can use their services from anywhere in the world with maximum comfort.
Flaws:
- Smallest network coverage area compared to Megafon and Beeline;
- Relatively high prices for services. Competitors provide some tariffs with similar conditions cheaper. However, the key word here is “some”;
- Poor technical support. As mentioned earlier, the problem is relevant for all operators, including MTS. To hear an answer from a specialist, you often have to wait a long time, so many people decide not to call the MTS operator at all, but to resolve the issues that arise in other ways. Fortunately, the operator took care of this and created the ability to independently manage services in the MTS personal account. By the way, this feature is provided by all operators.
Tele 2
Tele2 was initially a foreign company, but when the Swedish group was about to leave the Russian market, the company was acquired by the VTB Group. Tele2 was the fourth cellular operator in Russia by number of subscribers. Today, the operator’s customer base is more than 23 million people. The main advantage of the Tele2 operator is the fairly low price of tariffs. In this way, the company is trying to lure away some of the clients belonging to the top three. However, there is no rapid growth of the subscriber base, and the reason for this is the small coverage area and periodic communication failures .
This is where we will end this review. Which operator is better is up to you to decide. In fact, making this choice is quite difficult, which is why many people use the services of several operators at once.
About “non-tariffed” calls from mobile phones to numbers 8-800-xxxxxxx in Russia
New Year's holidays for a geek are a great time to do things that you wouldn't normally get around to doing. So I, while all home computers are undergoing defragmentation and annual mega-backups, dug up my list of things to do “that I didn’t get around to in 2011.”
So, my question today is: is it true that calls from a mobile phone to any numbers starting with 8-800-xxxxxxx are free for the caller in Russia?
This question is a no-no for a second, and it has arisen among many users of call centers and hotlines of banks, courier services, insurance agencies and other organizations where you need to call for a long time, listening to a looped compressed mp3 dozens of times in a row. After all, if the call is free, you can start calling while standing in a traffic jam, or just on the way to work - if you walk. But if it happens that they answer you unexpectedly QUICKLY, it’s hard to hear important information in the noise of the street, and it’s not very convenient to dictate. What if the call turns out to be paid? Then it’s better to pay more attention to him, call from a quiet, calm place, and try to figure out the time of day for him when the line of waiting callers will be shorter.
I live in St. Petersburg and check the situation only with local cellular operators, but the information will most likely be of interest to Khabra residents from other cities of the Russian Federation. Under the habracat there are SENSATIONS, INTRIGUES, INVESTIGATIONS^W unexpectedly there are a lot of letters and ambiguous food for thought.
MegaFon North-West
My main mobile phone has a SZ Megafon SIM card.
Let's start with it. On the OPSOS website I immediately find the call center number - now it is 8-800-3330500. I listen to the robot congratulating me on the holidays and wishing me to always stay in touch (oh, it would always depend on me personally...), and quickly (it’s still holidays!) I switch to a live operator.
— Tell me, is it true that calls from a mobile phone to any numbers starting with 8-800 (for example, bank call centers, etc.) are free for me? — If this is a hotline number with free dialing, then yes, they are free. (thanks, Cap!)
— Still, are there non-toll-free numbers for 8-800? - Give me a specific number, I'll check. - Thank you, there is no need to check, I would just like to understand this question for myself, in general, so to speak, form... - I understand. Please wait a few minutes, I need clarification.
Both! So it's not that simple? We wait... however, not for long - at most 2 minutes.
- Thank you for waiting. Free calls to numbers in the range from 8-800-100xxxx to 8-800-799xxxx.
- And the rest?
- Tariffed. (!!!)
- At the standard price of my tariff plan, or maybe something else? — I can’t tell you this, but you can check for a specific number.
My inner paranoid is rejoicing - the suspicion that “there is one caveat” is completely justified: you should not believe your eyes and the popular myth that 8-800 numbers are free. More precisely, you should “trust, but verify.”
Beeline St. Petersburg
Next, a spare phone with a Beeline SIM card is used.
The mobile operator’s website offers two telephone numbers: call-0611 and “landline” 8-812-3466000. It's funny that the option with 8-800 is not offered (although I suspect that if you look for it, you will find it). I make a short call, listen to a robot, they don’t congratulate you on the holidays, but they advertise the iPhone 4s twice. A little slower than in Megafon, but still noticeably faster than on weekdays, I switch to a live operator.
— Tell me, is it true that calls from a mobile phone to any numbers starting with 8-800 (call centers, etc.) are free? — Yes, in Russia calls to numbers starting with 8-800 are not charged.
— Still, are there non-toll-free numbers for 8-800?
— No, according to my information, in Russia all numbers on 8-800 are free. (hmm...)
- It’s strange, another mobile operator told me that only certain numbers on 8-800 are free, and the rest are paid. I have no complaints against you, I just want to figure it out - how can this be? - Everything is free with us, don’t worry.
That's the news! Either the operator of the Beeline call center really does not have correct information on our issue (then - shame and shame on this company), or the megaphone was misinformed (but that doesn’t happen - if they deceive, then they present things in a better light, and not worse than they actually are), or the situation is really changing from OPSOS to OPSOS.
MTS St. Petersburg
In this case (at the beginning of the article I was hoping for a simpler and faster outcome of the undertaking), I was not too lazy to find an MTS SIM card, which I usually don’t use at all, and contact them.
On the website of the red operator, on the first attempt, the call center phone number was, SUDDENLY, unable to be found. Click on the “Help and Service” link in the menu (as if the hell you could go to their site for anything other than looking for help or service information, yeah)
and finally we find the number - now it is 8-800-3330890.
I call, the robot congratulates me on the holidays, and also asks if I want to evaluate the specialist’s answer - I answer, okay, I want to (a controversial usability decision: I would first like to deal with my problem, and only then with the quality of service... but oh well ).
Ten seconds of music and I'm switched to a live operator.
— Tell me, is it true that calls from a mobile phone connected to MTS to any numbers starting with 8-800 are free? — Yes, any calls to numbers starting with 8-800 are free.
— Still, are there non-toll-free numbers for 8-800?
— No, all numbers on 8-800 are non-tariffable.
— Look: another mobile operator told me that only certain numbers on 8-800 are free, and the rest are not. I have no complaints about you, I just want to fully understand - how can this be? — Our 8-800 are definitely free, don’t worry.
A few seconds after hanging up, the robot called back and asked for ratings on the quality of the answer.
It's getting weirder and weirder. Okay, let's move on: I don't have Tele2 and Skylink SIM cards, I'll try to call them from a number that isn't theirs (I made previous calls from the SIM cards of the OPSOS I called - being 99% sure that the call center employee is notified by their software about whether the caller is a client or not, I expect that the approach to “my” clients may be a little, but still more conscientious; further in the text I’m calling from a Beeline SIM card).
Tele2 St. Petersburg
We look at the Tele2 website, we see a “short” number - 611, and a “landline” number - 8-812-9890022. Like Beeline, call center numbers with the 8-800 prefix are not offered. It turns out that since I currently don’t have the opportunity to call from a phone serviced by Tele2 (or maybe I’m their regular customer who urgently needs to block my SIM card due to its loss?)
- I’ll have to pay for the call. I naively believed that this doesn’t happen in the 21st century =) Then the scenario is standard - a robot (without congratulations), switching to an operator... stop! The robot does not offer to switch to the operator! o_O After walking through the robot's menu, which offers to listen to various FAQs, I finally make my way to a live operator. 10 seconds of music, and then they answered me.
— Tell me, if I call from a mobile phone connected to Tele2 to a number starting with 8-800, are these calls always free, or are there any nuances? — If you call a toll-free hotline number, then such a call is not charged. (hi Cap, hi Megafon)
— Still, are there non-toll-free numbers for 8-800?
- Give me a specific number, I’ll check if it’s paid. - Thank you, there is no need to check anything, I just want to clarify this question for myself - are calls to 8-800 always free, or should you still be wary? — Some numbers starting with 8-800 are free, some are paid.
You can always check the cost of a call to such a number with us. I checked the balance and it’s true, a call to the Tele2 call center cost me 5 rubles 36 kopecks. I note that on the first attempt I couldn’t get through - the mobile phone showed that the conversation had started, but the speaker was quiet. A minute later I tried again and got through. Moreover, the problem is definitely not the quality of reception on my side, since from the same device, from the same SIM card and from the same kitchen, all the other calls mentioned above went through without problems.
That is, the situation is the same as in Megafon, only without specifics. In total, the “big four” GSM cellular operators in St. Petersburg are divided into two equal camps: MTS and Beeline assure that the prefix 8-800 is a sufficient reason to believe that a call to this number will not be charged for their subscribers ; Megafon and Tele2 claim the opposite.
Skylink St. Petersburg
I must admit, I know about Skylink mostly from hearsay - at the time when it was chosen by people who were in dire need of mobile Internet, which was still too slow (or expensive? or unstable?) from GSM operators, I didn’t like these people accepted and was content with simple GSM voice communication; when such a need arose for me, GPRS from Megafon, and a little later - EDGE from it and Mobile WiMAX from Yota - completely covered my needs. So I didn’t bother with unfamiliar technology and buy an expensive handset specifically for this purpose. The last case known to me when the choice of a mobile phone of the “exotic” CDMA standard instead of the “standard” GSM was made by a person consciously and justifiably occurred in 2008, during my student years - then at St. Petersburg State University, during written exams in the classroom, evil teachers turned on the “jammer” , which made noise at frequencies of 900/1800 MHz (whether there was a third band for the 1900 band, or whether there were two bands, but wide ones, I don’t know)
and made students’ attempts to get help from ICQ assistants sitting with books absolutely impossible, and SMS is too unlikely to count on seriously. So, CDMA phones, either due to frequencies far from the GSM band, or (which is more unlikely, but who knows for sure) due to the protection from deliberately induced interference originally built into this communication standard, continued to work perfectly and delight their owners the opportunity to resort to unauthorized techniques to improve the quality of their exam answers. This is a life hack.So, I myself have never been their subscriber, as a layman - I haven’t heard anything about them for a long time, but I decided to call them anyway. Just in case, for the sake of completeness.
On the website of the last operator here, we are faced with a harsh choice between two “city” contact numbers: “Sales” and “Service: (812) 715-05-55.” We are surprised at this seemingly hopelessly outdated work scheme, surprised at the absence of both 8-800 and a “short” number, and call “service”. The robot greets me and instead of congratulating me on the holidays, he warns me that mobile phones are a source of harmful electromagnetic radiation, and Skylink phones operate in the CDMA standard and emit less! Leaving the caller to think about it, the robot suggests waiting for a specialist response “about one minute,” but the wait is more like two and a half. And here he is - a live operator.
— Tell me, if I call from a mobile phone connected to Skylink to a number starting with 8-800, will such a call always be free, or are there any nuances? — Usually calls to these numbers are free, with all mobile operators, but there are also numbers for which this rule does not apply.
— That is, in the general case, seeing a number with 8-800, I cannot know whether it is paid or not? - No you can not. In the case where such a call is paid, you should usually be warned about this on the side you are calling. — Do you have the technical ability to check a specific number, whether it is free or not? — Unfortunately, we do not have such a database. — If I encounter fraud and my call is charged, although I was not warned about this, what should I do? - Then you should contact the company that owns this number, and in case of fraud - the authorities.
I checked the balance - a call to the Skylink call center cost 4 rubles 69 kopecks.
It’s funny that it was on the “exotic” and now unpopular Skylink that I was given, perhaps, the most complete and understandable answer, albeit without Megafon’s specifics. What remains for us?
Eventually
I almost forgot: In dialogues with everyone except Skylink, at the end I asked what to do if a call to a seemingly free number with the 8-800 prefix turns out to be charged - every time they answered the same way, they say, then call us, dictate the problem phone number - we'll figure out.
I almost forgot-2: 5 seconds after lights out, after talking with the Megafon call center operator, I received an SMS saying that I had won a Mercedes-BenzE350 4Matic (literally). It was suggested to send a reply SMS to a short number. As far as I know, such spam is against the rules of even the most loyal content providers and, naturally, OPSOS. In theory, if you don’t mind the time, you can show conscientiousness and inform your operator, who will kick the content provider, and as a result, the final spammer will not be executed, but at least significantly fined. So, I tried it. The operator didn't care at all. But that's a completely different story...
So in the end
As a result, the answer to the question I posed in the topic is:
Is it true that calls from a mobile phone to any numbers starting with 8-800-xxxxxxx are free for the caller in Russia?
- no that's not true.
But the truth is harsh and ambiguous: there can be no certainty in advance about the tariffability of a particular number; you need to check and understand.
But new questions arose:
- Why does information from different official (can you call it a consultation with a trained call center specialist?) sources not agree? Is the situation with charging the same numbers different for different OPSOS? — I personally doubt it, and am inclined to believe that the operators simply do not know the correct answer and the lack of development of their work scheme, which did not allow them to quickly give the client an exhaustively correct answer
- Why, positioned as “the most accessible and cheapest” operator Tele2 and the military-style stern operator Skylink, which “has been confidently fishing in the forest and under water since the nineties,” do not have free call centers in 2012 (for those callers who use a SIM card other than theirs) ? Or maybe they have such toll-free numbers, but they don’t appear on the main page of the site?
- The intrusiveness, slowness and terribly inconvenient interface (the lack of an obvious way to quickly skip the chatter and jump straight to a live operator) of the answering robots of all five OPSOS, especially the Tele2 robot, is the crookedness of the author of the technical specifications for them, the lack of usability in the states of these wealthy companies - specialists, or a deliberate measure designed to reduce the load even on the “first circle” TP operators (if division into levels is practiced by everyone, I know for sure about this only at Megafon)?
- Why on the websites of all the mentioned OPSOS, except Skylink, are call center telephone numbers displayed on the page not in text, but in graphics? The crookedness of the developers with, again, the lack of usability specialists, or (paranoid mode on!) they did this on purpose so that phone numbers do not end up in the PS cache, and if something happens, when replacing a picture with a new number, leave a minimum of traces of the old one?
- Is it possible to check tariffs for 8-800 numbers yourself? In theory, such information should be in the public domain, albeit in a non-obvious form (by analogy with the correct price tags for short numbers for paid SMS and “subscriptions”, which are difficult to find, but possible)?
- Who will be responsible for all this? (answers Alexander Druz)
In fact, of course, I am not at all paranoid (simple and honest eyes)
and my little investigation was spurred more by idle curiosity than by the desire to really EXPOSE, EXPOSE, SENSATION^W save a lot of money and restore the trampled positions of Justice. However, perhaps I saved someone a few nerve cells.
All information is given as of today (January 2, 2012), dialogues with call center operators are not given verbatim (I took notes from memory immediately after the call), my judgments are subjective, and in no way am I campaigning FOR NAVALNY for any of the current ones persons of this story.
I wish everyone reliable communication, good mood and congratulations on the upcoming 11111011100!
How did the operators compare?
We considered the tariffs of mobile operators that are part of the “Big Four”, that is, they have the largest number of subscribers in Russia. These are MTS, Tele2, Megafon and Beeline. The tariffs offered by operators for smartphones in the Moscow region were considered. Fares offered as part of promotions were not considered. If one operator had several tariffs in the category under study, then the cheapest one was selected. For example, when choosing a tariff for those who like to make calls, operators calculated the cost of a minute of call without taking into account additional options included in the package. Tariffs were ranked according to cost: from lowest to highest. Tariffs are current as of May 14, 2019. They may be changed in the future.

How to connect
After a detailed analysis, instructions were prepared that allow you to connect call forwarding to MTS in several ways:
USSD command
- Using simple combinations, you can activate the desired forwarding on your number (depending on the type).
- To enable full redirection from the MTS SIM card, enter the command **21*number_where_redirection will be_performed# and the call button. For example: **21*79785557788#.
- For incoming calls during a conversation - **67*number#.
- During the period of subscriber unavailability - **62*number#.
- If you do not answer within 5-30 seconds - **61*number*time_until_30#.
Attention : the number is indicated with the international code of the mobile operator. This rule applies even to intranet redirects using USSD combinations.
Official site
If you have a personal computer or tablet, we recommend using a more convenient and practical method.
Instructions:
- Open your browser and go to the official MTS website, which is available at: mts.ru
- In the upper right corner, click on the “Login” - “Mobile Communications” button and log in to the “MTS Personal Account” service using your phone number and password.
- Go to the “Number Management” section and click on the “Call Forwarding” item.
- Click on the “Add new forwarding condition” button.
- Choose from the available options the one that best suits your requirements. Enter the number in ten-digit format for forwarding.
