How it all began

Demina comes from the Tula region. “We had a private house, a lot of land. We kept poultry, livestock, and hired people worked for us,” she recalls. — Grandmother Vera Fedorovna was authoritarian and businesslike, with a good reputation among the local population - a real businesswoman. This probably influenced my desire to start my own business.”

As a child, Demina dreamed of becoming a doctor, but at a family council they decided to send her to the Moscow Institute of Meat and Dairy Industry; this was the desire of her grandparents. After college, Demina ended up at the Mikoyanovsky meat processing plant, where she worked her way up from a foreman to a chief technologist.

In 1992, she invited her Muscovite husband, whom she met at the institute, to open his own meat processing shop. “Building a business was my initiative. Oleg didn’t particularly welcome this, but then he began to help me,” says Demina. The couple rented premises in the south of Moscow, in Orekhovo-Borisovo, and started with the production of small sausages. They managed to agree with Guta Bank on a 10 million ruble loan. “We mortgaged an apartment, a car, and spent our own savings,” Demina recalls.

In 1995, the Moscow mayor's office helped the workshop get going. A Sausages store was opened in the city hall building, and one of the employees suggested paying attention to Velcom. “We did not give bribes,” Demina assures. — It’s just that that employee lived in Orekhovo-Borisovo and knew our products. Word of mouth worked."

By 1996, Velcom's production volume increased to 15 tons per day. But the workshop was working at its maximum capacity. Deciding that she needed to develop further, Demina took a bold step - building a new meat processing plant (no one in the industry did this at that time).

It took three years to find a new site. For 5 hectares in the village of Pavlovskaya Sloboda on the Novorizhskoye Highway, the Demins paid $2 million. Their money was only enough for the land, and for construction and the purchase of equipment they took out a loan of about $50 million. It was provided by the Swiss investment company Parintek Industries at only 3% per annum. In exchange for a low percentage, the Swiss were given 51% of the company's shares; over time, subsidies continued and the share of investors increased to 90%. Now only 10% of the meat processing plant is owned by the family. “Which, to be honest, I regret,” admits Demina.
