InterviewZvooq CEO about why we need music services

What, in your opinion, is the role of music services in a person’s daily life?

Can I start from afar? I’m from Holland myself, and when the guys from Dream Industries invited me to work at Zvooq, Russian pirates were famous throughout the world, everyone had heard about it. And then I thought: what works in Russia can work in the rest of the world. I had already heard about VKontakte and noticed something unique about music in Russia: this social network, which integrated a huge amount of music (even if the labels simply hated it), greatly influenced the fact that music became much more socialized here than elsewhere. All thanks to the fact that all the music was collected in one place. Now there are more music services. The problem is that if you're using one service and your friend is using another, there's no way for you to be united, and there's a danger that the music will fall apart again. So I think one of the main challenges of the digital music space in the near future will be to unite people who use different music services. For example, you use Zvooq and share a song on Facebook, your friend from Sweden clicks on the link, and it opens in Spotify for him - this is very important. And this is where VKontakte can play a very important role. I know about the difficult relationship between Pavel Durov and the music industry and I think that we have something to discuss.

What do you think about Russian music?

It’s interesting for me to be in Russia, I sometimes turn on the TV before going to bed to get a little culture shock: Dima Bilan, Stas Mikhailov, Alla Pugacheva and all that. I adore Russian drum-n-bass producers, I'm pleasantly surprised how popular this genre is here - in Holland it's a very underground topic.

The problem with Russian artists is that for some reason they don’t understand that there are many ways to make money, especially in the digital era, other than selling records and live shows. Music itself is not a product, the product is its carrier, the media. People pay for products, not for music itself. If you want to pay for music, then go down to the passage on the street and pay a street musician to play Rachmaninoff for you.

What products can you make money on, for example?

Depends on the artist, on how he positions himself. I don't want to stereotype, but to put it bluntly, if you're a hipster icon, you can release a T-shirt with a triangle and everyone will wear it. There's Kickstarter, for example, where musicians have to be really creative and offer people a product that isn't necessarily music itself. Let's imagine that all people are very selfish (although this is not true): what can you offer them in exchange for the money they give you? Here's an exercise for you: come up with a creative answer to this question. Some will be interested in seeing their face on the cover of your CD, others will be interested in participating in the video. Amanda Palmer is a great example of answering this question.

But what if you just really like making music and you don’t know how to sell anything at all, you want to sit at home and not communicate with anyone?

Then you better make really good music and surround yourself with people who can sell it well, because without it there’s nowhere. In general, my philosophy is for everyone to do only what they are strong at - this is how the strongest teams are obtained.

Premium subscription cost

The Internet fee when using the Zvooq service will be 0 rubles. This condition applies to the entire line of tariff packages “My Tele2”, “Black” and Premium class subscribers. Listening to songs will also cost 0 rubles.

Conditions for a paid subscription to Zvooq Tele2 when connecting to a tariff plan:

  • “My Online+”, “My Online” and “My Conversation” will be 99 rubles/month;
  • “My Tele2” will be 7.5 rubles/day.

Analyst's opinion

Finance analyst Leonid Deltsyn estimates Zvooq.ru at 300 million rubles. He notes that the pandemic has had a positive impact on interest in streaming services. Since February 2021, the stock price of the streaming service Spotify began to rise and reached $241 per share, more than double what it was a year ago.

At the same time, the market for streaming services in Russia will be divided between portals, Delitsyn believes. Now the largest players in this market are Yandex, Vkontakte and YouTube, in addition, Spotify recently entered the Russian market. In such conditions, it was lucky for Zvooq.ru to sell to Sberbank.
