How to strengthen a cellular signal?

There are several ways to improve cellular communications.

  1. Call the operator and report the problem, most likely they will listen to you and take note of the issue, but it will take a very long time to resolve.
  2. If you live within the city and your apartment has a fast Internet channel, you can connect a miniature low-power cellular base station or femtocell. Read more about femtocell functions and settings here.
  3. In all other cases, I recommend installing a cellular amplifier or another repeater.

The principle of operation is that the signal from the cell operator’s tower is sent to an external antenna and travels through a cable to the repeater, which is essentially a dual amplifier. Operational amplifiers restore the signal to the desired level and send it to the internal antenna, the mobile phone receives the signal.

Then the signal from the mobile device arrives at the internal (service) antenna and through the cable goes to the second operational amplifier, where it is amplified and further transmitted to the outdoor (doner) antenna, and from it to the operator’s base station.

The repeater has a controller; it monitors the status of signal levels and automatically adjusts their output power. Thus, you receive a high-quality and stable cellular signal.

Various problems arise and in order to optimally solve them we need to decide what we are strengthening - voice communication for calls or we need to get the highest possible speed on the Internet channel.

Now I will tell you in what cases which equipment is used.

Option 1

We need to get high-quality voice communications to communicate with friends and colleagues. In this case, a repeater is used. It amplifies the signal of all cellular operators at once at a certain frequency.

To select equipment, it is important to know:

  1. What is the signal level on the street (measured in Dbm, has negative values, for example -87 dbm). It is important to measure the signal strength of all operators whose performance needs to be improved;
  2. At what frequency does the strongest signal arrive (900, 1800, 2100 MHz). Keep in mind that the phone indoors will always land on the highest frequency. For example, if there is a 3G signal in the 900 and 2100 MHz frequencies, the phone will always select the upper band. Therefore, you should choose a repeater at 2100 MHz;
  3. The area of ​​the room where communication needs to be provided. Larger area means a more powerful amplifier is needed.

Option 2

We are located outside the city and we need high-speed mobile Internet. In this case, we use an external antenna.

The antenna can be combined with a modem, with a router, or with both.

There are many different solutions on the market, from an external antenna connecting it to a modem, to factory devices that combine an antenna, modem and router. This is a more expensive device, but it is convenient and reliable.

The following criteria are important:

  1. In what standard and at what frequency does the cellular operator provide data services in your area. To “strengthen the Internet” you can work with 3G and 4G. But you need to choose 4G LTE; it supports MIMO and frequency aggregation (this is what gives the gain in speed). Most likely, in the place where the antenna is supposed to be installed, there will be signals from both standards, and even if 4G is weaker, it is still worth focusing on it.
  2. The weaker the signal outside, the higher the gain the antenna should have. The antenna needs to be raised as high as possible; it is advisable to install it on a mast attached to the ridge of the house.
  3. All modern devices are designed to support MIMO technology, which is why we choose LTE. LTE uses MIMO systems to improve reliability and to increase data transfer rates. This is achieved by spatial coding of the signal, when data is received and transmitted by systems of several antennas on one channel. Both spatial diversity in reception and spatial diversity in transmission are implemented. Minimum 2 antennas required. Therefore, if you just buy an antenna, make sure it has 2 outputs.

Option 3

Requires voice communication and internet. We use a repeater; it amplifies the signal of all operators on the selected frequency.

It is important to understand that in this case the Internet is used as a secondary service for servicing office and home gadgets. To watch streaming video over the Internet, you need to use Option 2 with MIMO technology; repeaters cannot work with it.

For the selection of equipment, the rules from option 1 apply here, with some clarifications.

Voice transmission in 4G networks is provided by VoLTE technology, which allows you to carry on a conversation without switching to 3G/GSM networks. Due to the fact that not all base stations support it, it is the 3G standard that is worth enhancing.

Currently, LTE (it’s too early to talk about 5G in Russia!) is the fastest data transmission technology, and soon it will become the most dominant among all mobile Internet technologies that are used. Therefore, it is worth considering the use of 2- and 3-band repeaters, which amplify the signal at several frequencies at once. For country houses, 1800/2100 MHz is suitable, for offices in the city - 2100/2600 MHz and 1800/2100/2600 MHz.

Cost of equipment

The cheapest kits for strengthening cellular communications based on a repeater will cost 10-12 thousand rubles. Coverage area up to 100 sq.m.

A set of equipment (antenna with an integrated modem) to strengthen the Internet signal costs 5-7 thousand rubles, an external client MikroTik LTE kit (factory version) costs 10-12 thousand rubles.

It is also worth mentioning that a repeater is a technically complex device with two-way communication, and improper installation and configuration of the system turns the repeater into a very noisy device that can interfere with the operation of the base station.
