Calls in your region
Dialing a number from a landline phone is practically no different from calling from a mobile phone. In this procedure, the type of device and dial (dial or numeric keypad) does not matter.
For home dialing, the option with +7 input is not suitable, because this sign is not on the device panel or keyboard. Therefore, +7 is replaced by the number 8. After this, the mobile operator code of 3 characters is entered. Then enter the unique subscriber number assigned to him by the SIM card. It must consist of 7 digits.
There shouldn't be much time between typing numbers. We recommend writing down the entire combination in advance and simply transferring it to your phone. If you remember the desired number for a long time, the memorization of the number will be reset. This will cause you to make an incorrect call or not connect to the line at all.
How extensions work
How to call an internal number and what is the principle of its operation? A useful communication tool is widely used in companies where departments are “physically” isolated from each other, and calling the right employee from an office at the other end of the corridor is inconvenient. The subscriber dials the main city number of the company (often the only one), and after connecting - the internal number.
Before calling an extension number, you need to find out it. Therefore, if the system has been installed recently, or the company has many different partners and clients, it is recommended to record a brief instructional announcement in the voice greeting. At the stage of establishing interaction, it is worth indicating the extension number in all forms of communication.
Modern landline phones are equipped with pulse-tone switches for selecting modes. If the subscriber's PBX supports tone dialing, before calling an internal number, you need to set the telephone switch to the Tone position. If only pulse mode is provided, you need to call and press the “star” button. All subsequent key presses on the phone will be transmitted as tone signals. Switching will not be necessary if the subscriber is using a mobile phone.
Long distance communication
Unlike calling other cities from a landline, contacting mobile numbers is no different from dialing a number within your region. In the same way, you need to dial 8, wait for one long beep to appear, then enter the operator code and the personal number of the called subscriber.
Some landline phone models (with a keyboard and a screen) have a phone book feature. You can add the necessary numbers to the list so as not to enter long combinations of subscribers you call too often. It is enough to write down the correct order of numbers once and save it, after which it will be impossible to make a mistake when typing. Check the functionality of your device in the instructions or on the manufacturer’s website. Unfortunately, this does not apply to old rotary phones.
Calls from home to mobile: is there a catch and where is it?
So, let’s say you urgently need to call your beloved grandmother, who went on vacation to Kamchatka and strictly ordered you to call her at exactly four o’clock in the afternoon. But it’s already minutes to five, and your phone has just stopped showing signs of life! What to do? Call from your home phone - it's on the wall.
The main reason why landline phones are still popular is the low cost of calls within the same locality. Unfortunately, this doesn't work for calls from your home phone to your cell phone: they'll still cost about the same as long-distance calls, even if you're calling your own phone in the next room.
The main rule of dialing when calling from a landline to a cell phone is the “rule of eight.” It must be placed before any number: the standard Russian Federation code +7 on landline phones is simply impossible to dial. Entering this number on the hospital keypad means long-distance calls and to mobile phones.
After entering eight, be sure to wait for the beep. In case you continue to dial the number without it, the telephone switch may mistake the number for one big code that it does not know and will not work. After the beep, enter the number in the same way as on a mobile phone: first the operator code, then the digits of the subscriber’s personal number.
For example, you need to call 89001234567. In this case, the dialing algorithm will look like this:
8–*beep*–900–1234567
There are almost no old home phones with a dial left. However, you can also call them on a mobile phone - if you wish
So, we have sorted out calls within Russia. But what if grandma went on vacation not to Kamchatka, but, say, to Berlin? How to call from your home phone to a mobile phone in another country? A little more complicated, but not much.
For international calls, after eight and the dial tone, you will have to dial another code: ten. This is the international calling code. After you have dialed the number “10”, dial the subscriber’s entire number, that is, indicating the region code, cellular operator and the subscriber’s number itself.
Let's go back to our grandmother for examples. She bought a local SIM card in Berlin and her phone number looks like this: + 49 152 1234567. You need to call as follows:
8–*beep*–10–49 152 1234567
As you can see, nothing complicated.
Call abroad
Now let's look at international calls to mobile numbers. To set a combination, a single algorithm of actions is provided:
- First dial 8 and wait for the dial tone. This figure allows you to reach the long-distance communication level.
- After that, enter 10. This code means switching to an international line.
- Then you need to enter the country code in which the subscriber is located.
- After that, enter the city code.
- Finally, enter the unique subscriber number and wait for the call to complete.
How to set up conditional redirects?
If you want to forward calls only when you cannot answer, configure the following options:
- When home is busy.
To do this, dial *22* and the number to which you want to forward calls. Then press the grille. So, if the landline phone line is busy, all incoming calls will be redirected to the mobile phone. The function is disabled using command #22#. - When the home doesn't answer.
To do this, you need to dial *61* on your home phone, the mobile number for forwarding and a hash. And if the home phone does not answer after four rings, the incoming call will be transferred to the mobile phone. Forwarding is disabled using the #61# command.
Additional Information
There is no need to keep country and city codes in memory, since Internet users have access to complete directories. These lists will be useful to you both when calling a cell phone abroad and when dialing home numbers. You can follow the link provided and view the list of country codes.
Before calling mobile numbers or abroad from a landline, you should definitely check the tariff plan and payment procedure. Long international and mobile calls can lead to large bills for your home phone line.
Why do you need extensions in business and how to set them up?
Modern digital solutions are an opportunity to optimize the financial and time costs of communication in any organization. What does an extension number mean for a company? This:
- time optimization by almost instantly transferring subscribers to personal managers;
- the opportunity to refuse to install separate telephone lines for all sectors and offices of the company and get a convenient means of internal communication;
- improving the quality of customer service and the ability not to miss a single valuable call (if one number is busy, the subscriber is redirected to any of the free ones);
- reducing the cost of organizing customer service - with additional numbers, employees will be able to work remotely;
- strengthening customer loyalty of the company, improving its reputation and image, and so on.
To connect internal telephones, you need to seek the support of professional distributors of telecommunications solutions, whose services include the creation of a virtual PBX. Specialists will tell you how to dial an extension number for internal communication, set up voice instructions for clients and help you realize all the benefits of effective and progressive tools. This will provide the company with ease of operation and success in the market competition for the client.
ProfiKomment magazine welcomes you! We are pleased to offer you step-by-step instructions on how to dial an extension number from a mobile phone and landline.
But first, it’s worth spending a few words on what an extension number is and why it is needed. To do this, you just need to imagine a simple classical picture. For example, an office with many employees. Each employee is an individual specialist who can provide advice only in one area. For example,
- Katya knows how to sell a phone.
- Masha knows how to buy a phone.
- Ivan knows how to fix a phone.
Katya, Masha and Ivan work, as already mentioned, in the office. Company number 123-45-67. If you need to call Ivan to ask him “How to fix your phone,” Ivan has his own extension number where you can contact him specifically.
By the way, we recently published an article on how to find a person by mobile phone. We recommend that you check it out in case your phone is already under someone’s control.
If you don’t know the extension number, then you won’t be able to get to Ivan. To find out Ivan’s extension number, you need to go either to the company’s website or ask the administrator on the main phone for it. In any case, we hope that you understand what an extension number is. Now let's take a step-by-step look at how to dial an extension number on a mobile device.
Most often, the extension phone number is indicated in parentheses next to the main number in the contact section on the company website. Or, when you call the support service of a particular company, the answering machine prompts you to dial an extension number.
You can dial an extension number manually, while dialing the required service, or in automatic mode, which is available on modern smartphones and other mobile devices.
Long-distance communication format for mobile and landline numbers
Alexander M. once left the city of Yaroslavl for Moscow on business. And now I urgently needed to contact my mother, and since the elderly person was opposed to modern mobile phones, she only used a home stationary device. As a result, the son, who was already unaccustomed to such “gadgets,” was a little confused in this situation - he had to contact his neighbors (fortunately, they were more technically advanced). But when faced with a problem, Alexander nevertheless decided to find out what the process of dialing a phone is when connecting mobile and home subscribers.

Dial rules
Please note that not all home devices can communicate with long-distance calls. The dialing service to numbers starting with 8 can be automatically disabled at the request of the owner of the device. This often happens in rented apartments, in this way the owner protects himself from possible costs for home telephone services used by the tenants.
The familiar combination for calls within the country (+7) is replaced by (8). She is the one who says that communication goes beyond the scale of urban communication.
Example: the order of dialing numbers to communicate with a Beeline subscriber will look like this:
Brief instructions
If we call our own mobile phone number, there should be no problem, provided that we remember it.
In the event that we need to dial someone else’s number, we open the address book and look at the exact numerical combination.
Correct dialing is also necessary because the pauses we make, during which we, for example, check the accuracy of what was dialed, can be regarded as long-distance codes.
In other words, there is a high probability that we may simply make the wrong number when calling to another city.
Manually entering an extension number from a mobile phone
- Dial the required number.
- Wait for the answering machine to respond.
- If the answering machine asks you to switch to tone mode, then ignore it. Mobile devices already work in this mode. Therefore, just skip this step without reacting to it in any way.
- Listen to which extension number you need to dial so that the system will redirect you to the right specialist or answering machine section.
- Enter the required number and wait for a response.
It may happen that a failure occurs and the administrator will respond to you. Don't rush to hang up. Just ask the person to transfer you to the right extension number to the right department to the right specialist.
Comparison with other operators
Rostelecom's intercity tariffs have favorable conditions, but you should find out the parameters of competitors' offers. The MTS operator has one that helps you save money when making calls throughout Russia. The price for communication depends on the connected tariff and the remoteness of the subscriber’s region. The subscription fee is 40 rubles/month, and a minute of conversation costs 3 rubles for all operators in Russia.
The Dom.ru provider also provides a choice of additional options for long-distance calls. “Favorite Region” allows you to call to a selected area at a discount with a subscription fee of 25 rubles per month. In order not to pay more when making calls to neighboring regions, the operator offers to activate the “60 minutes within Russia” option, the name of which speaks for itself. The monthly fee is 100 rubles/month.
The operator offers favorable Rostelecom tariffs not only for profitable long-distance calls, but also international calls from a landline. You can connect any TP or additional option on the provider’s official website, as well as call or visit the office. A large number of packages allows you to choose the most optimal option for any subscriber.
