Setting up the D-link DIR-615 has not yet been described in as much detail as this time. In this publication we will look at how to configure a fairly common router from D-link DIR-615. In the article I will refer, as an example, to the D-link DIR-615/A. But even if you have a router of a different brand, it doesn’t matter, since in many ways the settings are identical for everyone. Therefore, this manual is applicable to most D-link models. I will try to present everything in detail and in accessible language.

I won’t describe the features of the router itself for a long time; if necessary, you can read about DIR-615/A if you follow the link located a little higher. I will only note that this model copes well with its functions at home, or in not too large offices. With its help, uninterrupted Internet is provided to computers, tablets, and phones via a wireless connection.

In terms of setting up the D-link DIR-615, it is quite easy to do. Provided that your Internet provider uses the Dynamic IP connection method, then you just need to connect and turn on the router, and you will have access to the Internet. You just need to put a secret code on Wi-Fi and change the name, if necessary. The only thing that doesn’t suit me is that in almost all editions the settings of the D-link parameters, that is, the control panel, are changed (visually). Therefore, your router settings may look different from what is shown in this post. Although this is fixable, you just need to reflash it.

Authorization

In order to get to the router’s web interface, you need to open your Internet browser and type 192. 168.0.1 in the address bar, Username - admin , Password - admin (provided that the router has factory settings and its IP is not changed).

Configuring VLAN groups

You can configure subnets that will use different LAN ports. For this:

  1. In the Dlink menu, select “Advanced” , and then “VLAN”.
  2. Next, click on lan .
  3. Select the ports that you want to put in a separate group and uncheck them.
  4. Now we create a new VLAN using the ADD button.
  5. Fill in the values.
  6. We apply the setting and now the network is divided into two, due to the ports.

Changing the factory password

For security reasons, it is recommended to change the factory password.

Default: Login admin , password admin .

In the router interface, you need to go to the System Administrator password menu .

In the New Password , enter a new password.

In the Confirm Password , repeat the new password.

Then click the Save Settings .

After this, the router will prompt you to re-enter its settings.

Remote access

An excellent opportunity for system administrators to manage and change settings in the router.

  1. To do this, in the “Advanced” select “Remote access” .
  2. Next, click “Add” .
  3. In the first field, select the IP protocol that will be used by the remote computer.
  4. If you enable “Open access from any external host” , then you can access the router from any computer on the Internet. If you remove the value, you need to enter the IPv4 address or IPv6 address, as well as the network mask of the connected machine from which external control will be carried out.
  5. Also indicate the port for the router through which the connection will be made, as well as the protocol. The standard is HTTP.
  6. Click “SAVE” .

Setting up an Internet connection

Installing the router in place

We choose a place that would be approximately in the middle of our house or apartment. This is so that the signal is approximately the same in different rooms. There should be an outlet nearby and the internet cable should reach there.

We attach it to the wall, insert the power supply, turn it on using the power button, connect the laptop or computer to it via the LAN port. Here there is another point that is important in further configuration. If the Internet immediately appeared on your computer, you can immediately determine what IP address your provider has.

If the Internet appeared immediately, then you have a dynamic IP address. Through the WLAN wire, the provider immediately redirects incoming traffic to you.

Questions about how to connect or how to install the 615 router for Rostelecom should not arise, because each connector corresponds to its own wire.

To make a static IP, you need to forward D-Link 615 ports. Let's move directly to the D Link settings. We will write about how to open ports on a D-Link router in a separate article.

Configuring PPtP (VPN) while automatically obtaining a local IP address (DHCP)

  1. In the Connection Type field: select PPTP + Dynamic IP
  2. In the Name , enter the name of the connection (you don’t have to change it)
  3. Username: Your login from the contract
  4. Password: Your password from the agreement
  5. Confirm password: repeat password
  6. Connect automatically: check the box
  7. MTU value to 1450 or less
  8. Authentication algorithm: Auto
  9. Keep alive - check the box for permanent connection
  10. We save the settings with the Save the Reboot button, we reboot the router.

DC++

There remains the last and optional stage of setting up the DIR-615 router for the MTS provider, which is necessary for the correct functioning of DC++.

  1. Go to “NETWORK SETTINGS” and in the “Add DHCP Reservation” subsection enter the name of the desired PC in the “Computer name” form and the IP assigned to it.

  1. In the main menu, go to the “VIRTUAL SERVER” section and activate the “ADVANCED” tab.
  2. In the first line, check the box and enter the name of the network and IP of the computer that you reserved earlier.
  3. In the “Private” and “Public” fields, enter the port number – 4000, specify “Protocol” as “Both” and save the changes.

For the second and third devices, the port number increases by one - 4001, etc.

Setting up Wi-Fi on the router

1. From the advanced settings page, go to the Wi-Fi , select Basic settings ; and set the desired name of the wireless access point SSID . After that, click Edit ;.

2. After this, it is also recommended to set a password for your wireless network. To do this, go to the Wi-Fi security settings, select the authorization type (WPA2/PSK recommended), and then enter any password of at least 8 characters - this will help protect your wireless network from unauthorized access. Save your changes.

That's all: now you can try to use the Internet via a wireless Wi-Fi connection from a laptop, tablet or any other equipment.

Characteristics and appearance of the router

There is almost nothing to say about the characteristics of the D-Link 615, because in all such devices they are extremely similar to each other. 802.11n technology is used, built-in antennas, 4 network ports, operating frequency of about 2.4 Gigahertz. Data transfer speeds via cable are up to 100 megabits per second, via a wireless network up to 300 megabits per second.

Next about the appearance. Externally, the device looks very decent, the body is very decent when compared with cheaper models from the same company.

On the front panel there are several, or to be more precise, 8 light bulbs that act as indicators:

  • The first indicator is “Power”, this light is responsible for powering the device and connecting to electricity.
  • The indicator is labeled “WPS” and shows the status of this function.
  • Internet light bulb. It's not hard to guess what she's responsible for. This is the state of being connected to the World Wide Web.
  • The remaining indicators are responsible for the ports. The first one is “WLAN”. This is wifi mode.
  • Another 4 connection ports via “LAN” cables.

There is only one “WPS” button on the side panel, which can perform a quick connection.

On the back panel there are two special places for attaching our device to the wall. And below are the various ports and buttons:

  • First there are 4 local ports where you can insert a network cable to connect your home computer directly.
  • One port for Internet connection.
  • The button is located inside the “Reset” hole. To press it, you need to use some thin object, such as a paper clip. Press this button for 7-10 seconds. Afterwards the device will be restored to factory settings.
  • Router power connector. Here you need to insert the power cord, the other side should be in the outlet.
  • Router power on/off key. Using this button you can reboot the router.

After we know exactly the location of all the connectors and indicators we need, we can proceed to installing the D-Link DIR-615 router; we’ll configure it a little later.

Saving/restoring router settings

After making the settings, it is recommended to save them so that if problems arise, you can restore them. To do this, go to the System Configuration menu .

  1. Select saving the current configuration. To save the current settings of the router, the settings file will be saved to the specified location on the hard drive.
  2. To restore settings from a file, you need to click and select Load a previously saved configuration into the device , specify the path to the settings file, then click the button.

IPTV

To watch IPTV you need to make a few more clicks.

  1. Activate the “ADVANCED” tab and go to the last item of the main menu – “ADVANCED NETWORK”.
  2. We enable the “Enable Multicast Streams” option, save the adjustments and reboot the router.

I suggest looking at the instructions for a different firmware version:

Setting up the D-LINK DIR-615 router takes no more than a couple of minutes, and even a novice user can handle it.
