To find an iPhone if it’s lost and to protect the information stored on it, Apple has developed an entire search and protection system for this.

In this material we will look in detail at how to find an iPhone from another iPhone, computer or smartphone if it goes missing, whether it is turned off or not. The main thing is to remain calm and follow the instructions described in the article.

The previous material was devoted to the built-in function in Apple smartphones - the iPhone locator. Today we will continue to examine this topic, and you will learn all the ways to find a lost iPhone, if you lost it or in other cases. We will do this from a computer or from another iPhone.

  • 1 Find an iPhone via iPhone or computer - all steps
  • 2 How to find an iPhone if it is turned off
  • 3 Find an iPhone by IMEI - how?
  • 4 How to find an iPhone by phone number
  • 5 Search using SIRI
  • 6 They called you and said that they found your iPhone or received an SMS 6.1 In conclusion

Is it possible to find a lost or stolen iPhone?

The hardest thing to track is an iPhone with a dead battery. The latest generation operating system has a built-in function for tracking the device. Before turning off, the iPhone sends an SMS indicating its location. But you can use the function only after it is activated. This way, you can easily track a lost iPhone that is running iOS 8 with the battery disconnected.

Useful tips

No one is safe from losing their phone. A person who is faced with a loss is advised to take into account several tips:

  • remember where you last saw the device;
  • check your home and call places where the phone might have been left behind;
  • take advantage of the built-in search functions available on both Android and iOS;
  • in case of theft, try to contact the police;
  • do not try to use online services that offer to quickly find a smartphone.

If you follow all the recommendations, the likelihood of finding a mobile device will become much higher. But even if you can’t find your phone, it’s worth remembering that it’s just a gadget. Sooner or later it would still have to be changed.

Also, to understand how to track the location of an Android phone via Google, you must have a registered account.

Report your device as missing

Even if you lose your device, keep your information safe. Use the Mark Lost feature to remotely lock your device with a passcode, display a message on the lock screen with your phone number, and track your device's location.

The Mark Lost option is available on iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Apple Watch, and Mac.

Using the Mark as Missing option

  1. Open Find My and go to the Devices tab.
  2. Select your lost device.
  3. Scroll to Mark as Lost and select Activate.
  4. Click Next, then enter your phone number to display it on your lost device's display.
  5. Click Next. If you wish, you can leave a message for the person who finds your device asking them to contact you.
  6. Click "Activate".

How to protect yourself from losing your phone?

  • Don't carry your phone in shallow pockets. It is better to carry it in pockets that zip up.
  • Check your phone's location before changing your location. Train yourself to put it in the same place in your bag, and not in a random section or pocket.
  • Store all important information, contacts and favorite photos in the cloud (for example, iCloud, Google Drive, OneDrive, Yandex.Disk, Mail.ru Cloud and the like). This way you will have access to them in any case. Synchronize regularly.
  • To avoid theft, do not show your phone, especially an expensive one, to others unless necessary. Do not leave your phone in a visible place unattended: on a table in a cafe, in a gym locker room, in an open car, or even in your workplace (especially if others can get into it). Teach your child not to leave his phone unattended on his desk at school or university.
  • Set up a screen lock. Do not use the same PIN/password for different applications and services. Don't store passwords in your phone case.
  • Many smartphones allow you to indicate contact information on the screen when the lock is turned on in case of loss. Place your e-mail or phone number of a loved one there.
  • It is not recommended to purchase expensive mobile phones for minor children.
  • Keep the documents on your phone or the box containing the device identification number for as long as possible.
  • Just in case, save a screenshot of the identification numbers in the cloud. IMEI will come in handy if you have to contact the police. Information can also be found on your phone in the Settings section. Or, dial the code *#06# and make a call (works from any phone) .
  • If you decide to go into the forest to pick mushrooms, go hiking, or go to a place where there is not a connection everywhere (let alone the Internet), try to put your phone down so that it does not fall out. Otherwise, no tricks will help.
  • Install the application for the most accurate geolocation (we'll talk about them below).

Finding the location of your iPhone using specialized software

With the help of special applications for monitoring mobile phones, which are often called “spy”, you can get remote access to a much wider range of iPhone functions. This significantly increases the chances of returning an expensive phone to the owner, as well as preserving important information in the event of the final loss of the device. Therefore, spyware is sometimes installed on your own device to provide effective remote access and the ability to automatically record telephone conversations with other subscribers.

There is a second option for using programs for remote access to an iPhone: searching for a phone, recording conversations and SMS of another subscriber. Strictly speaking, we are talking about wiretapping - the main way to use such applications. Depending on the user’s goals, spyware can be installed on the phone of a child (parental control) or an employee of a company that you own, etc.

Is it worth searching through satellite and third-party online services?

How to find using a satellite receiver? The answer is simple: no way. In principle, such a function is not provided, since the iPhone is in no way connected with it.

Yes, theoretically, the telecom operator can determine the position of the device. But this can only work in two cases:

  • you have connected the corresponding service from the operator to your SIM and can monitor the position of the device in your personal account or via USSD (depending on the implementation);
  • you contacted the police/police, and they submitted an official request to the operator indicating the IMEI.

Services that offer to find an iPhone by device code only check online whether the specified IMEI is on the list of stolen ones. And these lists are replenished by the same users of the service. Often they do not work at all, producing various errors.

There are also sites that offer to find an iPhone (and indeed any device) by phone number - supposedly right now and online, although not for free. They can't actually get geolocation, so they are programmed to imitate the search process. For example, only the operator and the region to which the number belongs are determined, and not the actual location.

Don't pay scammers. The only truly working option is through Apple's service.

There are often situations in life when you need to find your device. And this is not necessarily theft, you can forget it somewhere, leave it, lose it, and so on. Be that as it may, all the known methods of finding an iPhone immediately come to mind.

I already wrote an article on the blog about how to find an iPhone if it was stolen and the search function is not turned on. In one year, the article received more than eight thousand views, this fact suggests that the topic is relevant, in demand and needs to be fully disclosed.

I decided to find out if there were other, reliable ways to find an iPhone, and began looking for information on how to find an iPhone by imei.

Programs for finding an iPhone mobile phone: installation features

Setting up the standard Find iPhone application does not require any special actions with the phone or any specific skills. But with the installation of specialized third-party software, everything is somewhat different. You will need to bypass iOS software restrictions, which requires jailbreaking. This is the name given to the process of flashing or “hacking” an iPhone, which results in access to previously closed features.

What will jailbreak do?

  • installation of software for searching an iPhone using GPS, recording conversations, SMS, Internet messages, etc.;
  • use of other useful applications, the installation of which was previously not allowed by the iOS system;
  • improved screen lock window;
  • expanding the capabilities of the phone control center;
  • refusal of automatic system updates, which often annoy users.

How to track an iPhone using the Find my iPhone app?

Some people do not see the Find iPhone application and spend a long time searching for where it is located. The fact is that it was recently renamed “Locator”. This is what confuses many users.

  • Open the Settings app.
  • Click your name at the top of the page to open your Apple ID page.
  • Click on the tab labeled "Locator".
  • On the next page, enable the “Share Location” toggle so it turns green.
  • Open Find My iPhone at the top of the screen. Start sharing your location (tap the switch so it turns green).
  • Tap the switches next to "Enable Offline Search" and "Last Location." Turn on all these features if you want to get more information about where your iPhone is.

You can now track your iPhone using the Find My iPhone app on another Apple device.

How to find an iPhone using the iCloud website?

If you don't have an iPhone or iPad at hand, you can easily find your iPhone from your computer. Here's what you need to do to do this:

  • In any web browser, go to https://www.icloud.com/#find. You may need to sign in with your Apple ID and password, but you won't have to enter the two-factor authentication code since it assumes you don't have the phone and therefore can't receive the code.
  • Click All Devices to see a list of all your devices.
  • Click on your lost device to see where it is.

At this point, you can zoom in or out on the map to get a better look at the location and find your lost iPhone. You can also erase the contents of your phone. This should only be done if the iPhone is stolen or is believed to be lost forever.

So, ICloud also helps you find your iPhone. Let's move on to the third way to quickly find out where the iPhone is.

How to track someone else's iPhone with Family Sharing?

Using the Family Sharing feature, you can track the phones of up to five people. To do this, you will need to get their permission. This feature can come in handy when you need to quickly find out where another person is. Setting it up is pretty easy:

  • Open the Settings app on your iPhone
  • Click on your name at the top of the screen
  • Click Set Up Family Sharing
  • Click "Invite Family Members." Then choose how you want to invite them to follow up: Invite via iMessage or Invite in person. In the second case, your family member will be prompted to enter their Apple ID and password directly on your iPhone
  • After accepting the invitation, your family member will also need to turn on Location (they will be prompted to do so).

Once you turn on Family Sharing, you'll be able to track the phones of anyone you add to your family group.

Basic methods

Finding a phone is not easy, but it is possible. In order for the search not to be in vain, at least two conditions must be met:

  1. On state of the device;
  2. Active Google account.

In this case, the device must have access to the network. If the gadget has been reflashed, there is no connection on it - you won’t be able to find your lost phone.

Google account

Any device running the Android operating system is linked to the owner’s personal account. This procedure is carried out the first time you start the gadget, when the initial settings screen appears. Binding is needed to synchronize the device, create a backup copy, and for remote access and management.

Through a Google account, a user from a regular computer or laptop can find a smartphone. But this will require Internet access on another device:

  1. Go to the official page in your browser to search for the device.
  2. In the upper right corner, select the account to which the device is linked or log in with your username and password.
  3. Refresh the page. All devices that are associated with this profile will appear in the field.
  4. Click on the image and name of the lost device.

A map will appear in a new window with the approximate location of the device. In addition, the interface will offer three alternative functions: a 5-minute call to search for a device, blocking the gadget, and deleting data from the phone.

If the device is not linked to an account, then you will not be able to find it using this method. It is worth noting that the method works in the presence of two additional conditions, which will be discussed below.

Standard Android functionality

To find a lost Android device, you will have to enable two functions: “location” and “find device”. They are tied to the geolocation of the device and are responsible for finding the gadget if it is lost. If these options are inactive, the smartphone will not be able to take direction.

Enabling features:

  1. Go to the “settings” of your device. Open the "security" tab. In some versions of Android, it is located under Location Protection or Google.
  2. Enable the "Find device" option.
  3. Return to the settings menu, select "Location". Activate this option.

If the GPS chip is faulty or it simply isn’t in the phone, then you won’t be able to find the device.

Branded utilities

Phone manufacturers are trying to expand the functionality of their devices by creating proprietary software. For example, Xiaomi or Huawei gadgets work under their own MIUI and EMUI shell; they have their own programs for finding a smartphone. Let's look at several additional utilities that are available from different manufacturers.

  1. Xiaomi. The MIUI shell has a function called “Find Phone”. It operates on the basis of the Mi Cloud cloud service. To activate it, you need to register with your Mi account and enable the option: “Settings” -> “Mi Account” -> “Mi Cloud”. At the bottom of the menu, activate the “Find Device” function. After enabling this function, you can find your smartphone through your personal account in your Mi account.
  2. Huawei. This brand faced the problem of localizing Google services on its own devices in 2019-2020. Therefore, standard solutions from Google may not work in some versions of EMUI firmware. Huawei’s own solution is implemented through the company’s cloud service. The tracking function is located in the “Phone Finder” section of the site. The option is activated through standard Android functionality.
  3. Meizu. This company has developed its own application “Phone Finder”. Unfortunately, this application was removed from Google Play in 2021, so it can only be found on third-party resources. After registering in this utility, the lost mobile phone can be found using another device by entering your login and password. Another search method is to log into your account from the web version of the program.
  4. Samsung uses built-in Android functionality for location tracking features. But you can track a lost cell phone not only through Google, but also through a special Samsung service. In this case, the device must be logged into a Samsung account.

These methods only work if a personal account from the manufacturer is enabled on your smartphone. Be sure to enable geolocation and an Internet connection on the lost device.

Third party programs

The standard set of programs and functions on the device is sometimes not enough. Applications from third-party developers will help expand the functionality. Let's look at a few of the most popular:

  • Bitdefender Mobile Security & Antivirus. A complete application to protect your smartphone from theft, loss or the influence of virus software. The utility has an “Anti-Theft” function, which allows you to control the gadget remotely. It is highly rated among users and is distributed free of charge.

  • Lookout. A free antivirus application with a built-in module for tracking stolen phones. It is implemented in the form of the “Phone Search” functions. This option has three useful features: the search itself, remote start of the siren, and fixation of the last point on the map when the battery charge is low. Lookout takes photos of the thief in the background as he tries to unlock the device. Reports are sent by email.

When installing all applications, you must grant permission to work with geolocation and other software sections of the device. Some application features may not be available on the latest versions of Android.

By IMEI

Have - also known as the identification number of a smartphone or telephone. Most often it consists of 15 digits, sometimes 17, absolutely any mobile phone has it, and even tablets with a SIM card. This number is needed to identify the gadget on the network. The number is displayed in the mobile operator’s database as soon as the user activates the SIM card. The cell phone sends the IMEI value every time it contacts the base station, even when it is turned off. The exchange of phone information with the tower does not occur if the battery is removed from the device.

Read more about this method in the article Track by IMEI.

Contact the police

If your mobile phone is lost or stolen, you should file a police report. To make the search process go faster, you need to:

  1. Carry with you photocopies of documents for the lost smartphone: receipt, warranty card, service agreement with the mobile operator. You can show the originals and keep them for yourself. This way the documents will definitely not be lost.
  2. When writing a statement, formulate the request: “about loss or possible theft,” even if you realize that the phone is lost. The case will be considered under a criminal article. It won't go on the table.
  3. Remember all the details of the situation when you last saw the phone. It is advisable to remember several people who were close to you.
  4. Estimate the damage at the maximum, not the estimated market price. It is best to take the purchase price of the device at the time of sale.
  5. Don't forget to take a receipt indicating that the police accepted the application for consideration.

When talking with the investigator, describe the scene as if the phone was stolen. For example: “The last time I saw a smartphone was in my briefcase; after a trip to the subway, the cell phone disappeared. Perhaps it was stolen while I was holding the handrails.” But don't imagine too much. Describe only those places where you have actually been.

You should contact the police if the device cannot be found on your own: it does not answer calls or is turned off (discharged), standard programs and applications do not help, geolocation (via satellite) does not show the location, a search from an alternative phone did not produce results.

Finding a phone using an operator

Using IMEI, you can track the approximate location (sector) of the smartphone from where the signal was received. This information is stored for a limited amount of time in the operator’s company logs. In theory, you need to make a request to each operator in your home region. As soon as the cell phone is turned on, it will transmit a signal to the base station. This will reduce the search radius. However, only law enforcement officers can do this.

In practice, finding a phone through Imay is quite problematic if we are talking about a real theft. The police can find a smartphone using its identification number. However, most often, it is not the criminal himself who is found, but the person to whom the stolen goods were resold. Plus the whole process takes quite a lot of time.

If the user found the device himself, for example, at home or at work, but has already reported it missing to the police, there is no need to worry. It is necessary to submit a new application to terminate the criminal case in connection with the location of the property. If the first statement specifically indicated “loss or possible theft,” then the applicant will not fall under Part 1 of Art. 306 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (committing a knowingly false denunciation of a crime committed). He will not have to pay a fine or face any other type of liability.

Using another smartphone

This method should be used immediately after your smartphone goes missing. It will require: a second phone (of a friend, colleague, relative, acquaintance), access to your Google personal account (login and password). On the second device you need to install the “FindMyDevice” application, which is linked to the user account.

After installing the program, set additional parameters:

  1. Go to “Settings”, then to “Security”.
  2. Go to "Devices and Credentials". Go to "Device Administrators".
  3. Here you need to select the “Find Device” program as the main administrator of the device.
  4. Log in to the installed application using your own username and password.

Further, the interface is similar to a similar web solution from Google. The user can see the gadget on the mini-map, call it, block it or delete all data.

Find iPhone by IMEI or phone number

IMEI

is a unique phone code. it is assigned to the device by the manufacturer. It is almost impossible to change this code yourself. To find it out, just type the key combination
*#06#
.

There are special services online for searching for an iPhone via IMEI. The principle of their operation is similar to that described earlier. The user specifies a unique iPhone code and activates a search using geolocation data. In practice, finding an iPhone this way is almost impossible because:

  • It is extremely rare, but attackers still manage to change IMEI.
  • To search for an iPhone, you need access to special equipment and operator databases. Only law enforcement agencies have such information.

The only way to find an iPhone using a code is to place an ad on the LoSToleN service

. This is the IMEI database of stolen devices. Their owners publish information about the lost phone and indicate the reward amount. Participants in the secondary market often check devices for the presence of information in the database.

What information is included in the IMEI code?

Each smartphone has a unique IMEI number, which is used to register it on the cellular network. It is assigned by the device manufacturer. It is possible to change IMEI, but this is a rather complicated operation and in some countries, for example, in the Republic of Belarus, it is criminally punishable. Before 2004, IMEI consisted of 14 digits, but now it has 15 digits. The IMEI contains information about the place and date of assembly, serial number, model of the mobile device, and at the end there is a check digit calculated using the Luhn algorithm.

How to activate Find My iPhone

Apple employees strongly recommend that you take care of the safety of your device in advance by activating the protection function when setting up your smartphone for the first time. Therefore, it is important for users to know how to enable the Find My iPhone feature.

  1. On the main screen of your device, find the gear-shaped icon - this is the Settings application. Click on the icon.
  2. The phone settings menu will open. Scroll down to "iCloud" and open this link.
  3. If the owner is not authorized in the application, the smartphone will prompt you to log in to your account. In the form that opens, enter the username and password of your iCloud account.
  4. In the list, find the “Find iPhone” item.
  5. To activate and operate the protection mechanism, it is important that the slider next to the name is turned on. If the icon is moved to the right and lights up green, the function is enabled.

Always be ready

As you can see, despite modern technology, it is sometimes difficult to detect a phone, especially if someone has tried everything to prevent it from being found. Therefore, it is better to prepare in advance for such turns of fate.

Make sure you have a secure lock

Phone authentication using a fingerprint or password is reliable protection. It is no coincidence that Google Pay refuses to work if you have not installed such a lock on your phone.

But at the same time, you shouldn’t count on Face ID, since technologies are not so developed yet, and they can easily be deceived by providing your photo for scanning. However, it is worth noting that the developers of the latest Google Pixel and Apple models claim that their artificial intelligence can easily recognize this trick.

Of course, we understand all the inconveniences you will face every time you want to look at notifications on your phone. But the thought of your photos, bank card information and other personal data falling into the wrong hands should frighten and upset you much more. The potential consequences are much greater than the effort you put into unlocking the screen.

Enable the function on your phone that determines your geolocation

Many people are annoyed that their phone knows too much about them. Therefore, they try to minimize the personal information available to the gadget. And that's why they disable Find My Device services.

But this will complicate the search for your phone if something happens to it! Therefore, it is better to make sure in advance that such a service tracks the position of your phone.

For Google services , go to your phone settings and find a similar option:

  • Google Services - Find My Device
  • Security - Find Device
  • Protection and Location - Security

Then activate the free one. It will help you remotely lock your phone or delete personal data if your gadget gets lost.

If you are the owner of a Samsung , then it makes sense to activate “Search for device”. This option is stored in the “Biometrics and Security” section, and consists of 3 parts: “Remote unlocking”, “Last location”, “Offline search”. If you want reliable protection, activate all 3 points.

If your phone runs on Windows for mobile devices (not suitable for Android), you can set up the “Search for device” option from your Microsoft account, not only from the smartphone itself, but also from any other device.

For an iPhone, you'll need to go to Settings, select your name, then open Find My and move the slider to the active position next to Find [device name].

If none of these options work for you, try searching the app store for a similar service.

What is Activation Lock

As soon as the smartphone is discovered missing, the owner is recommended to activate the “lost mode”. After this, many users of Apple products become confused: they do not know how to find an iPhone through the “Find iPhone” function. Activation lock will prevent unauthorized persons from using the phone, since it will require a lock password to renew it. The person who finds it will be able to see a message in which they should indicate a phone number to contact the rightful owner. The problem is that for the function to work correctly you will need an Internet connection. As soon as the smartphone catches the network, messages with the phone and other features of the Find iPhone function are activated automatically.

Find your phone offline

As you probably already understood, all services are ready to show the location of your phone only if your phone is turned on and geotagging is activated on it. But what if the phone is offline?

Samsung phones there is an “Offline search” option, where other Galaxy devices will participate in detecting your phone (it’s a pity this is only available for those devices with Android version 8 and higher). They will try to contact your phone via Bluetooth and forward location data to the server.

iPhones My Network feature. If it is active, then you will be able to find your device even if it cannot connect to the Internet.

Wiretapping and searching for iPhone using GPS: capabilities of special programs

Determining the location of a specific phone using GPS coordinates is only a small part of the functionality of spyware. We invite you to consider the full range of capabilities of specialized wiretapping programs for iPhone.

A spy app from serious developers may include the following features:

  • recording incoming and outgoing connections, listening to conversations in real time. You can also always listen to the recorded conversation in your personal account on the program website;
  • access to the list of contacts on the phone, the ability to blacklist numbers;
  • recording and reading SMS messages, as well as email messages;
  • interception of online correspondence in popular instant messengers (iMessage, WhatsApp, Viber, etc.);
  • control of Internet activity (logs, bookmarks in the browser);
  • access to multimedia files (photos, audio, video);
  • find iPhone location using GPS;
  • hidden control of program settings using SMS messages or through your personal account on the Internet.

Thus, by installing a special application on the desired phone, you can not only easily find the subscriber’s location, but also get the widest access to his information.

Losing your favorite gadget is a nuisance from which no one is immune.

The loss of a favorite gadget makes us sad

And indeed, this device not only serves to make calls, but also contains a large amount of confidential information, including a phone book with the numbers of our friends and closest people, a notebook with a lot of personal information, our favorite applications and games, reminders and social network accounts with automatic entry.

No one is insured against the loss or theft of a mobile device.

So, what should you do if your mobile device is lost (or stolen), and even if the situation is aggravated by the fact that the gadget is turned off due to, say, a dead battery?

First of all, you should not panic, but try, following the recommendations below, to find your irreplaceable loss.

Instructions for searching iPhone via Android

If your gadget is lost or stolen, you can track it remotely and block access to personal data. Apple provides alternative options to find an iPhone through an Android phone if you do not have an iOS device.

Find My search function

The Find My iPhone app has several useful features, but the main one is Find My. The service establishes a remote connection with the gadget and provides access to all capabilities: determining location, blocking the device, sounding a sound signal. Basic search methods will become available if the user activated Find My iPhone before losing the device. Let's look at the steps that will help you find an iPhone from an Android or computer.

A detailed description for finding an iPhone is presented in the article “How to find an iPhone.”

How to put the device into lost mode

  • Follow this link;
  • enter your Apple ID details;
  • Click “All devices” and select the device that you want to put into lost mode;
  • Confirm that this mode is enabled.

How to enable sound notification

The sound signal for the search is turned on in the same order as when the gadget is put into lost mode. In the “All devices” directory, you need to find the lost one and click “Play sound”.

Third-party iPhone search programs on Android

In addition to the described method, third-party services will help you find the device. The unification of protocols for determining coordinates and data exchange allows different smartphone manufacturers to develop universal applications for searching for lost gadgets. Such programs are useful if you have both iOS and Android devices - for example, Samsung's remote search application.

In addition to registering an Android smartphone, the program allows you to add an iPhone to the list of monitored devices. For an Apple smartphone, you need to go through standard authorization, as when connecting to iCloud. Additional features will help you find your iPhone using Android:

  • Remote backup creation.
  • "Add Trustees" - registers other users and devices from which you can track your iPhone.
  • Maps to display the device.

Applications for searching for iPhone in Google Play Market

If you don’t want to register with third-party services, pay attention to programs similar to the Find iPhone application for Android. Apple has not released an official application for other systems, so you cannot download and find an iPhone on Android from Google Play. However, the store offers Find iPhone or Find My Phone programs. Web applications provide functions for displaying coordinates and turning on sound on the device. Google maps with voice guidance of the route help you find your iPhone through the Android application. Connecting an iPhone and using the tracking function is possible after authenticating with an Apple ID in iCloud. Both applications can be downloaded for free.

Quick Questions and Answers

Some users do not know where the device is located and what it is needed for. Another question is remote access to data, with a changed account and reset settings.

Where to find it

Identification number look:

  1. On the box. Most often it is located on a sticker label with the product specification and the serial number of the device.
  2. On the warranty card, less often on the receipt.
  3. Under the battery or SIM slot - in old smartphones with a removable battery.
  4. On a removable SIM card tray.
  5. Some manufacturers indicate IMEI on the smartphone body. For example, on iPhone.
  6. By entering the USSD command: “*#06#” in the device dialer. (enter without quotes).
  7. On Android: go to Settings -> About Phone -> All Settings -> General Information. On iOS: Go to Settings -> General -> About This Device.

The first two points will be useful if the gadget is already lost. The rest should be used before it goes missing in order to record the number in a safe place.

Why is IMEI needed?

The number is used to identify the smartphone radio in the operator’s cellular network. The user needs IMEI to prove that he is the owner of the gadget. It is worth noting that devices with two or more SIM cards have a corresponding number of identification numbers. That is, for two SIM cards there are two different IMEIs.

Is it possible to find it via the Internet?

If we are talking about services from Google, Apple or branded applications (cloud services) from technology manufacturing companies - yes, really. Searching through unverified resources by entering IMEI is dangerous. Often such sites hide virus programs or common scammers. Data about the latest actions on a smartphone for a specific IMEI can only be provided by a mobile operator, and only at the request of law enforcement agencies.

Searches by IMEI via satellites - MYTH

Geolocation search (GPS) is not a myth. This is exactly how all standard services and most applications for finding a smartphone are designed. However, they will only work if the mobile phone is still linked to the user’s personal account, he has access to the Internet, and geolocation is enabled on the device. Without the subscriber's consent, tracking is not possible.

How to protect your data without access to your smartphone

You can lock the device remotely, through the Google search web resource or by installing the FindMyDevice application. These programs have a separate “block” option. Some third-party applications have similar functionality.

Is it possible to find Android devices with reset settings and a changed account?

Yes, there is such a possibility. Even if the attacker did a factory reset and logged in with a new account.

Search algorithm:

  1. Log in to your account on your PC or laptop. Click on the “Manage Google Account” button.
  2. In the new window, click on “Data and personalization” in the left menu.
  3. Click on "Location History".

The system will show entry points on all devices recently. Here you can see the movement of the lost smartphone. This method works if the user has previously activated the “Location History” function in his profile.

Option 2. The phone is lost and there is no access to it

It is a very annoying situation when access to the phone is lost and no measures were previously taken to possibly protect it from such a situation. Or maybe it’s not your phone, but you absolutely need to know its location? And in these cases, something can be done.

Contacting specialists

Detective agencies have existed at any time, and in the age of high technology their resources are almost limitless. While researching this problem, I turned to an Internet search and found something on this subject. The site rozshuk.com.ua, which will be discussed, is not an advertisement, but is given only as an example, its services are relevant for residents of Ukraine, but I am sure that there are similar organizations in Russia.

So, being specialists, representatives of this site claim that it is more than possible to find a person by phone number and are ready to confirm this upon receipt of the corresponding application through the form on their website.

Contacting law enforcement agencies

This method is a last resort in the event of your iPhone being stolen, we will not digress too much on this topic, since there is already a very useful article on this subject.

Child loses phones

Sending a child to school without a phone is exciting. But when a child constantly loses a device (leaves it on windowsills, desks, in the locker room or who knows where) it’s time to sound the alarm.

According to statistics, between the ages of 6 and 15, every fifth child loses their phone on average once every two months. Therefore, there is no reason to think that your “bungler” is unique. First of all, try to calmly understand why these constant losses occur. Maybe the child simply doesn’t understand the value of the phone and doesn’t consider it his thing? Maybe the student is too busy and distracted, or maybe he wants a more expensive model? Perhaps the high school students simply took the phone away, and the child is afraid to confess. Try to discuss the problem and find a solution. But in order to prevent the loss from happening again, prepare your child’s phone for searching.

You can search for your child’s smartphone through installed family tracker apps. Moreover, they combine “two in one” - they allow you to reduce your anxiety for the student (in case of danger, the child can send an “SOS” signal) and, if something happens, find the missing smartphone.

How to block an iPhone if it's stolen

If you can’t find your iPhone, it’s better to block it to prevent an attacker from gaining access to the user’s personal data. To do this, you need to enable Lost Mode in the My iPhone app.

Next, follow the instructions on the screen to create a password code. If you are trying to lock the iPhone of a family member who does not have a code installed, you need to log in to the Apple ID on behalf of the owner of the lost phone.

What can you do remotely with a stolen/lost smartphone?

If you have a search service connected, then in addition to viewing the status and current (or last recorded) position, you can:

  • play a signal on your iPhone - convenient if you are already there;
  • put the device into lost mode (also known as Lost mode) – suitable for blocking if you couldn’t find it quickly;
  • erase data - if hope of return is dead.

Important! To perform any of these actions (as well as to find out the position), a network connection is required. If the device has gone offline, the command will be executed only after communication is resumed.

Here's how to block an iPhone that's not yours via iCloud (remember that the site can be used on any computer):

  • open the service page and go to view the device;
  • press the Lost Mode activation button.

Additionally, the system will prompt you to enter text that will be displayed on the screen when turned on. For example, you can offer to call a number, write to an address, or indicate other methods of communication.

The method will only work if you have previously logged in to the device itself using the same account.

If you do not want to take risks and want to delete your data from the device, use the appropriate service option.

Important! After erasing, it will no longer be your device - it will no longer be possible to find it through the Apple service. Only the blocking function will remain active, since it can only be turned off by deleting the iPhone from the account.

Finally, there remains the sad option when the service has not been activated. In this case you can:

  • change the password for your Apple ID and for those services that you logged into on your iPhone (for example, social networks);
  • disable Apple Pay via the website https://appleid.apple.com in the appropriate section.

Finally, if your iPhone was stolen, and even turned off, then you can, of course, try to find it yourself, but you should not forget about this method, like contacting the police. You must write an application and indicate the IMEI of the device, as well as confirm that it is really yours. Additionally, you can contact your telecom operator and block the SIM.

Conclusion

Owners of a new iPhone are so excited about their purchase that they completely forget that the gadget can easily be lost or stolen. Take care of registering an Apple ID account, install additional search applications, write down all passwords, save packaging, receipts and, most importantly, the IMEI number immediately after purchasing the device.
